First of all, I really don't think there is anything wrong with a director not auditioning for a role. The director has a vision, it's his film, and if he sees an actor who is perfect to be the ML in his production, he should hire him. After all, even scripts are written for a specific actor/actress. There is nothing wrong with that.
Secondly, the Wonka in the Wonka film is young and idealistic, not a puffed-up middle-aged guy. As if anyone didn't know, personalities change as a result of life experiences. The fact that a movie telling the story of a young Wonka is colorful and friendly is a good thing.

I personally think that the character being a little bit less dark and more optimistic and lighthearted, kind of makes sense for a younger version of the character. The version of Wonka that you see in the original film is somebody that already had to go through years of the same kind of struggles that you see happening in this movie. I was telling a friend of mine that it actually makes a lot of sense in terms of character development that he would start off to be more this way, but then overtime become more guarded and prickly as you say. The film also leaves room I feel for more in between movies to show more times that he had to struggle against Slugworth. In the original lore, it states that in the height of his success that he had to continuously fight against Slugworth trying to steal his secrets. Another film or two could show this development to the point where he decides to shut down his factory, which is alluded to in the original film. I thought it was quite well done.

Wonaka will do well with audiences because its very safe, has a star-studded cast, and is family friendly for the holiday. Theaters and restaurants will also enjoy promoting it because of the food-tie-ins.

Just saw this movie and thought it was great! I realize it was a prequel, but comparing it to the other two popular Wonka/Charlie movies, I actually liked this one better. I'm 58 years old and it reminded me a little of the feeling I got as a child watching the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with Dick Van Dyke. Not quite so dark and just a nice, light-hearted fun watch with some catchy tunes and really fun characters. This is really what I needed to kick off my Christmas week to get my spirits up, and I would highly recommend to parents of young children. I can't imagine many children under the age of maybe 12 not thoroughly enjoying this movie!

I think it makes sense that Wonka in this movie doesn't have his dark edge. This is him at the beginning of his career when he's still optimistic. In the other movies Wonka has lost his innocence and gained a dark side and that is why he is looking to retire and leave the factory to someone more pure.

Saw it. Speaking very honestly. This wasnt a prequel. This was a reboot.
The moment Wonka mentioned his mom was when i knew.
Now i didnt like it at first. But the backstory for wonka is better.
Willie Wonka from the remake went into chocolate to spite his father who was a dentist.
This Willie Wonka however had a dream. Came from a poor family. No father. Just his mother. And she was a brilliant chocolate maker. And willie wanted to be a magician but combined his passion for magic with the love of chocolate he got from his mom and i think thats absolutely beautiful.
From a narrative standpoint this is brilliant.
We also got to finally meet after what? A four decades? The competition that stole wonkas ideas and put him out of business.
Songs could've been better. Not a single one stuck to me but there were a ton of money shots which i did enjoy.
Oompa Loompas.... Got a little messy. And thats all ill say in terms of their origin.
But i adore. And i mean ADORE the chocolate designs in this film. Not gonna lie i was craving chocolate the entire time especially that thunder cloud wonka made. Like the entire design with the candy and chocolate was gorgeous.

It is entirely possible that by everyone "being different" that everyone in actuality winds up the same.
Hollywood's need to "deconstruct" everything has made it where wholesome will now stand out as fresh and original.
I can give a similar example with B rated anime.
So many anime are about one guy and multiple love interests that any anime featuring one boy and one girl who are for one another stands out 😅

The first 10 minutes showed promise. Then the next hour sussing out the plot was a dumpster fire. I kept thinking, “with the writers literally having a *world* *of* *pure* *imagination* to work in, they chose such a week plot and characters?” Not to mention the audacity of calling this a Prequel and so heavily handling the “re-imagining” of the lore and making it impossible to match either of the two movies… I love the silliness and absurdity of the the existing properties, but this movie’s plot itself was just plain absurd in idiocy.

It is pretty easy...when speaking English, use English pronunciations, when speaking French or any other language, use that language's pronunciation. It is rude otherwise. When Spanish speakers say their name in Spanish to me, most of the time I have no idea how to spell it our even say it back. That is because languages use different sounds. As someone who also speaks Japanese, I know most native Japanese speakers can't hear the difference between R and L. When I lived in Japan and when speaking Japanese, I always said my name using Japanese pronunciations even thought it sounds NOTHING like my name in English. It is about being considerate.

Um, there has been 2 good movies but not Hollywood movies, Japanese movies:
Studio Ghibli's Hayaō Miyazaki's The Boy And The Heron (anime)
Toho's Godzilla Minus One or Gōjira Mainasu Wan (ゴジラ-1.0マイナスワン) and this latest Godzilla is a stunning masterpiece with a budget equal to $15 and leagues better looking than anything Marvel or Lucasfilm for 4 years. Its the same director/writer/VFX, he did that much of the movie. It is a human story, with great challenged characters you want to see persevere and Godzilla is scary in this movie mostly because of the characters. There is genuine tension, and all about 10 days before Hiroshima- June 1947. Post war japan rebuilding than Godzilla takes them from 0 to -1.
See both films. Leagues better than Wonka. Saw it Saturday then went and bought a ticket for Godzilla for a 3rd time since release. I have not seen a new movie in theater more than once since The Dark Knight in August 2008, a LONG time ago. Godzilla Minus One and The Boy And The Heron are the best films I've seen for over a decade.

I saw it last night and I really enjoyed it. I don't think it did anything ground breaking or spectacular - it was just a solid movie, that knew what it was about and accomplished it's purpose. Charming, light, with small touches of emotional moments. I also thought it did a decent job as a prequel to the Gene Wilder version. To me it makes sense that Chalamet's Wonka doesn't have that "edge". We see this boyish optimism that he starts out with and it's conceivable that some of that cynicism grows over time and contributes to him becoming a recluse later on.

nice. Oz The Great & Powerful was a good prequel too.

This would not be the first film where a director had a certain actor in mind for the lead role. There have been times when a writer writes a movie specifically for a particular actor.

I agree, I’m glad they didn’t make it dark like the original. Wonka was kind of sadistic.

I loved this movie. This to me was a tell on government which was a big call back to the real story behind the gene wilder 1970’s version. Unlike the Johnny Depp version which was just a creepy version of Willie wonka.

Thats refreshing thanks for letting us know. I think the budgets should still be smaller as this movie will need to break 300-400 million to be profitable.

I didn't see the movie, but some darker tones could work if done right. However I think the wholesome aspect is actually more in line with the gene wilder story. If you watched that classic, the whole purpose of the golden ticket was to find someone with a good heart who loves the chocolate to take over because he was losing faith in people. It was a desperate last ditch effort to find someone as passionate as he was. I think he became a little deranged in his older years close to his retirement.

Timothy Chalamet wasn't miscast. How can people miss the physical resemblance to Gene Wilder? Both of them represent the delightful virtue of a chocolate maker who doesn't overindulge in their own product.

Ezra Miller was WB’s original choice for “Wonka”. It was the producer, who knew him from “Fantastic Beasts”, who refused to cast him. Which, in hindsight, saved this movie. As Timothee Chalamet can actually act, and has not been arrested for assaulting women.

This was Wonka as he was first coming into the role of being a chocolate maker. Sure, he was naive and bright-eyed, but that's the point. He was new to the chocolate scene and would more than likely grow to be more cynical as he aged, especially when his own employees would steal his recipes. Anyone saying Timothy wasn't dark or crazy enough doesn't realize that people dont start out like that. It takes steps, gradually moving further and further into that role, so in a couple of decades, you could clearly see a difference between Wonka then and now.

Personally, I'd rather watch Godzilla Minus One for the Holidays. And I have no objections to the pronunciation Chalamet (the english language uses french words but the schools don't teach french grammer{?}) I could object to the wearing of the Holiday sweaters; but they are not ugly at all (silly maybe) Have you done a review of the new Godzilla movie? Will you review the new Anime movie The Boy & the Heron(?)
