Just a quick video showing how to replace the alternator on a 2014 Honda Odyssey. We got the alternator locally, but looks like they sell the same remanufactured model on RockAuto. It was a 'Pure Energy' brand Part # 10228. This is the 3.5L v6 engine which is also in the Honda Pilot and a few other models.
The tools used in the video:
small flathead screwdriver
10mm wrench and/or socket
12mm wrench and/or socket
13mm deep socket
14mm wrench and/or socket
6mm Allen type of Hex wrench
Serpentine belt tool or long handled box end wrench 14mm
Large Channel Lock Pliers or a pry bar to move the sliding dowel pin where the alternator mounts.
Thanks for watching!

Bro thank you!!! I did it in 3 hours. Would have been about an hour and a half but had a very hard time with removal and then install took heating the bottom bracket with a torch to make it fit since it was too tight just barely. She runs great and total cost $255.00 vs $450 for the part locally and $150/hr labor. Saved roughly $650-$700 bucks! Thanks man ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
same here, took me a long to remove things, easy to put them back. Saved $800 vs the $1000 the dealer quoted.
Your patience is remarkable lol. Especially when trying to shimmy it out. Those times are very frustrating for me.
Did it last night in 1:45. I just drained the Power Steering reservoir into a bowl and it made removal super easy! Thanks for the detailed video!
Would not have thought that it could have been done then watched you do it. Not so easy but did it following your instructions. Thanks, big money saver.
Great video. Helped me save a lot of money. One note. 11:10 that bracket was a nightmare to get off. I have a decent allen wrench set, but there is no way I could get the Allen bolt off in the car. So, I removed the alternator with the bracket on like you did. After that, I still could not get that bolt to move. I got creative with a hammer and hammered the bracket to "break the bolt seal" so I could remove it. I swore a lot in the project, but felt great that I was able to change the alternator myself (with your video's help). Thanks again
I had to do this job a few years ago in an auto zone parking lot. It was not fun, but this video has great tips that I wish I had seen back then. I will say taking it out and putting it back take some magic fingers to get things lined up, regardless of how you do it I think.
Thank you. This was perfect step by step, probably saved my kid (really me) a fortune.
Thanks. This was a neat flawless demonstration. It was tricky getting it out and the new one back in
I watched a number of other videos on this but yours is hands down the best. Clear video and at least twice you gave CRUCIAL tips that others left out. Thank you!
THANK YOU. I might have lost my mind trying to figure out how to get the alternator out of there. A few suggestions if anyone sees this comment:
1) pour out the overflow bottle into a clean container, and pour it back in afterwards. You WILL knock over the bottle, and it will leak.
2) The power steering reservoir can be maneuvered down and under the upper AC line and up on the other side of it to give plenty of room in the corner.
3) The little sleeve/dowel/bushing for the bottom bolt was stuck. I took a socket that just fits over it - I think I used 3/4" - and a bolt that fit through the socket and bushing with a little length to spare. Bolt through a washer, the drive end of the socket, the bushing, another washer, and a nut; tighten the nut, and the assembly presses the bushing back through to the other side (pressing it inside the socket). A ratcheting wrench is great for this. Just a little movement is all you need.
Thanks for the socket and bolt trick idea! I used that trick when I just changed my alternator and it really saved me!
@@LOLINC2010 You're welcome! RUclips University. 😂
@DaddyBeanDaddyBean this is an underrated comment. I'm a mechanically inclined guy. I fix most stuff myself. I'd never dream of doing certain things though, like injectors in a deisel for instance. Having the abilty to watch step by step someone else do it, gives me that knowledge to get it done. Saved my self thousands last weekend doing just that. I know how to do alternators, but stumbled upon this video because I'm having an issue getting the alternator out. It's stuck. Wiggles freely up and down, but will not lift out of its spot. Getting late, so going to get back at it tmrw. Literally have 10-20 mins left and of course that thing doesn't want to come out. Could be worse though!
@@overthinker1506 I spent a stupid amount of time at that step too, and then magically it slipped out. Took about 45 seconds to slip the new one in. 😳
Wish there was a way to give you money. You saved me a fortune today.
I’m no mechanic but I watch your video because I got to replace my alternator an I was curious how it’s done I’m still going to pay someone because I’m bad with taking things off an putting them back together 🤦🏾♂️ but I gave you a thumbs up an I subscribe to your channel maybe I might show your video to my uncle an see if he can do it 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thanks for this, just replaced mine and this video was my only tutorial! Thanks 1,000,000!
very helpful, awesome visuals on what your doing . I unfortunately have this job to do tomorrow but feel much better seeing it beforehand.
This was a very helpful video! My only addition would be that it really isn't that big of a deal to remove the powersteering resevoir and the raidator over flow. You get all of those hoses out of the way and that alternator came out with no issues at all.
Fantastic video! You literally saved me hundreds of dollars!
Your video was very helpful thank 😊
Wow! incredible video, great camera angles showing exactly what's going on! Life saver, thank you
Thank you. This video is a big help. It is definitely not designed to be readily removed.
Thanks so much for the video you posted. Without it I wouldn't be able to get the job done.
Happy to hear my video helped you!
Take care,

The best instructions. Great work thanks for sharing
Thank you for the video. I was able to knock this out today because of your help.
When I finally got the alternator out I screamed like a Viking that had just conquered a land and killed everyone in sight. My kids thought I was a little crazy. But it felt so victorious
Haha that’s awesome. That just made me smile.
Take care,
Dan
@@DantheFixitMan You had some really cool tricks That a few people missed in their videos. Getting it to seat back in there was hard because all of my big channel logs are in my work Van. But I got it done in about 3 and a 1/2 hours. Thanks man
Thank you for the great video! Made the change go MUCH better than fumbling through it on my own!
Lol you’re a stud, that’s all I can say. I’m in the middle of this and racking my brain trying to get it out. Watching you hold the tensioner while maneuvering the alt out 🤦♂️ I need 6 hands.
It took me 30 min just to get the alt slid out of the lower bracket that the long bolt goes thru. It was ubertight, pinched, HARD. Finally got it far enough out to where it wouldn’t move anymore, but the sleeve on the alt was showing. Had to slid a flat screwdriver in and pry the alt out, finally. This video is my alternator college right now lol.
It's definitely not a fun job, but glad you're getting it done. I hope this video helped you.
I just did a Honda Pilot Alternator the other day... Same Engine and set up, but slightly different...I will be uploading it soon. I had re-watched this video in preparation for doing the Honda Pilot and I realized I could've done some things a little differently...Unfortunately I won't have the new video uploaded in time to help you..
but hang in there, you'll get it done.
Take care,

@@DantheFixitMan thank you! One thing I didn’t notice on your video (maybe I skipped past it) but I also took the upper bracket off. I couldn’t see it squeezing past it. I can’t believe the way Honda has these things in there. Glad I don’t do this for a living.
Thanks for the great vid!
@@jotacalvo Yes, that's one of the things that I would've done differently on this job. I did take that upper bracket off when I did the alternator on the Pilot. That made it easier to get it out and of course, easier to put the new one in as well. The sliding sleeve at the bottom can be a bit tricky, but with the right amount of leverage and the right tool, you should be able to move it over as much as you need. The other trick is to wiggle the old alternator back and forth side to side after you have the bolts out but before removing it from the vehicle. That will move the sliding sleeve over just enough to get the new alternator in.
Best of luck with it. I hope you're able to get it back together without much trouble.
Take care,
-Dan
thanks for including the torque specs!
Thank you soo much for this video. Just changed mine tonight. 3 hours and a sore back later and it's done.
How can I buy you a coffee?
Hey Nick,
I’m just happy to hear it helped you!
Take care!
Dan
great video and assisted with the repair. the tensioner tip was life saver!!! thank you
Glad to hear that my video helped!

Thank you for making this video. I had to do the same job and it was very helpful to watch!
Fantastic video, the mini vans are realy hard to work on.
Is that pure energy alternator still working? On my 2014 the reman replacement went out after a little over a year. Then the replacement I just got a few days ago tested bad. They are the Ultimate Reman from Oreillys. Sucks these can’t be bench tested as it would help determine if it’s good or not before leaving the store. Now I don’t know if I should go with the NEW alternator or go with a DENSO I’ve read up on people getting. Maybe these life time replacement alternators just want you to keep replacing them instead of working
Such a bummer, might be worth going with the denso, but this one was working fine until the owner sold the car last year.
Best of luck with it.
Take care,
-Dan
Great video! Thanks for sharing. My alternator was just replaced in Sep 2021 and it went out the other day. Going off of the price I was charged last year for the new alternator, I'm assuming it's brand new and not remanufactured. Even if it was remanufactured, I would think it would last longer than 15 months. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to navigate this conversation with the auto mechanic because I feel they should replace it at no cost, however, there is no warranty info in the invoice. Also, what irritates me is that they gave me a quote for the whole service and when I showed up to pick up the minivan, they charged me an additional $150 becuase they said they couldn't access the alternator without 'evacuating and recharging A/C system'. Is that true? After seeing your video, I feel like I could almost do it myself.
Alternator replaced in Sep 2021: Ultima - BBB Industreies Alternator $452.85, while the labor was an additional $250.
Any insight or feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Thanks! Made the job go so much smoother
Great Video, had the same issue did it myself everything worked great Thank you so much
good job thanks for taking the time and sharing your knowledge
Be careful with the wiring harness, once you follow the steps here, there's a tiny purple wire that is still connected. I just yanked it out, thinking it was completely free. whoops.
If the alternator has a copious amount of oil on it, check if the spool valve is leaking. If it is leaking and the leak is not fixed, you'll be replacing the alternator again, probably within a year. Usually only the top half of the spool valve and the gaskets need replacement.
Great video..... This job would have been more difficult without it
Thank you for the video-super helpful!
Okay quick question. Let's say I replaced the alternator. Drove it for a week and it works fine. Now it's having the exact same issue where all the lights come on and it does not drive. Thoughts?
And a Mopar guy like myself. 2012 Ram I bought new and a 70 U code, numbers matching Challenger RT.
So cool!
Remove Serpentine Belt!!! Great video. I fought with the alternator pulling it out and finally got it, but it was ridiculous getting past the AC tubing, engine and pulleys. When I was putting the new one back in, it slipped right in. I had taken the serpentine belt off to inspect it right before putting the new one in. When the new one slipped right in with no issues my epiphany was born! With the serpentine belt out of the way, it gives you a tiny bit more space and the alternator will slip right out, up and to the left to the wheel well shelf. So F#$%ING easy! If I ever have to do this again to this vehicle, that will be the magic last tip.
Using the black bungee is also a huge help in getting it up and out.
Great video! ...So well done and helpful!
Yeah, sometimes they are stuck in there pretty good, try a large pair of channel lock pliers, or maybe a pry bar. Just be careful with what you’re prying against.
Best of luck to you!

How did you get the alternator past the AC hose, I've been working on mine for two hours just trying to get it past that hose.
Best way is to take out the headlight assembly so removal and replacement is easy.
Fantastic video friend.
I also managed to get mine out with the bracket still on. That bolt was completely seized and I didn’t have the time to wait for some oil to work on it. But the blue electrical clip… my enemy.
It much easier to get the alternator out and in if the smaller power steering reservoir line is off the tank and moved. Just suction out the tank and remove the small line, doesn’t drip much but I zip tied a latex glove finger over the tube ends. That 5 min step would have saved an hour of struggling. Plus your fluid needs to be changed anyway right?
Thanks for the helpful tip!
Take care,

@@DantheFixitMan appreciate the vid, I fought mine today and won lol
Thanks for the video. First start after install, the belt was quiet. But there has been a whine since the second start. 5 days running so far and everything works well, just louder than normal. All the bolts all torqued to spec. Not sure if the bottom bolt sleeve adjustment to get the new alternator in misaligned the alternator pulley? Replacement was from rockauto, Pure Energy (reman Denso).
Hi Jared,
Did you replace the belt with a new one? You might try that, or try tightening the belt up a little. I wouldn’t think the replacement alternator or moving that sleeve a little would cause much offset at all. Hopefully it’s just a loose belt.
-Dan the Fix it Man
@@DantheFixitMan I did not change the belt as it only has 3k miles on it. Only adjustment I see for the belt tension is to replace the belt tensioner on this engine.
Hi Jared,
Got it, thank you. Yes, I would have reused that belt too with so few miles on it...
And my mistake on the suggestion of tightening the belt...I was thinking of a different alternator replacement video that I did...(scratch that suggestion)
I guess it's possible that the pulley on the new alternator is not the correct one? I have had to change them from time to time on remanufactured alternators with the original pulley taken off the old alternator. I guess it's also possible, but less likely that the replacement alternator has a noisy bearing...You might try spraying a little bit of wd40 or something similar on the belt while it's running to see if that quiets it down...Don't spray a lot as it will make the belt slip, but I sometimes do that when trying to isolate a noisy belt sound.
Good video, thank you!
The ps reservoir simply slides up and out of the bracket. There’s no need to remove bolts. Good video, nonetheless. Ty bout to do my 2nd alt replacement. Did an ‘08 years back & now on my ‘13.
makes me want a subaru (note where they put the alternator)-----wish me luck
Nice work. Looks like patients much. 😎
There is no reason to remove the 2 bolts that remove the power steering fluid container. There is a clip on the bracket that releases the container from the bracket. At 2:04 your finger is pointing to the clip. Just pull that clip away from the container then pull the container straight up.
To make easier for me to remove then replace the alternator from the van, I removed the alternator from the top bracket by removing the allen bolt then I also removed the bolt holding the bracket on. This made it much easier to maneuver the alternator. It also helped me align the new alternator for the bottom bolt. Then I remounted the top bracket and bolted the alternator to it.
THANK YOU!!!
Watching this video as my alternator just crapped out on me. How similar would a Honda Odyssey 2010 set up be to this? The mechanic shop I went to estimated me at $1000+ for alternator replacement.
It should be the same process, best of luck to you!
Все отлично понятно буду делать так как в этом видео !!
Question, what is the name of the flashlight. I have a Milwaukee light but it is extremely bulky to work with.
It’s the braun light from harbor freight. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for mentioning your mistakes
Muchas gracias por tus videos yo mismo lo pude hacer mi esposa muy contenta me cocinó unos taquitos
Hola Jesus,
Me da gusto saber que mi video te ayudó.
Buen provecho!

What if the blue tab is broken?
That noco 1 Is next to useless for Car batteries. I have one. It will take 60 hours to never to change a dead car battery its only 1 amp. Its not a charger its a maintainer for keeping a battery that is 80 percent and bring it back to full in say 20 hours.
Get a 10 amp charger.
