I think the thing that's often overlooked about double headed axes is that you have two edges, meaning you sharpen half as often in the field. As well, you can have two different edge profiles that may be better for different tasks.

You know, never thought of it like that. Maybe you would have a sharp sword like head on one and a wedge splitting type head on the other?

Other than that, double headed axes are worse than normal axes. I'll rather have two axes than one double headed axe. Such thing is only meant to look cool and wholly ignored functionality.

The thing is at least in most cultures that use axes just carried a second axe on a leather belt. It left with more versatility by keeping weight of individual axes low, if the handle broke they had a back up, they could use both one in each hand if needed, and still worked to keep field sharpening down.

Double bitted axes were extremely popular in the Pacific Northwest. one side would be kept razor sharp for cutting clean wood easily, and the other would be a stronger more dull edge for cutting bark and other things that could harm a razor sharp edge.

Two reason's I can think of for why a dual bladed axe might be useful both in combat and chopping wood would be that the weight allows you to create more momentum to make more powerful hits on top of the fact that if one side breaks, chips, or just gets dull you could use the other head to continue the task at hand.

I mean the real reason is that each side has a different profile. one us thicker than the other so one can be used for felling/bucking and the other for splitting or working near the ground as the thicker edge is less likely to chip or dull.

and one of the most forgotten part in axe making is to round out the inside of the axe, as you can see the split where it hasnt fused, making it a weak point.
you can do it by either welding or using table vice, so you could use a hammer and a rounded metal stick made into a semi-chicel to round out the inside

I’ve used a double sided axe before, it was fun but too light to be very effective for chopping wood, and felt super sketchy during overhead swings (because your essentially trying to chop your head, and swerve a different direction at the last second)

They’re a felling axe one side is shaving sharp for felling the tree and the other side is duller and ground wider for chopping up the root ball so you don’t damage your sharp side burying it in dirt over and over. It replaces an axe and an adze.

I know other people have talked about double headed axes, but I grew up on a traditional farm and used an axe a lot. The main advantages of a double headed axe are that if one side starts to get dull, you just flip it and keep swinging, and you have extra mass to make each swing count more. In my experience, neither of those is really that game changing because you can just take a break for a few minutes and file your edge back if the axe isn't cutting well, and the mass gives you dimishing returns as it also tires you faster.
That being said, back in the day professional loggers liked a double headed axe because files were expensive and not everyone could afford one. Most axes were sharpened by a smith employed by the company doing the logging at the end of the day, so for them it made plenty of sense for them to use a double edged axe since it allowed them to keep working for a full day between sharpenings.

It's also worth noting that the process of using mild steel for the body and welding a high carbon billet into it to act as an edge is a very historically accurate technique, good steel has been extremely expensive throughout history, so it made making a bladed tool that could hold a good edge much more cost effective.

Back in the medieval era stuff like this was done as piece work so you buy the value of the piece in one go which means you don't get paid by the hour so any extra unnecesary detail would just add time and ultimately take money out of your childrens mouths. So long as it was functional and built well thats all that mattered.

A double-sided axe, also called a "double-bit axe," is designed to have a cutting edge on both sides of the axe head, allowing the user to quickly switch between a sharp blade for felling trees and a slightly duller edge for limbing or other tasks without needing to stop and sharpen the axe frequently, particularly useful for lumberjacks who worked long periods away from civilization; today, they are most commonly used for the sport of axe throwing due to their unique design

@@cyber-demon6847 Then you don't watch actual Charlie content. Ever lmao. He's reacted to I did a thing multiple times. Try actually watching the streams maybe :).
Charlie will shut this down anyway. He's very against these type of channels existing after previous drama with a few of them. So now he has a team that will target these channels. So I suggest you start joining the actual streams.

Your an unhinged weirdo and no doubt the kinda people charlie doesn't like 🤣🤣 I've watched him and one other youtuber for over 10 years now, so from one true fan to a person, he knows these channels exist, you would know that if you watched every stream, and you would also know he doesn't give af. Also he doesn't react to youtube videos anymore so I watch these every day

@@bruceleroy7125 it's funny because this is some eastern european kid who rebranded his channel to Charlie reacts. He also buys likes to pump the videos up in the algorithm. It is a shame. I was very surprised to learn that Charlie doesn't care about people profiting off of him.
