There is no exaggeration in Rudyard Kipling describing the fort as “A Palace that might have been built by Titans and colored by the morning sun”. Perched on a rocky cliff at an altitude of 400 m above the cities skyline, the fort can be seen from almost any vantage point in Jodhpur. Though the fortress was originally constructed in mid 15th century by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, it was expanded with many palaces and structures by his descendants across 500 years. Most of the fort which stands today dates back to the 17th century and was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh. The fort is perched on a vertical Cliff named Bakhurcheeria which is 400m high above the skyline of Jodhpur and is spread over 5 Km. The walls of Mehrangarh are up to 36 m high and 21 m wide and protect some of the most beautiful and historic palaces in Rajasthan. Towards the leeward side of the Bakhurcheeria hill is the Rao Jodha Desert Park consisting of the ecologically restored vegetation of arid and desert land of 72 hectares. The area surrounding the desert park encompasses many volcanic rocks and sandstone formations from about 600 million years ago. The park also has a visitors gallery, cafe, and a native plant nursery. Strolling in the park, one can see some of the local birds, butterflies, and reptiles while gaining more insights about the flora and fauna of the deserts.

I am enjoying seeing India through the magical lens of a Pakistani/German citizen. As an Indian, I have not been to many of these places (Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan, Mysore), so this is very exciting for me to watch parts of India where every looks different from me, eats something that I have not seen before and speaks differently. Love the series and the positive comments from Pakistanis and Indians. Abrar bhai is a rockstar traveler and video story teller. Maybe the Indian goverment should hire him as a consultant for the "Incredible India" travel advertising, since he does such an incredible job!

Salaam from Sabina and Mum-The Fort with its location and different palaces and structures is mind blowing- Phool mahal/Sheesh mahal/Moti mahal/Diwaane Aam/Diwaane Khas, the lake- wonderful architecture and interior designs, very unique- people from that era were experts, we don't make them anymore!! How they have built those structures on top of a hill, without technology, and only using elephants to carry the materials, is no less than miracle- truly unbelievable. Sitar and Sarod as background music add to the beauty of the place. What I do not understand is the reason the houses are blue- any specificity to Jodhpur? Well, only Abrar has managed to show us the uniqueness of Jodhpur, despite having watched so many documentaries on this place. Well done again, bravo.

Hospitality is what one encounters everywhere in our subcontinent. However, Jodhpur (the Marwar area of Rajasthan) has unique traditions that take hospitality several notches higher.
I experienced this firsthand when, due to office work, I had the chance to spend 2-3 weeks at Pali (a district close to Jodhpur), some 20 years ago. Because of some contacts, I got invited for dinners at local households on 3-4 occasions.
Normally, we lay down the dishes before the guest. Even if we are serving the guest, we give him the choice to have those things that he likes and thus eat to his satisfaction whatever he chooses. Once his plate is empty, he is requested to have more. But, if he is not keen, the point is not pressed further. It does not happen this way in Marwar.
The hosts feed the guest with great love and insistence. They believe in ensuring that one is full to the brim and has no room to have even one more morsel.
Normally, freshly made dishes are served before the guest. It happens one dish at a time. So, the guest does not have the foggiest idea of when things are ending and what more is going to be placed before him. As a result, the guest usually ends up eating more than he normally does.
No doubt, the food is offered with great love. But, for moderate eaters, like me, it can sometimes seem like a punishment.
Another unique feature is that sweets (quite a few of them) are served at the beginning. Elsewhere, in India, especially in the North, sweets are served at the end.
Marwaris (those who come from the Marwar region in Rajasthan) are intelligent lot and are very competent businessmen. Quite adventurous, they have branched out of Marwar. They can be found in every nook and corner, not just in India but elsewhere too. Another great quality of the Marwaris is that they are inclusivists. Wherever they settle down for their business needs, they adopt the language and culture of the place and merge seamlessly into the local scene.

The best part of this series by Abrar Bhai is that he's embraced the chaos of multi cultural multi linguistic nation like India rather than being judgemental about it. Enjoy your stay dost, and hope just like you've travelled to North through the west coast, similarly you get the opportunity to travel down the East coast to North someday. Trust me, you'll feel like you've visited another country. That's the amount of variety encapsulated in my old & great country.
