    That first sound is exactly like an old-style computer noise you'd hear on an old sci-fi film. They probably made it the same way.

    I love how any normal person that heard this would be like "what the hell is that, that's not good" but every synth nut is thrilled. To be fair, whether it sounds good or bad is just a stylistic choice.

      Till the white noise i could follow. After the pink noise it was like listening to a quant explaining material.. The sounds corresponding were even worse.
      But that's just some opinion.

  • @notjulesatall

    There's a better patch for that :
    Pink noise to S&H In
    Rev EG1 to S&H Clock
    S&H Out to VCA In
    VCA Out to Total
    EG1 to VCA Control (Already patched that way, but overriding it will get you some extra punch)
    Set the EG1's delay and attack to zero then fine tune its release to minimal noise at the end of the release and you'll be good. This patch will provide you with a larger variation than the original patch from the manual and plays better with external sequencers (Ableton via USB, etc.).
    Also if you want a continuous trigger just use the mod wheel, that way you won't use your white noise for nothing.

      And there is even a "better" noise source then pink and white. Patch external signal processor in -> external signal processor bandpass out. External signal processor out into sample and hold input. This will create a feedback noise that you can sculp with the bandpass controls of the esp. And no this wil not damage your Ms 20 the esp is protected for high volume stuff :)

    Actually your tutorial is very good. I need to pay attention more! I am thinking of using my new MS-20 MIni for Jazz music, that and my Saxophone (through a mic) and my Alesis 88 key electric piano/harpsichord/clavichord and guitar and bass.
    I hope I can get away with using my acoustic drum kit for the rhythms, but what you teach here my be a good thing to incorporate into the mix.
    I'm not a performer at all as I am so sensitive that I get nervous. Only when I am playing really well can I relax because I know it's sounding good. But many times I am not satisfied and that's when I get so nervous that I become distracted with fear and then it all goes bad. But left alone in my studio I can take my time and get it right. It's just so much work!
    Sometimes I think I get nervous when playing music because I am a painter that I am used to painting without an audience to distract me. Yes, I blame my musician/performance nerves on that! That and a lack of confidence.

      It's funny but I do not think I understood how a synthesizer is used. The MS-20 Mini has the 1/8" input jack and I thought I could plug in any electric guitar and also a mic to pick up all my stringed, and wind instruments. I can do that but the way it affects the tone is not how I envisioned it. It's almost like the synthesizer just wants to be used on its own merits and not as an device to modify the tone of other instruments. It will do that but not in the way I envisioned. I almost want to return it. I have 7 days until my 30 day return policy are up.

    Good work Man! Just one question: what sort of output it should be in a sequencer? I can see you took the tempo from Octatrack, but was the cable taken from regular output of OT? Thanks

    • @LateNightBeatsOfficial
      @LateNightBeatsOfficial  7 лет назад +1

      In this video I used a "sync" output from the Electribe E2 (or it can be the sync output from any VOLCA) to sync it to the Octatrack (Electribe E2 is receiving MIDI clock & transport from the OT). You can also check if a metronome track from the OT can do the same trick...

    I want to get used to apps as opposed to hardware for the cost issue and I am not sure that having tons of hardware could ultimately be the better way. If necessary one could have several ipads and it would still be much more cost effective as well as being able to own thousands(exaggeration) of synths and connect them easily and not need a warehouse. There are no limits that way. Of course if one has been working for years with hardware it would be tough to change.

    • @LateNightBeatsOfficial
      @LateNightBeatsOfficial  8 лет назад

      I have friends who make really impressive music with just their laptop and a controller, so it's really a matter of personal preference. I used to play drum and bass sets with just my iPhone and my iPad :) One thing going for all hardware is that in 10 years your iPads will be completely worthless and I could always sell my Moog with a minimal loss or--if I wait long enough--maybe a slight gain :)

  • @sinistar99
    @sinistar99 2 года назад

    Have you noticed when you have a filter self-oscilate a note pattern... the pitch of that pattern kinda changes with the notes from the vco you're sending through that filter and it weirdly goes with it. It's like a smart accompaniment sometimes. It's bizarre I'm not sure how it's doing it.

    • @LateNightBeatsOfficial
      @LateNightBeatsOfficial  2 года назад +1

      I think that key tracking is not perfect on the filter and it's accurate only across a limited pitch range :)

    • @sinistar99
      @sinistar99 2 года назад

      @@LateNightBeatsOfficial Oh yeah I don't use it to track the keys usually I just hook it to a short sequence or something and let it "do its thing" with filter oscillation.

    Have you tried the iPad app iMS-20? No need for big piece of gear. The app sounds great and much easier to use. It has virtual patch cabling. I think having a few ipads and a few good midi controllers can accommodate any musical need. Is there really any need for hardware synths? Have you tried the new app Moog Model 15? Incredible!!!

    • @LateNightBeatsOfficial
      @LateNightBeatsOfficial  8 лет назад +3

      I haven't tried the app, but I'll admit that I would fail an A/B test between the digital and the hardware version of MS20. The hardware / software preference really boils down to workflow; if you'd rather work with hardware you gotta pony up for the real thing.

    • @HarmonicaMustang
      @HarmonicaMustang 8 лет назад

      There may not be a use for hardware synths anymore, but the feeling you get when using one is extraordinary, especially with analogue equipment. The fact that you control electricity and create sound with just a few knob turns and with no underlying digital assistance is fantastic. But if you don't want a synth then good on you. Synthesisers are like microphones, plugins and cats: you don't stop at one.

      So, normally, my MS-20 Mini is connected to the OT via MIDI (channel 1), but for the purpose of this video it's not. The OT only provides clock via MIDI to the Korg Volca and Volca is sending SYNC out (mono jack cable) as a clock source to the MS-20.

    For me it's about making music, not investing thousands of dollars in synthesizers hoping that they will retain value if I sell them one day, which I won't. People talk about the feeling of turning real knobs and sliding real sliders etc. I can't afford that feeling. I prefer to use controllers and make any sound I want because I can just get an app that can do it. Try the Model 15 app and you might change your mind about hardware. They went all out to create a hardware feeling in an app. That app is revolutionary.

    • @HarmonicaMustang
      @HarmonicaMustang 8 лет назад +7

      I understand your point. I bought the Komplete 10 Ultimate package from Native Instruments and I liked the multitude of synths it came with. But, I couldn't get my creativity out; if I knew what I wanted to achieve then that wasn't a problem with Reaktor, but when it came to being creative and trying to create new sounds I was struggling. I had the tools necessary, but I just didn't like the fact that the synths were 'hiding' behind layers of digital formuli. So I bought an MS-20 Mini and suddenly I was able to create sounds I could never imagine of doing. The fact that the entire signal flow was right in front of me and I was able to locate the source of every detail meant that I was in full control over my sound. If you prefer software, good for you. For solid and sure results I prefer software, but for creativity I prefer a good 'ole analogue synthesiser.

    • @greenturmalin
      @greenturmalin 7 лет назад +3

      some people just like to use real instruments instead of sitting in front of a computer screen or touching a touchscreen like using there smartphone. and in the end, all your apps you bought will be worth nothing in some years, so I don't know what way is economocally better, buying hardware which of course costs more money but which at least retains parts of its value or buying software which is worth nothing in a couple of years? what are you doing here btw, if you don't care about hardware, there are plenty of software vids in the tube ;)

    • @savanaviolenta
      @savanaviolenta 7 лет назад +2

      I get creative from real hardware ,not software synths.Software synths turn me away from making music.

    • @perrypelican9476

      I have to respect whatever someone prefers, but if they have budgets and are simply not able to create the music that they want to because they can't afford to then it might be time to be flexible and try a new way. I can afford more than a lot of people maybe but I do not want to put a fortune into something if there is a much less expensive way, as long as the result is as good. If I find that I am being stifled by using one method over another then I may decide to go the other way, but I am starting to like the ability to get exactly what I want for $25 instead of much more. Again, each to his own, of course.

    • @greenturmalin
      @greenturmalin 7 лет назад +1

      as I said, buying software will make you loose more money than buying hardware. your software is worth nothing in a few years. invest some money now and you can sell the hardware if you, at any point, don't need or want it anymore. my setup is worth about 2k more than when I bought all of the stuff I own now couple of years ago.. so well, yeah I put a fortune into it but in the end it's really worth something, actually more than before. Besides of course, I don't really care about it, since I don't plan ever selling it, I just prefer hardware over software, no matter if the results are better or worse, I am hobbyist like 99% of people commenting on youtube tutorial/demos vids, so fun is the main point for me making music.

    • @PeterDad60
      @PeterDad60 6 лет назад +2

      I among all of us should know better than to say heartless things to anyone posting their own music on youtube. Look, I'm not feeling well lately and I am cranky. I wish I was the same nice guy I used to be, but because I never feel good, I do have those days when I am not so nice. I apologize, and I mean my apology to you. It was not nice and was uncalled for.
      Today I do not have it in my heart to write anything hurtful. Oh, and guess what?... ... ... I too have a lot of gear!
      I am an artist (painter) and musician at heart. I never intended to make money with my music but that has not prevented me from building two complete music studios over the years. Injuries have sometime forced me to sell great gear and sometimes limited the use of my hands. I also sold great gear to protecting my hearing! I had a glorious hot rodded Marshall JCM 900 MkII and a full stack of Marshall JCM 900 1960A and 1960B speaker cabs, I sold my Ampeg 300 watt tube amp and 4 Bass speaker cabs as well. I sold them to preserve my hearing. To this day I miss those rigs so bad!!! But I remember poor, poor Beethoven being led to the audience out from the music pit so he could see the people applauding his symphonies, as he went completely deaf (from natural reasons I think).
      I went to your channel because I have a new Korg MS-20 Mini and I do like it. But there are times I wonder if I could have invested the $450 toward a new amplifier. Because I have 14 amps and 15 electric guitars and 2 electric bases and 2 bass amps, a complete P.A.System, Mixers, pedals, and 28 International "World" stringed instruments like Sitar, Veena, Sarangi, Oud, Pipa, Erhu, Guqin, Bouziki as well as 5 violins, a viola, a cello and an upright bass, three digital recorders, two "loopers"....I think the MS-20 Mini will someday become familiar enough with me so that I can play most, if not all of these instruments through it and that I may one day make some good, fresh, creative music. Or maybe not!
      Please forgive me for being judgemental and also for behaving like such an ass.
      Peter Nelson
      P.S. 3 years ago while recovering from my latest Hospital 2 month stay due to a motorcycle crash I made 3 RUclips videos using acoustic guitars. Most people say I really suck! Thankfully, one nice person compared my Spanish Classical guitar playing to a great Egyption Oud player Farid Al Atrash (give him a listen). Then someone else was nice enough to compare me favorably to Andres Segovia.
      These two nice posts reached my heart and encourage me. Because I really love Andres Segovia and I learned from listening to him. Then I also play an Oud and Farid Al Atrash is my favorite Oud player, so yes I have been influenced by these two musicians. Unfortunately in today's world not many people even know who they are and these people often write stupid comments to me, just as I did to you.The many posts spread out over the 3 videos were mostly insults and painful to read. Even saying I don't know how to play guitar. I admit my hands were stiff from the injuries from the motorcycle wreck, but I actually think because I did not play their style of modern rock music they did not really know what they were listening to. Well That's my defense. I am very sensitive and I have been playing violin since age 3 and studied with Nina Chmelev who was a graduate of the Juilliard School of music in NYC. She said I did 2 years worth of work in my first year alone. I studied with her for only 3 1/2 years as my father died and my mother, did not want to pay for my lessons. To show you how naive I can be, I honestly expected Nina to continue teaching me. But she made a point that I no longer practiced. I tried to explain that my feelings were so locked in tight because my father died that I could not bring myself to even feel my violin playing so that is why I stopped practicing. It took me years to recover from his loss (not completely as when I see him in my sleep I actually know I am dreaming because I know he died, no matter I smile and enjoy his presence) so in the end I guess she made the right decision.
      Anyway I will be watching more of your video's and also I will not be so rude and also I will not write a book for my comments.

    You talk about the hardware synths retaining their values as opposed to ipad apps but an ipad app costs almost nothing compared to hundreds or thousands. You can buy a great midi controller or a few midi controllers and then you can turn your physical knobs and configure them any way you want. It will be many many years before those top apps become unplayable but who cares when the cost is $25 for the most expensive ones. At Th at time there will be something better and you hardware guys will be broke and unable to buy the new stuff. Ipads last many years. Ok if you have a ton of cash then go ahead and buy everything but I still like the idea of being able to download an amazing sounding synth for next to nothing instead of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

    • @angeliquelarsen7245
      @angeliquelarsen7245 7 лет назад +4

      The problem with this logic is that, like all software, you have to have support for it. For the time being software synths are great and a nice inexpensive way to get into synthesis, but in 10+ years there may not be hardware that supports the software you're running today. If you buy an MS-20 or a Moog Mother 32, in 20 years it will still work just as well as it does today (if maintained properly) regardless of things like operating systems.

    • @perrypelican9476
      @perrypelican9476 7 лет назад

      True but in 10 years you can be sure thingo will be very very different. I don't want to buy something today for a lot of money when there will be cooler things that will come along. And so what if the operating systems later can not run the $5 synth I bought yesterday. It worries me more that an expensive hardware synth will blow and need a crazy expensive repair that only so easy guy in Kalamazoo knows how to fix and needs to wait for months to get a part that is not made any more. I don't have a nostalgic thing with antique hardware. It's the new technology that gets me excited.

      The drawback to the soft synth/midi controller set up is you have to map the parameters you want to modulate to the controller....in advance. Your controller will have maybe 20 pots/faders on it . If you take the time to map some parameters from the soft synth and label them on the controller.... then you want to add another track and maybe you take another 5 parameters from a different soft synth and map them to 5 other pots. It's all a bit complicated to manage and before you know it you are back to the mouse to tweak something you didn't map to the controller..... and once you are forced to use the mouse it is kind of hard to play at the same time. Now if you have a way around that I am all ears...
