A few things that actually helped to control my hairfall include: (1) I discontinued wearing ponytails because it causes tension damage. (2) I began massaging my scalp 2 times a week with liitleextra cocoonnion hair oil while bending over & holding my head upside down to allow blood flow to the scalp. (3) Covering my head while moving out to shield my hair from pollution. (4) Using mild shampoo again from liittleextra only to cleanse my hair.
(1/3)You’re welcome. The first year I went natural I pre-pooed every time I washed my hair, and witnessed amazing benefits. After a while I stopped pre-pooing as much and notice that I was experiencing more split ends then usually. I have gone back to doing them all the time again and will “never” stop again lol
**video notes** *Hydro fatigue and protein loss* *• How your hair dries:* hair stands always hold a certain amount of water molecules. Normally when you wash your hair with prepooing your hair strands will soak up a lot of water and swell up. As the water quickly escapes, it takes with it needed moisture and protein from your hair. Your hair strands contract back to its normal size. In this state your hair is week and very prone to breakage, even from just touching it. Coconut oil prevents your hair from absorbing so much water. Due to its straight linear chains and low molecular weight it can penetrate into your hair and prevent that. Conditioners do not pre-poo the hair. It will help add softness, however due to its chemical structure; it doesn't protect the hair from protein loss and hydral fatigue. That's not the purpose of conditioners.
Awesome video! They are so informative and scientific and excite my inner hair geek! I didn't pay attention much in my science classes in high school but I love this! AND YESS FOR YOUR JESUS SHIRT! I love seeing others rep my Lord and Savior!
Yes, I still recommend to pre poo even before a mud wash. Mud washes are not as damaging as reg shampoos but the warm water used during any wash still lifts your cuticles and swells up you strands. Pre pooing will minimize this effect
I just watched this vlog again and was able to receive so much out of it...more than the first time. I did not have success with coconut oil in the beginning but thanks to another RUclipsr [naturally Quinn], I am pre-pooing now with coconut oil. What I do now is dampen my hair with warm water and then apply the coconut oil. This method allows for the coconut oil to NOT sit on top of my hair. My hair is very moisturized now and a bit more easy to detangle. The things you learn the second [or even third] time around.
The purpose of prepooing is to prevent hygral fatigue from the wetting of your strands. Putting water on your hair first does not prevent hygral fatigue, it contributes to it.
I just wanted to let you know that I tried the Hydrolyzed Protein treatment today and I am so pleased with the results. I can't remember the last time my hair looked and felt so healthy. I've never given my hair a protein treatment and now I know this is exactly what it needed. My curl pattern is back and my usually thin fine dry looking hair looks full and lustrous. Thanks so very much for your expertise and your products. Bless
(3/3)The straw like feel some people find with coconut oil is usually related to using too much product that hardens a bit when the temperature cool because coconut oil solidifies at a fairly low temperature so a cold winter breeze can stiffen hair very fast. I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any more question :-)
Excellent video! Totally didn't expect the thorough explanation of hygral fatigue at the end. The checklist comparing the the two was wonderful and I was hoping for a more scientific, fact-based explanation. Was happy to watch this once and move on but the information and visuals you provided outlining how coconut oil helps your hair is informative, easy-to-understand, and well done. Very good job, and thank you for your efforts!! 👍🏽

Okay... so I'm back! I tried this method a week & a half ago & I must say I've noticed a big difference from my previous shampoos. My hair has more shine & I am loving it!
Thank you soo much for the support, I really appreciate it. My hair was not wet before I added the conditioner and the coconut oil. But, I suggest to have your hair at least a little bit damp before you add anything to it.

Thanks for the comparison. Very informative and used a good solid method of testing. I current use both a conditioner and natural oil mixture to prepoo my hair because I am able to detangle my hair whereas oil and water alone did not work for me
(2/3)And No, coconut oil does not contain any protein and cannot be use for a source of protein. It is a seed based oil that s presses out of the coconut seed by heated it up and straining the oil out.
I've been watching your videos all morning, very helpful. I really enjoy your videos, messages and knowledge. I will be trying this method. Keep the videos coming and thank you for taking the time to put your knowledge out there for us all.
Yes you can, It won't hurt. What concerns me, is that you don't shampoo your hair. Conditions are engineered to deposit nutrients, it's not effective enough to remove dirt and build-up (especially on your scalp). To maintain good scalp health you should shampoo your scalp at least once a month to remove harmful buildup.
There's not really any other oil that has ALL the characteristic coconut oil has. But, as far as its penetrating characteristic, you're right EVOO and avocado oil both have that same abilities. But, as a side note, I trust avocado oil more then I trust olive oil. I'll be coving this in a future video
After sitting under the hooded cap with the coconut oil can i just apply the onion mix and than shampoo? Or rinse the oil out, onion mix, than shampoo?
Coconut oil before shampoo always leaves my hair and scalp in the best condition. Plus I love the smell of coconut oil. It's such a treat:-) great information in your videos
Since detoxing with bentonite clay and using coconut oil and milk in my hair, it's so much smoother, shinier and stronger (Oh and washing with 22nd century bar shampoo). On my next wash day I'm going to try the onion juice (praying it likes my hair and scalp). Thanks for sharing your knowledge it's really liberating and inspiring. May God continue to bless you according to his will. Have an amazing day 🤗
I personally use both coconut oil and condition mixed for my prepoo. The oil does the moisterizing and the conditioner adds softness. I also find it easier to apply and love the way it smells. I don't mind the extra money b/c I only have a twa so I don't need the extra product. I put it on the night before shampooing and sleep in a plastic cap. My hair feels soft and healthy!
Girl you are a natural born genius! this is exactly what's wrong with my hair! it only breaks when it is soak and wet! I'm going to do this method! Thank you so much for this video!
This may leave ur hair hard & sticky. First, per-pooing ur hair w/ HEAT (especially in ur case) before washing & conditioning is very beneficial for all hair types. Secondly, a little goes a long way w/ low porous hair. For daily use, only use a little coconut oil & try to mix it w/ lighter oils like almond & jojoba oil.
Coconut Oil is great for ALL hair types. I think what they may have been referring to is the fact that hair that is low in porosity does not absorb product to well (Due to its tight cuticle layers) coconut oil solidifies when the temp drops.
Real Olive is also a great oil to use for pre-pooing. But I have certain issues with the olive oil industry in this country. I will be coving this in detail in the future after I conclude my research/investigation. So for now stick with coconut oil for pre-pooing =)
Sure you can. I recommend olive oil over sweet almond oil for pre-pooing b/c of its penetrating qualities. Just make sure the olive oil is green and not yellow :-)
What does it mean if it is yellow? And I've tried a mask of olive oil, deep conditioner and honey on my hair. But when i rinsed it off (maybe after an hour or longer) my hair was hard/not soft. Did I leave it on for too long?
This was extremely helpful! After two years I've been trying to get a solid regimen down, and have been torn between to pre-poo with Conditioner or Coconut Oil. Thanks a Bunches!
Wow I really enjoyed this video! I think this is my first times watching a Green Beauty video. I appreciate that this provided a scientific explanation in addition to a thoughtful demonstration
I am just starting to use coconut oil as a deep conditioner and did not know the other uses such as prepooing with it. I definitely plan to use this as a staple product and your video was very informative.
When I condition my daughter's hair last night I added coconut oil first and then added the conditioner. It detangled easier and was much softer than usual!
Such a beautiful young lady! You really seem to know what you are talking about! Thank you for educating me on this-however, can you use both conditioner and coconut oil in combination with each other in prepooing?
I quite like this video as it takes a very scientific approach to hair care which is something I rarely see. It gives a more general view on hair and is more convincing than personal opinion based hair tips (since everyone's hair differs, different products often produce different effects) as it relies on the basic structure and function of hair.
In other words, you CAN use them both as a combined prepoo treatment. I actually like that way a lot because my conditioner helps a lot with detangling too
The oils you listed will somewhat protect your shaft from protein loss but no way near as much as coconut oil due to its fatty makeup and penetrating abilities. The other oils will easily wash away before they have the opportunity to protect your hair.
thank you for your videos!!!! I have just stumbled upon your videos and am blown away. I love the way you explain everything. especially this video. I've been doing coconut oil pre-pooing for about 3 years now and the difference it has made on my hair is insane. I no longer need to use a relaxer to attain a straight texture. my natural texture has relaxed into beautiful ringlet curls. And the overall shine and health of my hair is literally almost perfect! can you do a video talking about avocado oil? I've tried it as well and had amazing results. Just wondering if it's for the same reason as coconut oil.
I washed my hair yesterday and I had the least amount of hair fall I have ever had. I pre-poo the night before and the took the braids down one by one and ran my fingers from scalp to end. Put it back into braids. Use a moisturizing shampoo, conditioner and then a deep conditioner. It was my best washday ever. It was longer than usual though.
What is your thought on using aloe vera as a pre poo? I use aloe vera not just as a pre poo, but also as a conditioner. Although in addition, coconut oil does wonders on my hair, but I have never used it as a pre poo alone. I pre poo using aloe and the coconut oil.
Thanks for explaining the difference. Especially the costs savings. I was on my way to buy some conditioner but I will stick to my messy coconut oil and honey pre-poo. My hair feels so stripped when I skip this step.
I tried both methods and honestly, the conditioner pre poo works so much better for me. I have naturally high porosity 3c (with a bit of 4a at the nape) hair and the oil makes my hair feel hard and doesn’t provide enough slip. I use an inexpensive conditioner with silicones as a pre poo/detangler and my hair loves it. It makes my wash day such a breeze. Oil only works well as a sealant in the LOC method for me (thank you for that video by the way. Using that method has changed my hair). Any idea why this is?
I don’t know my hair type but conditioner pre poo works on my hair and oils make situation worse my hair becomes oily frizzy and dry with oiling some parts remain oily some dry and some frizzy and curls also go away by the way I have fine hair not sure about porosity but my hair is protein sensitive hair become hard
I pre-poo with a hair masks (Alikay Naturals Avocado Moisturizing or the Honey Sage Deep Conditioner), and it's been working (significantly less breakage, knots, and tangles)...Also, products perform better...
Thanks , the video is very instructive and detailed giving soo much scientific explanations. I have never used coconut oil for prepoo, but olive oil works so well for me. What can be your point of view about this? Once more, thank you!
I learn a lot from your videos. I am on a natural hair journey and need this information. Thanks a lot for the time and effort you must take in getting this information out to everyone. There is so much I still need to know about my hair. I am in my late fifties and about to retire in a few years. I am so overworked and stressed at work I hardly know how long I have been on this journey, ( I think two years) but I do not think my hair is responding because I have no length differences. My hair, even when its stretched does not seem to grow more than about mid-neck or a little below my chin. When I was younger :) it never got really long either, though it is thick with a beautiful brown color that everyone tries to imitate. It is kinky in the middle- in the back, wavy or a little wavier on the top, and at the nape or bottom of my hair it grows so fast I have to cut it twice as much than the other lengths to even it out. (Right now I am practicing not cutting the bottom more often to see if that will give the other hairs on my head a chance to catch up:) That hair at the nape is between nappy and wavy which is the between texture of my top hair type and my middle-head hair type. I welcome any suggestions for styles, maintenance or anything that may help me grow more length.
Thanks for explaining what I should consider about and how to truly Pre-Poo my. I had noticed (what I consider) a lot shedding when I would wash or co-wash my hair and I didn't understand why. I thought I was doing all the right things, but clearly I wasn't. I'm about to try the Pre-Poo method with the Coconut Oil. THANKS SO MUCH!!!
I've always used olive oil to pre-poo..since I have low porosity, coconut oil would be too heavy. correct me if I'm wrong that's what I learned in your other videos!
Can you do a video about whether coconut oil is good for high and low porosity hair? I've read that its penetrating property means that it can dry your hair out by completely blocking water from entering your strands. I can't figure out whether it's causing my dryness. For now I only use it to pre-poo. What do you think?
@@cfoster6804 smh how do u kno if I read wat she wrote to da other person? Actually I didn't view da replies I jus commented. Besides I made dat comment over 2 years ago wtf
WOW great info I love coconut oil but only when my dad makes it for me I have yet to find a store bought one my hair loves as much or at all. Will try the pre poo method and see the difference...
Yes I did strand test my hair yesterday when I first heard about hair porosity. I was looking into purchasing a steamer and found out about its existence.
No, it's not. The key is to pre-poo with an oil that can penetrate the hair shaft, that will prevent hydral fatigue. Other oils that penetrate are sunflower, olive and avocado to name a few. Their rate of penetration might be slower than coconut oil though. Check out the Science-y hair blog for a proper list. Hth!! :)
What to use for a shampoo that's not completely stripping Also could you make a 2-4week starter calendar with all of your regimen? Rice water / onion water/ protein etc ? Obviously to be edited for personal use - but for a general idea? Maybe one for high porosity and low? Idk I would find it super helpful !! Thanks for all that you do
GreenBeauty hey there. I was wondering if you had time to create that calendar? I just don't know how to get all these treatments into one month and when I should do what. Thanks again xoxo
If I'm doing the water only hair method (and have been for about 8 months), should I pre poo with coconut oil to prevent hydral fatigue too? I used to rinse every day but now I'm rinsing every three days. I only use water, so I'm uncertain if using a cleanser like a shampoo or clay wash is a contributing factor to hydral fatigue. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
So glad I found your channel. Just subscribed yesterday and I plan on making a few purchases on your site. I appreciate how you explain in great detail the science behind hair. I've learned so much in the last day! One question, do you wet your hair before you add the coconut to your hair for the pre poo? It looked like your hair was wet but I don't think you said if you wet it or not. If you do wet your hair do you wet it with a spray bottle, submerge in water, or by rubbing water in your hair with your hands?
Hi from 🇧🇷, I noticed my hair is shedding a lot every time I apply coconut oil as a pre poo. The results are fabulous but the shedding is so frustrating. I did a research about it and I found out a lot of people complaining about the same thing for different reasons. I don’t know why this is happening to me lately. I am going to try grape seed oil instead. But I will miss the effect of coconut oil on my hair..☹️😟😞
I've been surfing youtube extensively and am puzzled that i've just stumbbled upon your channel??? Thanks for the informative and well produced vidoes! New subbie for sure!

Can you please do a comparison with aloe Vera and what alternative can be used for coconut oil if your hair doesn’t like
Yes! I guarantee you will notice a difference right away!!
this was VERY informational. thank you for this. im now prepooing with coconut oil!
I'm transitioning to natural hair and very Thankful I found your channel.
Should I mist my hair with water before I apply the coconut oil?
Yes you should definitely must your hair first to help relax your cuticles so the coconut oil can penetrate 💚
Thanks for the support !
From my mid shaft to the ends of my hair coconut 🛢️ oil work well on my high porosity hair.
Thank you Alicia... I'll be outlining that in detail in the near future.
I use this method its amazing love prepooing with different oils but coconut oil is the best
I've always used olive oil to pre-poo..since I have low porosity, coconut oil would be too heavy. correct me if I'm wrong that's what I learned in your other videos!
Coconut Oil as a pre-poo will not be too heavy for your hair b/c it will be washed out during the shampoo process.
I’m soo happy I finally found you!! I’m totally binge watching all your videos and lovin every bit of it!! 🥰
Your skin looks beautiful. It has an amazing glow!
Can you do a video about whether coconut oil is good for high and low porosity hair? I've read that its penetrating property means that it can dry your hair out by completely blocking water from entering your strands. I can't figure out whether it's causing my dryness. For now I only use it to pre-poo. What do you think?
I needed this 🙌. I’ve been watching your videos and they are exactly what I’ve been looking for, the educational side. Thank you.
Can I use both because I feel like conditioner really helps detangle my hair
Yes you can use both, just make sure to use the coconut oil first
Green Beauty Channel ™ instead of putting da oil and conditioner on seperately, can I mix them together first then apply to my hair?
i like to mix conditionner and olive oil instead of coconut oil
@@adraineholmes4566 No. Come on now you read what she wrote to the other person.
@@cfoster6804 smh how do u kno if I read wat she wrote to da other person? Actually I didn't view da replies I jus commented. Besides I made dat comment over 2 years ago wtf
Thanks for sharing your experiments with us. So, what is the purpose of conditioners?
WOW great info I love coconut oil but only when my dad makes it for me I have yet to find a store bought one my hair loves as much or at all. Will try the pre poo method and see the difference...
That was great info. The dryer dance is hilarious.
So true 💜I love coconut oil
The video is very informative and interesting. However I noticed the conditioner side looks shinnier than the coconut oil side.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing. I love your channel. Extremely informative, well delivered and factual.
Thanks for watching!
Yes I did strand test my hair yesterday when I first heard about hair porosity. I was looking into purchasing a steamer and found out about its existence.
Is coconut oil the only oil that prevents hydral fatigue?
No, it's not. The key is to pre-poo with an oil that can penetrate the hair shaft, that will prevent hydral fatigue. Other oils that penetrate are sunflower, olive and avocado to name a few. Their rate of penetration might be slower than coconut oil though. Check out the Science-y hair blog for a proper list. Hth!! :)
@@rutendosewani-matongo3473 yes. You are correct! Glad you shared that as many are unaware.
Could you please do a video on how, when and why natural hair - particularly 4c - gets "bouncy" and long when stretching? Thank you!
B/c when our hair is stretched it's never really completely straight so it still has body and bounce to it.
Thanks for sharing! I must try this method on my hair...I love your channel!
Over time yes definitely
What to use for a shampoo that's not completely stripping
Also could you make a 2-4week starter calendar with all of your regimen? Rice water / onion water/ protein etc ? Obviously to be edited for personal use - but for a general idea? Maybe one for high porosity and low? Idk
I would find it super helpful !!
Thanks for all that you do
That's a great idea! Will do
GreenBeauty hey there. I was wondering if you had time to create that calendar? I just don't know how to get all these treatments into one month and when I should do what. Thanks again xoxo
Try 22nd Century Natural Woman's shampoo bar. Look her up on RUclips. It's completely non stripping. I won't use anything else now.
This is such a good idea. Looking forward to seeing the regime on ‘paper’. Thanks for your channel it’s super informative x
Thank Green beauty 😘
Is it important to apply water to hair before applying oil? IN ORDER TO HELP OIL TO PENETRATES!!!
I absolutely love your videos. so helpful, so direct, so genuine. keep going ;)
Using less coconut oil will give you the benefits without the mess. Thanks for the informative video. :)
I've been surfing youtube extensively and am puzzled that i've just stumbbled upon your channel??? Thanks for the informative and well produced vidoes! New subbie for sure!
