Thanks for the videoJust changed one in a grocery store parking lot. Didn't jack it up or remove or loosen ac compressor. Just dropped washer reservoir and moved ac line. Thanks again.
I just replaced mine last Sunday. I didn't need to remove the tire. All I did was remove the top screw from the washer fluid reservoir and bend it to the left, then removed the power steering container from the bracket and zip tied it to the right side. The alternator was easily wiggled out from that space you just made. It did take a little effort here and there, but overall, it was way easier than removing the tire and the wheel well liner.
Questions: 1) did you totally remove the tensioner? 2) A/C compressor - just remove the mounting bolts? 3) What were your symptoms? Here's mine: battery light 'on', then VSA & ABS lights, acceleration slow. Oh, and new battery which won't charge once started.
@SWells679 1. No, i just removed the belt, 2. The only bolts i removed were the 3 for the alternator, 3. Yes, at first just the battery light, then going down the freeway the car studderred and then all the lights dame on, then as the battery became less charged, they flickered. Then the car could be jumped but would die instantly after taking the jumper off.
@@AmericansBee Thanx! Your symptoms sound exactly like mine. I kinda figured about the tensioner. Finna leave on family vacation tomorrow. Will tackle this when I get back. I appreciate your reply.
Thanks, I really appreciate the video. Already had my alternator loose in the engine compartment but could not get it out when I came across this video. It was very helpful!!
I once had to change an alternator on the side of the road (I think I had a junkyard spare with me, because I knew I needed one), and there was no way to get the alternator out of the car without taking the intake manifold off. I struggled for hours trying to find a way, and finally swapped the brushes/parts from the junkyard part into the alternator that was stuck inside the car. It worked perfectly, and I never had to mess with it again. It turns out, there was a way to get the alternator out that involved taking the wheel off and going through the fender well. This was before the easy availability of repair information on the internet, so I had no way of knowing that.
I have done this to my pilot basically same engine as you know. To me you did more work than necessary I only removed the washer fluid reservoir and power steering reservoir
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 yes sure 👍I have friends that have done it. Beside that like I said alternator is no difference to remove I’ve done it from both vehicles 👍
This looks ridiculous compared to my Subarus. My old ones were a 5 minute alternator swap. The new one is like 10-15 minutes. Both are right up on top of the engine.
A few months ago I did a similarly “easy” alternator on my 100 Series LC. I may have said some unflattering things about Toyota engineers in the process lol.
Hello 2 Stroke, I have a 2006 Honda Odyssey EXL. Yesterday all the lights came up on dash and battery went dead fast. I use it to work a taxi service. A mobile mechanic put another alternator on it.. everything check out good after he used his scanner.. my battery is good as well. After driving it about 20 miles yesterday, I parked it then woke up this morning and battery was dead again. He swapped alternator out for another and that alternator charged battery for a short while (but not at first) but after unplugging side plug from alternator and plugging back up, it starting working... but now battery dead again after driving it less than 10 miles... That's 2 new alternators and van is still doing same thing. Also he checked fuses and the ones he checked were good. Any tips would be great & much appreciated regarding what it could be. Maybe a fuse somewhere that people miss? Thank you
If it's a model with VCM I've read it has to be a Denso brand alternator, I'm about to change out the alternator on my sister's van for the 3rd time here in a minute..so I'll let you know lol
I had this issue with a leaking valve cover. The oil would leak onto the alternator. It was hard to diagnose because the leak would only occur once the engine warmed and built up enough pressure to leak. After removing the alternator and having it tested, it was charging better than a remanufactured replacement. I changed the front and rear valve covers and it never leaked or had charging issues ever again. These alternators typically outlast the vehicle.
thanks for ur efforts but u did not show how things done removing parts and putting them back and thats the main reason filming ur work to have pple who are watching ur video to have an idea HOW its done
It’s part of the business it’s not how long it takes your paying for the knowledge one has acquired over time.. what’s horrendous is ppl like you want everything for cheap.. if that’s the case may wanna work on your own vehicle.. if you don’t know how then don’t worry about the price when you need it done..

@@SWells679 for the tension pully? I just used a breaker bar, not sure the size

Ive done a few of them,, the first time is a pain, but after that, you learn the ticks,,
I like ticks!
Given the effort, what is the cost of a new tensioner?
Good point... probably just another $100. And they do wear out (bearings, I believe).

Maybe, but this is a minivan, so maybe it's even more cramped than a Pilot.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 it’s the same engine set up 👍
@@Trump4America2024 So the front end of an Odyssey will bolt on to a Pilot and fit around the engine?

@@Trump4America2024 LOL, I want to see a Pilot with an Odyssey front end.
Did that once with my gf’s dad 2 years ago with 2008 Odyssey. Don’t have it anymore. It was a pain to get it out.
Yes, very tight.
I took the alternator out on the top with the hook and string to hook it out. It is easier and less time consuming than your way.
I did a recused in Binghamton NY on a 2008 Oddy. Drove from NYC to up there 3.5hrs. Took alt from the top was ez.
Thanks for the handy tips. I have a Honda Pilot with the same engine. Now I know what I am up against.

Not just Subaru... most cars used to be this way until they started making money from dealer maintenance instead of selling cars.
The alternator on the 84 Camaro is stupid easy to replace, even a 5 year old could do it.
Yup , takes alot of patience and fussing
Mercedes used to have watercooled alternators in some cars. You don't even want to think about replacing one.
Next time, undo the upper radiator hose and push the radiator assembly forward, hold it with a bungie and pull it from there. Much easier.
Just take the cooling fans out,and move the washer and p/s reservoir, you did it the HARD WAY ,lol.

Should show the bolts on the alternator for removal and installation.. you cut a lot of the main parts out.. I’ll never use this as a reference
👍
Hey Stella 🐶
Done the hard way.
Probably charging by the hour
Definitely not the easiest ended up taking the passenger headlight out and got WAY EASIER
Even though it only took 7 minutes to change, I'm betting you charged for a few hours of shop time.
