Some people collect paintings, some people collect headphones, some people collect guns, some people collect stamps... It's pretty much art. Collecting art is pretty standard around the world since the beginning of civilization. And art is different from everyone - people from all walks of life can be drawn to collecting.
But like you said, its personalized art. It reflects what brings you joy; similar to how fashion can be self-expression. Plus, again as you said, it can be social and it can also expand to other hobbies: vlogging, potentially going into cosplay, drawing/illustration, and of course, watching the actual anime :)

Reasons I collect?
1)I have always been interested in anime and getting something that remind me of that anime that is (relatively) long lasting kind of appeals to me.
2)I use A LOT of my figure to remind me of event and people in my life. As an example my first ever figure was a mikasa figure and what that figure ment to me was my brother would always want to talk about Attack on Titan with me and he has helped me a lot through life.
3)I would have to go with your personal decor part. Its a way to show how much I really like anime and I also just like that my specific collection, after looking further into it, speaks about my life here and there.
That is really interesting that your figures make you remember a certain person or event in your life I never thought of it that way !

I’m obsessed with just collecting THINGS
When I was little I had my dolls, my lps, and as I grew up I started my anime figure, keychains, and posters collection. 2 figmas, 2 nendoroids, 2 keychains and 5 posters. Not very big, but I intend to make it bigger.
Also manga books. I have 13.
We have enough social pressure, orders to obey in work/school/etc, we have enough hard challenges to confront everyday with health/money/taxes/family. On the opposite side, in my eyes, art (and love for art) should be a free space, with the capacity to brings you joy, harmless fun, beauty, culture and, yes, a bit of freedom we shouldn't have to apologize for.
People are interesting aren't they? I'm a 31 year old UPS driver who has a shelf of Kancolle nendoroids, half of them bought by my wife as gifts. When people visit they often say "I would've never guessed...." XD
For me, figures are art. Artists spend countless amount of hours creating concept art, determining the right material, and ensuring that when the piece becomes 3D it's perfect to what they envisioned! These are the same steps taken by any sculpture artist. As such, to not only be able to have a piece of art, but also memorabilia of something that has had a great impact on my life is amazing! Not to mention, the thrill of finding something you've been looking for for such a long time is such a fun feeling xD
Collecting for me has always been about surrounding myself with things that I love. It makes me overwhelmingly happy to see the things I hold dear to my heart in some sort of physical/tangible form in from of my eyes. When I was little, I'd collect Pokemon toys/cards so that I could look at them and display them whenever and however I'd like. Nowadays my collection has certainly branched off into so many different things including but not limited to anime figures, and I love it. Sure, it hurts my wallet a lot, but honestly, I think it's probably worth it in the end. All that matters is you find joy in what you do, and if that's in collecting, then that's a-okay. :)
I collect because I want be be surrounded by the things I like/love. It bring joy to me whenever I had a bad day.
Seeing my favourite characters there, motivate me whenever Im feeling down.
Awesome video Jess, I learned we have a lot in common in terms of us both being collectors deep down haha. You started with Nail Polish, I started with Sailor Moon cards lol. Collecting figures is not just a hobby for me anymore either, it is still that but it's also a community of friends where we can be weebs together haha.

I think the reason i got my figures is because they are from shows that change me in a way or that simply made me happy at that time, they remind me those good days :)
Great video, Jess!I too am a collector at heart. I collect plushies, figures, dolls, anime merch, books and stationary.I love all things cute and to be surrounded by cute stuff. I love what you said about 'Personalised decor' because that's also true for me. It creates a little happy place to go to, makes the place more "me". One aspect about figure collecting that I like is that since they are more expensive than other stuff I collect, I have to research, deliberate and then decide if I want it. That way, I can have the exact stuff I want and not regret in a long run. I'm very picky about how they should look, so that way I end up only with stuff that make me happy.

My top reasons why i started collecting which was 3 years and 3 months ago, started when my sister moved out and i finally got a bigger room. This sparked to develop of actually collecting figures, i had allready a few of marvel and dc and such but the few months before i got my bigger room my interest in anime went a lot higher. Cause back then i was really casual if it was about anime.
It started with collecting basically anything what was anime related even when i did not know the anime. Until i saw this cute and sexy Sonico pink space police prize figure. Eventually I collected more of her and more and more that i decided to put 90% of my collecting to focus on anything Sonico related.
Conclusion of my top reason is that it somehow full fills me, and it is like a goal to have the biggest Sonico collection it also just makes me more happy :)
I originally started collecting prize figures only of characters from my favourite shows. But over time, I began seeing the appeal of scale figures- especially when I got a MFC account and watched more videos from the figure collecting community. I am not a hardcore collector, but the figures I do own might be small in quantity- but in the long run it's the quality that matters for me. Because I personally feel if I buy regularly then it would take out the fun in the figure collecting for me. I also collect manga and books- but figure collecting is something completely different that makes me really happy and I have never could have predicted this hobby was for me. These figures when I look at them bring back such fond memories of the anime I watched- not to mention they make me very happy. Also, recently I have gotten really into nendoroid photography- which I have found very enjoyable.
P.S:- That Miku figure is gorgeous, and I plan to get it sometime soon. ^_^

I mainly collect action figures, I love to pose them and play around with them, I also like to sometimes just stare at them for a long time, it makes me happy.
I love collecting both because the figures make me happy when I look at them and because of the figure collecting community. I love seeing people's reaction to new figures or talking about how excited they are for an announcement or pre-order. It's also really great when you find people who love a figure as much as you do.
I started just for fan of anime, and i wanted to reciprocate something to the anime industrie, but now is more i love to collect because each figure has some history of the character of the anime i like, for the good feels that take me back.
I basicly collect because they are super cute and it's fun to build up settings with Nendoroids. But mostly I love everything cute and it feels like you own a part of the anime you like.
for me, collecting is about surrounding yourself with something you love and make you feel happy! seeing my figure collection makes me feel happy similarly to how you have colourful figures, they add a positive atmosphere to my room. i also work very hard to save up money for my favourite figures, and seeing them on my shelf makes me feel fulfilled with work that payed off. I also enjoy it as a piece of art as they are mini sculptures and you can't deny the craftsmanship that goes into making beautiful figures!
Love this video! Collecting makes me happy, and I think it's different for everyone as well. It's fine when people decide to stop, but as long as you find something that makes you happy you have to go for it~

Talking to people about their passions/hobbies is my favorite thing it add like 3years to my life!

We are honestly really similar. I've also been collecting things my WHOLE life, starting with Powerpuff Girls toys and Pokémon figures and cards in kindergarten. I also feel like collecting helps the social aspects of my life. I'm very quiet and have a hard time talking in person, but I can really connect with someone over a love of collecting anime or Pokémon merchandise (or makeup ;) haha).
Plus anime figures are just so pleasing to look at.

Been collecting for 4 years now. It all started when I saw some of the figures that made my inner thought shout: Buy It!
The moment when it arrives it felt like I'm a happy kid just received his present from Santa and eager to open it. Looking at my collection gave me a sense of accomplishment and calms my mind.
My mother used to ask me the same question like what is the point of buying so much. I simply asked like: Do you have a hobby? Why do you like it so much? Answer that for me then you will know why I am doing the same for my hobby.
I collect because I like to see my favorite 2D anime characters in a 3D world (360 view) .. I know this might sound stupid but it's the truth
Great video! I think a lot of collectors do it for the same reasons you listed here, don't have too much to add. In my collection I want every piece to add something unique, like it's really silly, really cool, tough, monstrous, cute or old or rare etc. For instance I have a Drossel-figure but also some Xenomorphs, I have a transformers that's a dragon and another that's a bunny!
I buy anime figures to extend my enjoyment of series, characters and games i enjoyed, and to support the franchises. Looking at Kaori, Illya, Shiro and co makes me happy because I like their stories. I also very much enjoy the anticipation phase from pre ordering towards release and actually getting to unpack something I've waited many months for.
I'm still sorta rejecting (or trying to reject, as hard as I can) the whole "I collect because I collect" type thing.. by not buying figures from gigantic sets or casts (cough cough Love Live).
I started collecting cards of different animes in my childhood, when Internet didn't existed in my country. Now I collect figures of the series I loved in that time. They are so beautiful and make me smile everytime I look them.
I agree that you do distinguish yourself because of figure collectors, even other collectors. Because just like you said we all have different collections.
You can have similar tastes to others, but the decisions that you make for your collection will differ.
I collect because as you said, figures really are works of art. I love certain series and it just feels so wonderful to be able to have a quality, 3-D representation of characters from those shows in your room. It doesn't even need to be a character from a show, it can just be a design you really like.
And it is fun to have people comment on your figures and go, "Oh, this is so and so! I love that anime." Sometimes you get people who feel like it is a bit much (especially when you have a larger collection like mine), but that's not too bad. Just gotta show your pride in your collection.
I collect figures for the simple fact that i see them as a different form of art from a certain form of art (ART-CEPTION) and because i love a particular character from an anime, video game, etc. Your video nails on many points of how I feel about the figure-collecting hobby. By seeing other peoples collection (not just anime related or collecting in general) it shows the taste of what that person is into, which is nice. Seeing others reaction is a good amusement experience. Waiting anxiously for new releases to come. It can start topic discussions. Overall, its fun! Aint gonna lie about it~
I love collecting cool anime merchandise and it is fun to have a piece of something you enjoy.

alot of your reasonings you collect are the same as mine. I've always been a collector since I was young it just went from comic books over to anime lol! One big reason I think I continue to collect and it's part of the reason you were talking about how it made you feel, but nostalgia is a big reason why I collect. I have an extensive sailor Moon collection and love when figures from shows like rayearth and UTENA get announced because they were some of the earlier animes I saw and were very impactful in my love for anime and in my life in general. And in general I love collecting figures because it reminds me how a series or that particular character made me feel. I also have gotten more enjoyment out of seeing other collectors reactions to their figures such as you and nendonow where it's more about your reaction to the figure then just a review itself. So thank you for doing what your doing and making this hobby even more enjoyable for other collectors as well :)
Recently found your channel and I like how open and honest you were in this about your reasons for collecting figures. I just have a Saitama (OnePunch) figure to remind me every morning to work out and stay motivated! Maybe I will get others some day.

it's a lifestyle, I love collecting quality figures of my favorite characters. When I come home from a tiring day at work I look at my collection makes me feel great make me feel hype to do art. I never get tired looking at them. When I'm gone for months from deployment, when I go back home and rest in my room I feel home seeing my figures.
You are correct, the reason isn't just one thing. I collect Nendoroid because it serves as souvenir to the lore I find inspirational on an artistic level.
I have a huge Zelda figurine collection including a few other video games & anime figurines that I love and what made me the most interested in figurines/collecting is that I love the idea of a character in a video game or anime coming to life in 3D right on my own shelf. I tend to grow a huge love with characters from games & animes that having a figurine version of that character makes me so happy. I love character designs as well, for example I love beautiful clothing designs on these characters that are then sculpted perfectly onto a figurine. I seriously love to just admire the sculpt and detail on figures. It really is like an art. The only downside of collecting is that I get a bit of a high from it, where I feel the need to purchase everything or my collection won't be complete which can be a lil unhealthy mentally at times. It certainly is hard work just as you said and can get quite expensive, but overall collecting is definitely an overall hobby I've always enjoyed, I used to collect eyeshadow a ton just like you! :D
But yah my top reason is like you said, it's personalized decor. I consider it art - and as any art collector - you buy things that you enjoy visually and of course, gives an emotional response. Also, like fashion, its a means of self-expression.

Great video ❤. Subscribed. I collect toys, statues, and action figures from Marvel, Star Wars, DC, Sci-fi, Comics, Animes, etc. And the reason I collect them is simply because they're beautiful. I feel like I collect them because I'm an art collector. And it's an art piece that I have an emotional attachment to, so it's like double the satisfaction. And I like how my nerdy collection makes my home look more beautiful. That's why I display my collection out in the living room so everyone that comes to my home can immediately see it 😂. And I have to say, even if it's gonna sound silly to most, my figure collection contributed to my overall happiness in life right now. I never get bored looking at them 😍

Learn some 3d software before,its amazing to see them created from the process of 3D sculpting> Cut parts> Print> paint and assembly .

I concur with all the reasons mentioned. And yes, also that the reasons are changing. Sometimes I want my most beloved characters physical in my hands, then I want something to cheer me up, then something that is aesthetical right my thing, it's fluctuing.
I think it's really an interesting hobby. It shows yourself in it, your interests, your personality. No collector is the same. On my desk is an Asuka, Female Shepard, Amiibos, Nendoroids, four Star Trek Starships and a Fallout Boy Bubble Head. Even if all I would collect are Nendoroids, it would be so different from i.E. Dave rom "Nendo Now" and that's so cool. It's like with other people paintings on the wall. I also have a feeling that the figure collecting community is at the same time diverse as it's very open minded and friendly. Of course there are always hot topics but still, I feel very welcome in this community, even though people collect very different things. I think there is a great respect for the work and art involved, too.
So yeah, I say the community is another reason for figure collecting. It's so interesting to see what others have, share what you have, see what others do and share what you do. Even though the interests itself differ from each other.

I've always loved collecting since I was a kid when I used to collect gemstones and rocks from a magazine. Nowadays I just love to collect merchandise, figures included, and even my Dad has started to collect old action figures too. Personally though I love to collect figures of my favourite shows, movies and games. I always make sure each figure I get is of a character I love.

I started collecting things from when i was little. I started with "Gormiti" (little monsers figures), then i found Pokémon cards and also Yu-Gi-Oh, looking for the strongest cards, not to play with them, but just to have them in my hand. Then, from 3 years till now, i started watching anime and reading manga, and so i started collecting figures. I like collecting them of course because i've always been a collector, but also because some figures that represents a character from a manga/anime reminds me than manga/anime, that i appreciated. Also because most of them are colourful, and i love having a lot of colours in my room, it makes me fell positve, and also quiet. I don't know, but when i look at my showcase i smile, is a very good sensation :) Great video Jess!

My reason for collecting... Growing up I missed out on a lot of things. One of them being Transformers, never had a single one. But now that I'm older and I work I'm able to buy my own things. Collecting for me started around 19 and it wasn't until I turned 21 that I really got into it... and started working of course lol. I turn 27 this month and my collection has grown over the years. Every time I get something new I always love to share it with my friends. Just like you my parents, especially my dad (I feel ya) and relatives don't understand why I do this. It makes me happy, I can actually say this belongs to me, I worked hard to get it and when it comes to pre orders, I have to wait for it!! Months/Years if I have to. There's more to it but this is all I can say for now.

I personally started collecting figures as a nostalgia thing that brought back all those childhood memories.
Now I've drifted more into the Anime and otaku culture.
I always collected anime merch, but not so much figures. I did have some nendroids and 2 scales, but those were collected over a timespan of 3-4 years.
Since the pandemic, especially since december 2020, I watched this one anime figure roomtour video (I started watching room tours and from there I found these amazing anitubers with figure collection).
I was so impressed by their collection, the look of the room, the different figures these anitubers had. Instead of just collecting small knicknacks of anike merch and posters, I decided to decorate my room with anime (figures) too. I was always interested in them, but I always thought "you cant bring them outside" (even though I love being in my room anyways).
It's only from buying figure's these last couple years that I realised I've always been a collector of one thing or another, starting with The Beano, oh and Pogs lol. I collect figures because surrounding myself with characters that bring me joy makes me happier, pretty simple. I also collect comics and art prints. I don't have friends interested in this hobby but that won't stop me!

I found this video in my recommended and i feel like collecting figures is not just a joy, but what makes me,me! Like some figurines explain a part of my self, example, I went to Hawaii for the first time to meet my 6 year long distance boyfriend (and yes, I have skyped before that, no worries!) and we went to a shop and it had some used Vocaloid figures for about 15 dollars and thats when my boyfriend said I should start collecting. They sit next to my desk as a reminder of how much fun I had down there
I buy rare figures not only because I love them. I collect those kinds of figures because it gives a certain joy whenever I have something unique. Like limited edition, collector’s edition, etc. But the two most important factor in my collection is artistic value and the anime, manga, etc. that it came from. Collecting does impact my life both financially( in a bad way haha) and self satisfaction. Kudos to you!

I've started sculpting figures of my own too. And I already made a pretty cool looking Gyarados out of epoxie. I think, making toys would be a beloved hobby of mine. So yeah! That was very interesting to watch and learn what drives your interest in this - especially as i'm about to start collecting myself. Just recently found myself getting interested in anime, visual novels and such and i was abit surprised to find i'm really getting into it all.
So i'm basically starting from scratch sts and have just ordered my first 2 figures, starting off slow with 2 smaller, cheaper ones to see where i'll go from there. Naturally they are Sonico figures btw... ;)

I collect my figures because I think the designs are very eye catching. I like anime, manga and any kind of art. It's very relaxing to collect. I started with digimon cards.
I saw someone comment before saying "why would you spend that much on some plastic thing that sits there and does nothing" but it's something that I enjoy looking at, the same reason why anyone collects anything or buys decor. It's not necassary, all you need is a room and bed to sleep, yet we buy things to decorate because it helps us express ourselves.
The more expensive they are makes them have more value and gives me a proud feeling having it. The same reason why people collect shoes that they'll never wear, delecate plates they'll never use. It's a sense of owning something precious to you, that someonebody else may not own. It may seem like it "doesn't do anything" to someone, but for me it makes me happy, that is something ^-^

I am digging into this hobby, and it is quite interesting and nice, the figures are kinda pricey , but they look so beautiful on my shelf, and I cannot help to save as much as possible to buy them.
I started collecting figures because I have a habit of working hard to save money for my hobby. My last hobby was playing video games so whenever new games get released, I always save up money to get the collector's edition/deluxe editions of the games. But now that I don't have much time to play games, I started pulling the breaks every now and then whenever a new game comes out. And at that point, I wanted to have a hobby that I want to work hard to get it but does not require so much time to actually enjoy it. I still play videogames today but not as much as before. Eventually, I found out about Nendoroids and figure collecting and as I saw how great the community is, I decided to switch my hobby to figure collecting. It's fun and hard to decide which to ones I should preorder first but once you make a decision and your order finally arrives, I feel like a little kid filled with elation. I can also enjoy and admire my figures just by lying down on my bed as I rest after a rough day. :)

Hmm they just make me happy i guess? It really hard to express, but its the same as if someone bought a art statue made of clay or limestone or something, they bought it because they like it, looking at it makes them happy, in some way it expresses a part of themselves. When i look at my figures i often think about the heroics, love, friendships that those characters have and that brings me joy =)
I love collecting! I started collecting figures because my sister was in to it and showed me myfigurecollection.net and I just got so excited! I've always collected things in my life. as a kid I started to collect pins and smashed pennies. I now collect pins, smashed pennies, magnets (from places I've been to), plushies and figures. I love being able to collect things that link to a memory and I love collecting things from shows that I love!
I don't have any scale figures yet (I preordered both the Rem and Ram 1/7 scales), and I just got my first nendoroid, plus I preordered the Yuri on Ice nendos, but I collect fucko pops. I see my vinyl figures as small little pieces of art. It kinda sucks when some people don't understand that I find them appealing and that I love them

I'm in the second camp... oh my gawd you have a nice collection...
I guess because my tastes evolved during time ? Simple toys , action figures , transformers and finaly anime stuff like model kits and bit of figures wich fully satisfy my needs now and destroy free spaces each time when postman brings new box.

My reasons for collecting figures:
1.) I collect figures because to me it's fun to look for figures, think about how I can display them, research figure details, compare prices, and spend hours trying to find that perfect arrangement.
2.) I love anime, so the memorabilia which come with the figures are like taking a walk down memory lane
3.) It gives me something to do, other than play games and watch RUclips/anime all day every day.
4.) Everything I collect is mine, it goes into my collection which gives me a sense of satisfaction in a way (like my collection is one of a kind).
Overall, it's more so the process of finding a figure which is the enjoyable aspect of this hobby. Buying and displaying the figure is the "reward" for doing all of the things mentioned above and is something to show for my efforts to find said figure.

Hello there, Jess. I just got into collecting anime figures...yep...caught the fever. I've enjoyed anime for a long time and having the characters I've grown to love in a physical 3D environment is just an awesome way to pay homage to the talent that goes into creating these characters and stories. It's also a great way to support this very unique artistic style.
I've bought / pre-ordered 8 figures in the last two weeks....I think I may need psychological help! =p I'm looking seriously into getting some garage kits to piece together in order to create some figures that I want (but no one makes). So those will be one-of-a-kind which also appeals to my collecting nature.

I only have three anime figurines, Jiji (Kiki’s Delivery Service) and Ame and Yuki (Wolf Children). They’re very cheap but I like that they’re simple. Collecting is fun but I try not to do it as much anymore, I tend to go over board lol
Collecting and choosing characters based on feelings, emotions, I really like that and can relate to that. I have been thinking about it during your video and it is a hard thing to describe.
It's obvious sometimes to collect things you like because you enjoyed the show, game ect. It's like reliving those moments always with the figure, ect. But it's not always about that. I've just bought things I knew nothing about and I never looked back or regretted. Like someone really enjoying a piece of artwork. Noticing the details, it's fun.I guess that's why. And it never hurts when your spouse also collects. XD I often wonder if our kids will enjoy them like I do. Either that or when I die, they gonna get rich. shheze ~.~

I think my Overall-Reason why I collect figures could be something like: Because I love Anime and the characters, I guess...
However honestly it's not such an easy and plain answer at all...I've asked myself exactly this question quite a few times... Even though I don't have the collection you, or most "real" collectors have - I have currently about 700€ worth of figurines in my posession (About 23 Figures from Prize to Scale, Coin Grade, Nendos and Figmas) and it get's to grow somehow, month after month (I started collecting about a year ago)... Also I am quite old for an figure collector - not to say for an Anime fan...
However... back to the topic; I think I have quite a few "real" reasons: 1. It's as you said: a nice decoration - after all I am doing Anime RUclips so it makes for a nice background on videos where I am in front of the camera... 2. When I started - I bought figures pretty random - as long as they were cheap and I could make a video with them (kind of the same reason you mentioned with photography)... However - now I only buy figures which I really like - even pricey ones - some of them I don't even make a video of... 3. Wellp I guess it's also kind of visible which focus I have (9 Hatsune Miku Figures out the 23 xD) - so yeah that's that... I probably never will be that much into collecting, as maybe you are; however I like my little collection and am happy I started collecting - even if, maybe not for the "right reasons" (I just wanted to know why tf people spend that amount of money on small lumps of pvc - and as you can clearly see - I still don't really know why xD)...

I always loved anime since my childhood and l started with Sailor Moon ! I was always deep into the anime, and when l firstly started to draw some anime characters at highschool l decided to go to a Japanese university which as Anime/Manga department (Like Tokyo University). But economical reasons always limits the choices. I just kept watching anime and thats all and now l am collecting figures when l have money :D

How did i just discover your channel? this is awesomeness! i don't have a huge collection of figures, but i have a large game collection, i collect because its like a treasure hunt for me. i never buy games online, so every time i find a new game i get a rush of excitement.
