I was hanging out at my grandparents (I used to go there after school and wait for my dad to pick me up), and this came on. My grandmother was a devoted Mike Douglas show fan and this was about the last thing she expected to come on. It took her a bit to suss out the lyrics but when she did she nearly had a heart attack. Unfortunately for her, she wasn't in the best of health and didn't have a remote control. She started screaming at my grandfather, who was asleep, and then at me, to get one of us to get up and change the channel. Neither of us made it to the TV in time. There’s just something so beautiful and pure about this song. The guy has a hard time expressing how he feels about the girl and she makes it easier by telling him that she loves him. The echos “go all the wayy” pulls you into the scene - making you feel the way they, the guy and girl, feel.
Out of nowhere, I found myself listening to this at least 8 time today (so far). It is such a perfect representation of what is known as "Power Pop." Aw, heck, it's just a terrific song! MA-MA YEAH!!
butchtropic - I remember watching an interview with Wally Bryson somewhere on youtube (now I can’t find it. Might have been taken down), and he mentioned the Who as being one of the biggest influences the Raspberries had, several times. Especially on the opening riff of this song. I can definitely hear it too. And yes, those 4-part layered vocal harmonies definitely have some Beach Boys/Beatles in them. Then add the fact that Eric could write these insane melodies, and the end result is about as close to perfect as it gets. Potent stuff.
Listening to this at age 12, in my parents' 1965 Ford Galaxy-500 with the scorching-hot vinyl bench seats, the seat belt tucked somewhere under the seat, with the one tiny speaker in the front metal dashboard... LOVE IT!!
Oh Eric, what an amazing voice you have! I remember buying the solo album "Eric Carmen" in 1976 and playing it over and over again! Love the Raspberries songs too.
Just heardvabout the untimely passing of Eric Carmen. I lovedcthexsong Go All The Way, back in the early 70's, and his solo work, such as All By Myself, then in later years in the movie Dirty Dancing with Hungry Eyes. RIP Mr. Eric Carmen, thanks for all the great music😢!
I loved the vocals of Eric Carmen!! What a time to grow up!! The Raspberries,Todd rundgren, badfinger, so much great music!! The songwriting was incredible!!
the problem is when people talk about 70s music they talk about so much of the shit. Mainstream disco, AC/DC, ABBA, Fleetwood Mac. the real gems of the decade were the guys you mentioned, with the odd Billy Joel and David Bowie type thrown in.
@Thou Swell Abba, Queen and Styx are complete and utter garbage, and some of those (such as The Guess Who) barely enter my mind (I'm English where they had basically no mainstream power). this is of course my opinion, and unlike you I shall respect yours and the ability to like them. I like the other bands mentioned besides BTO, who I don't know.
I didn’t know about Eric Carmen’s death until now I was 2 months late.😢 I can say I watched this video so many times since I discovered Raspberries in 2016 his music and voice really hit home for me. R.I.P to another legend 🕊️
Fantastic, reminds me of laying out at the pool on a bright sunshiny day. They used to have the music playing over the loudspeaker and I would listen to it all day long
Eric Carmen is one of the most underrated great rock and roll lead singers. The same could be said for the band also. The Raspberries music is captivating and triggers your emotions. A great combination of musicians that had so much more to offer if they stay together. I love this band and never get tired of listening to them.
Came across this song again surfing the dial on my way to work. Hadn’t heard it in years and haven’t stopped playing it since. Have been on a round trip to the 70’s all day. Thanks for the memories guys. Blessed I got to live through when rock ruled me he world.
I remember coming home ,.. when I was in grade 9 , and watching the Mike Douglas show ...and seeing the Raspberries....And I’m thinking ...this song is Great ! ....Also ,I can remember hearing it on the radio ,..and thinking ..I love this song! Please take me back! I miss the good old days ...and the simpler time ..people are happier!
This song is beyond genius. Its pace, the opening tied with the end, enclosing the beautiful middle. And the vid, enchanting. Where did this all go? What the hell happened to music?!!
Music went to shit, pardon the expression. The corporate takeover and control where making piles of money is concerned. It's become much more about marketing, fashion, and in your face sex than the music itself. Not to mention the generation that created all that great music have sadly either retired, died, or fallen off the radar.
Agree with you 100%. Once corporations get their claws into something they strip it of any creativity, originality, and substance. Music today is mass-produced junk...just like so many other corporate products.
I still say I'm going to kill myself at times. Won't happen in my case because I have a great life and for the majority of us anyway urge overrides thought. But at 53 I have tools to be mostly happy as opposed to laying in bed. Counseling by doctor's referral years ago for $125 a pop I budgeted. That set me on a course out of the chronic trap of thought misery. However, alternatively it does not cost a dime at least through our community health in BC. Show up to something social you might like, avoid religion and keep going is what I would say to someone crawling out. Because people are there pulling and supporting. I found a gold mine for me too called 'Jay Uhdinger' on my public playlist. His series is worth watching. Don't ask me how to share it but if you or anyone else is interested go for it or let me know if you can't find it and I will send the link.
I used to work in car sales. Sold the drummer, Jim Bonfanti, a car. He lives just a few minutes from me. One of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet.
Did he say anything about having to sit and pretend to play so docilely? He looks like he's being neutered onstage since he can't hardly bash the cymbals!
I want to go back too. We had it great then. 70's and 80's were the best decades ever. After that, the middle class started disappearing and with that, the good music, the good paying jobs and the freedom also disappeared. Greed took over and destroyed the world with poverty, pollution, bad drugs, people shooting each other, police brutality. I could go on and on, but they can't take away the greatest music ever from us. This is ours to listen to and relive the past. Now we have cell phones and internet which has caused young people not have any social skills. Now big brother can spy on us and know what we are doing at any time. No more privacy. And now we have Covid 19 that will never go away. Eventually everyone will contract this horrible virus. Once again, greed has caused this also.
I am saddened today to hear about the passing of Eric Carmen. He was a talented singer, songwriter, and musician. Thankfully, he has left a wonderful body of work to be appreciated for generations to come. RIP 🙏
Love ❤️ everything . The hair, clothes, energy, and above all the song and sound of the times, the music. Wish I were back in that era. Amazing! Peace and Love
I was so lucky to be a kid in the 70s. I got stung by the music bee very early. My mom and dad always playing music in the house and in the car signing and dancing.
@Chris Manzi I agree but the '70's was also a time of tremendous upheaval and change in our country. Songs about equal rights for women, ending the Vietnam War voting rights and access to education employment and civil rights were as much of a part of the 70s, as the feel good music of the raspberries etal. Less we forget Nixon was impeached and left in disgrace
I'm only 42 and have lost my dad and brother four years ago and 9 days ago, respectively speaking. If it weren't for them I'd not have this great music. But I'd give anything to have them back for just a minute.
In 1973 this tune spun heads and continues to this day. It has so much energy . It is a hard act to follow. Of the best groups ever! Eric Carmen is a master guitarist and knows how to throw in strong expressions. Very unique talent here.
Love this song. Think I heard it by my teen son off Guardians of the Galaxy 70s soundtrack. RIP Eric Carmen 🙏 what a special voice and into his solo career in the 80s like Never gonna fall in love again loved it so 💟🥲😘🪩🌟💫☝🏼☁️☁️☁️🇦🇺
Watching all the great performers from that era brings a smile to my face. I have every song from the seventies that was worth listening to. Nothing from the 90 or after. Many of us were blessed having grow up in the 70's. So many memories. Went home a few years ago and ran into a friend who came over to my house and we would listen to Frampton all night long. Next day wake up and get back to school on time. Not that young anymore. The 70's, The Girls, The Cars, The Music. Yes the Music. How I miss the 70's. Anyone have a time machine. I would never leave that era if I could.
Nothing from 1990 or later, not a single thing? It seems weird to just stop listening and cut everything off there. It would indeed be great to have "every song from the seventies that was worth listening to," but I'm a bit dubious about the claim. Heck, I'm still finding good stuff from that decade that I missed at the time, but I can say the same for every period of music in my lifetime.
I miss the singer song writers of the 70’s! Back when there was no such thing as a boy band or Disney studio created faux band. I’ll never forget sitting next to my record player (so I could flip it over right away) listening to James Taylor, Carole King, Roberta Flack, Fleetwood Mac, Cat Stevens, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Seals & Croft, Paul Simon....😊
Absolutely nothing from anything past the 90s !?!?! Very closed minded. Although I listen to a lot of music from 70s & 80s I still think there have been a lot of great rock tracks after these decades . You’re definitely missing out if it really is the case that you haven’t listened to anything past the 80s !
i distinctly remember 1974 some guys from Kings Highway, Brooklyn were driving me and my friend home and this came on the radio. I said to Irene - "i love this song!"

butchtropic - I remember watching an interview with Wally Bryson somewhere on youtube (now I can’t find it.
The box he was using was set to 'AWESOME'
99% of the music from the 70's will always stand the test of time...always...😆
70s-ruled,70s ruled, 70s ruled
The 80s are great also l had a lot of 45 in the 70s
P. S. Yes! I was born in the best music decade! 😎
Tim Penfield yes it did, yes it did, yes it---did.
I love it too. But Yummy Yummy, not so much lol. We had some real stinkers too. 😉
I could hear this song all day long and never tire of it.

I’m starting to get a little obsessed with this video😬.
Listening to this at age 12, in my parents' 1965 Ford Galaxy-500 with the scorching-hot vinyl bench seats, the seat belt tucked somewhere under the seat, with the one tiny speaker in the front metal dashboard... LOVE IT!!
Rock and Roll when it was really great . 59 this year and I can still rock out to this !
Minus the drugs and sex I presume? 🤣
Oh Eric, what an amazing voice you have! I remember buying the solo album "Eric Carmen" in 1976 and playing it over and over again! Love the Raspberries songs too.
I can't believe that Eric is gone. Damn.
May your soul be thrice blessed, Ace.
One of my fave songs of all time! Still gives me chills!😃😜
for some reason this song was on a loop in my brain lately in June 2024
I loved the vocals of Eric Carmen!! What a time to grow up!! The Raspberries,Todd rundgren, badfinger, so much great music!! The songwriting was incredible!!
the problem is when people talk about 70s music they talk about so much of the shit. Mainstream disco, AC/DC, ABBA, Fleetwood Mac. the real gems of the decade were the guys you mentioned, with the odd Billy Joel and David Bowie type thrown in.
@Thou Swell couldn't disagree more. the 70s was home to some of the worst music of the last 100 years.
@Thou Swell ayy, we can agree there!
They used to have the music playing over the loudspeaker and I would listen to it all day long
This comment caused me to think of Johnny Nash .
I bought this 45 in the summer of 72' , what great memories, what great music!

Eric Carmen is one of the most underrated great rock and roll lead singers. The same could be said for the band also. The Raspberries music is captivating and triggers your emotions. A great combination of musicians that had so much more to offer if they stay together. I love this band and never get tired of listening to them.
RIP Eric Carmen. Thank you for this song, which has such happy memories for me from a sweet bygone era.❤
Came across this song again surfing the dial on my way to work. Hadn’t heard it in years and haven’t stopped playing it since. Have been on a round trip to the 70’s all day. Thanks for the memories guys. Blessed I got to live through when rock ruled me he world.
the 70's the best times life was good now here were are in2022 life does not seem the same wish i could be back then
I remember coming home ,.. when I was in grade 9 , and watching the Mike Douglas show ...and seeing the Raspberries....And I’m thinking ...this song is Great ! ....Also ,I can remember hearing it on the radio ,..and thinking ..I love this song! Please take me back! I miss the good old days ...and the simpler time ..people are happier!

Oh, okay! Thank You! I am an old phart. Was thinking about the original with Jonathan Frid from the 60's and 70's.
Me🎉🎉
RIP Eric...thank you for all your music
One of best 70s songs... and there were a lot of great 70s songs
Those years { mid 70s etc . } were so rich with fabulous songs and music.. I was 22 when this song came out.....

Agree !...Eric Carmen is a musical genius songwriter and performer. The Raspberries had some good hits also.
vgotnofingers Like literally anything else, it evolved to survive.
Truly an underrated song and group. I was a teenager when this song came out, and I still love it today!
💭 I love how it come in hard rocking, then goes into a balled style, then back to rock! 😎🎵❤👍🏻
Takes me back in a good way out of my struggle with depression. Hope others can recollect their lives in a similar way.

With me I had been connecting old songs with old baggage instead of simply enjoying the songs on their own.
Yes Todd, music saved my life many times, and continues to this day.

ERIC'S VOICE IS INCREDIBLE !
What a great performer. He will be missed . A Cleveland legend.
Brings back memories of HS in the early 1970's.
@Chris Manzi What part of "PRETEND to play" did you not understand?
I had to do this on a TV show before, it's brutal, you just want to attack the drums!
I've seen some bands though when lip synching the drummer was playing the drums normally without it messing up the performance.

This is home for me, god how I wished I could go back!
ZnenTitan Im with ya. I'd go back to the 70s and stay.
Roxie Gentle Pitt Bull ....u said it...1973-1979 everything is new and exciting during those years
yup
Yes I wanna go back so bad
I’ve always thought this is a perfectly composed song put together with all the elements of a great hit .Done the best possible way
Rest in Peace Eric. Thanks for the great music!
Sophie Duvall the 70s were great. The hair, the clothes, the music. If I could go back, I would stay in the 70s.
I was so lucky to be a kid in the 70s. I got stung by the music bee very early. My mom and dad always playing music in the house and in the car signing and dancing.
Greatest decade by far!
I guess you forgot about the protest of the Vietnam war, civil rights movement, Nixon impeachment, ERA, Rowe v Wade
One of my all-time favorite songs from the 1970s. Such an awesome song and Melody.
In 1973 this tune spun heads and continues to this day. It has so much energy . It is a hard act to follow. Of the best groups ever! Eric Carmen is a master guitarist and knows how to throw in strong expressions. Very unique talent here.
RIP Eric
Thanks for the music and memories
Love this song. Think I heard it by my teen son off Guardians of the Galaxy 70s soundtrack. RIP Eric Carmen 🙏 what a special voice and into his solo career in the 80s like Never gonna fall in love again loved it so 💟🥲😘🪩🌟💫☝🏼☁️☁️☁️🇦🇺
Love, love, love this song from back then! Brings back a ton of feelings. Long live the 70's! Thankful that I lived 'em.
Sounds like a great theme for a bar!
Truth
Absolutely nothing from anything past the 90s !?!?! Very closed minded. Although I listen to a lot of music from 70s & 80s I still think there have been a lot of great rock tracks after these decades . You’re definitely missing out if it really is the case that you haven’t listened to anything past the 80s !
Literally bumped into Eric Carmen in a stairwell in New York City!! Will never forget it!!
i distinctly remember 1974 some guys from Kings Highway, Brooklyn were driving me and my friend home and this came on the radio. I said to Irene - "i love this song!"
I was 12 yrs old in '74 ❤️ still listening this to this masterpiece in 2022❤️
I want a show of hands!
This is a great hard rock song!
Its a great Pop song for sure! Far out!
"Hard rock"? Seriously? No. Just no. And it's not a "precursor of heavy metal," either. It rates well as good power pop, though.
Love the song, don't thinks it's Hard Rock though.

Thank you so much Eric for helping me grow up in the incomparable 70s. ❤️
Still loving this song in 2022 ❤️
I love it when he grins or smiles...changes his face completely. Reminds me of Jr. High School. Great song!
I was only 17 years old when this song came out! I still love this song at age 65.
Just read the very sad news of Eric Carmen's passing. Rest in Peace sir and thank-you so much for all the great music. This song in particular is a big favorite of mine. Thank-you again.
