  • Tips for buying anime figures in Akihabara, Tokyo. How expensive are figures in Akihabara, and where to find the best shops.
    GET MY JAPAN TRAVEL GUIDEBOOK: www.cakeswithf...
    Anime figure shopping is always on my list of things to do in Tokyo. The best place to go is Akihabara (Akiba) which is otaku central! One of my favourite shops is Kotobukiya, and you can also get great prices on second hand figurines. Another place to go is Nakano Broadway, which is slightly cheaper, as well as Otome Road in Ikebukuro and Denden Town in Osaka.

    Man those prices are so cheap compared to Amiami or US retailers. I feel like I'd spend my entire savings if I went to Japan.

      I know right!! I just bought some figures (without boxes) at Hobby Off for 380 yen - can't believe how cheap they are. They would have been 20 times that much over here at comic con.

      Most Japanese online stores that ship internationally set their price on their international website to be around the same price of International retailers.
      If you want to be able to have the best deals on figures, you can rely on a proxy buyer to purchase the items for you on online stores that ship only in Japan for a fee. Depending of the proxy buyer, fees may range from $3 - $10 per purchases. So it is worth to look around the different proxy buyers, what services they offer and at what cost.
      Some might offer the possibility to store the items bought from different sellers for a certain period of time to combine them all together to be shipped at once, while others might ship each items individually the moment they acquire them for you. So it all depends on what kind of purchases you are planning to do (i.e.: single item purchase, or bulk purchases from different sellers).
      But when you consider you can get a Prize Figure (the type of figures shown in most part during this video) new for $10 - $20 plus shipping fees instead of $40 - $50 plus shipping fees, or a new Scale Figure for $120 plus shipping instead of $200 or more, those proxy buyer fees are definitely end up being worth it while saving money.

      The Crane games are programed nearly the same why they are in America. The grippers are only allowed to actually grip hard on prizes once every certain amount of tries. Here in American it's usually every 9 to 10 times.

    If you Go west corner of akihabara, there is a building where the figures are on bouncy balls. Those are extremely easy to win compared to the others and not many people go there since it is not on the main street!

  • @FiyahLiger
    @FiyahLiger 4 года назад +3

    The biggest things I learned while there was.
    1. Check multiple shops and all the floors. Theres a good chance you'll find the same figure at a better price.
    2. If you absolutely need/want it, but it! I lost a few items by letting it sit for an extra day when I came back the next day ;-;
    3. Check back daily if possible. Theres always new items for sale at the resale shops(like akiba culture zone)
    Thia video is amazing though, randomly ended up at Nakano myself as well and spent all day there browsing the place!

    You missed out the mention on the Mandarake Akihabara outlet, which has some rare figures that Nakano broadway does not have (Bare in mind they are the same chain).
    Also, Radio Kaiken has Yellow Submarine and Jungle Hobby stuff with alot of figures.
    Last but not least the Amiami stores both in Radio Kaiken and the 2nd hand outlet near Kotobukiya are a must-see!

      Also if you are planning to go beyond Osaka and further west (say...Fukuoka or Kokura), give Kokura a shot.

It does have some fanservice (very little compared to what we have nowadays) but the story gets very interesting, especially in the middle. The two main girls are so badass, as a young girl I really looked up to them since 13 years ago there were fewer anime with strong main female characters. Other ones were Slayers (magic) and Kaleido Star (acrobatics). And of course Sailor Moon.

      It can be tricky to know where to go when you go somewhere for the first time. When I first went to Ikebukuro I didn't like it at all because I went the wrong way and didn't find the good stuff, but I love it there now! Did you see my tour of Akihabara, that might help too! ruclips.net/video/InyEy0uDKiA/видео.html

      Absolutely! Most of the figures I buy are prize figures (originally prizes in the UFO catchers) and for me they're everything I want in a figure at a great price. When the same figures are sold here in the UK, the price is usually 3x as much.

      Are the train noise as bad people say it is when u stay at the hotel in akihabara? What's the most popular male figure name in Japan? I'd love to buy female figures but my family would think that's strange for a male to collect 🙄. Lol!

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  7 лет назад +2

      Akiharaba's on a major train line so check reviews and see how close hotels are to the tracks. I haven't stayed there; I prefer the other side of Tokyo for staying in (Shinjuku/Shibuya area). I think you should collect whichever figures you like! :-) What's popular changes seasonally - I often find we're behind Japan in terms of what's popular (It takes a while to come over here!). When I was there, I saw lots of the guys from Haikyuu (basketball anime).

      The cabinets are all numbered. Some shops have slips of paper to write the number of the cabinet on. At others, you take the shop assistant to the cabinet you want - you'll be able to get by with mime and pointing if you learn basic "sumimasen" (excuse me), "please" and "thank you". Have a great trip!! :-)

      In Japan I've not seen them in the shops that much, more as UFO catcher prizes. There've been a couple in the shops that sell figures etc in glass cabinets in Akihabara. I think Amuse plushies are easier to get in the UK than in Japan if you want to buy them eg from Tofu Cute!

    Great video, very much good quality information given! Looking in Akihabaras backalleys or in the smaller not with super bright neon lights flooded entrances can be very rewarding. Smaller shops often have the better prices. We visited Nakano Broadway in the last year for the first time and we were positively suprised. Everything there looks old and not so "fresh" in comparison with Akihabara but you can still find hidden gems and very exclusive figures for an awesome price. If you ever visit Nagoya (its in the middle between Osaka and Tokyo) you can go to the Osu shopping mall there you find some cool figure shops too or try the "Bookoff Megabazar" store in the inner city. Their prices are incredible low even if the figure selection is mainly from the last 5-8 years. There I found a huuuge Final Fantasy plush Moogle (new) for less than 5€ and a lot of cheap Super Famicom games.

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, Nakano Broadway's definitely worth a look! And you'll certainly see some interesting things there! I've not been to Nagoya yet, but I'm gradually finding out about these other places to find figures in different areas of Japan, like Aru Aru City in Kitakyushu, and I recently went to DenDen Town in Osaka (video coming up at some point!) :-)

    In my experience, to get better prices on figures while in Akihabara you need to branch out to the shops away from the main streets. Also, the shops away from the main streets will usually have a mix of older figures that you may not be able to find anymore as well.

    Tez, if painting ever stops doing it for you a spot as a Taiko Drummer might work. 😁 Great vid. Japan does have some contrasts in scenery. All said, I think I prefer the gardens to the gaming. Happy exploring, Mate.

      How exciting! You'll love it! I have some other videos about Akihabara that you might enjoy - and Nakano Broadway, which is a good place for figures too. :-)

    That neighborhood cleaned out my wallet. I got more than a few plastic modeling kits as well as a golden dragon figure.
    There is a department store next to Akihabara Station with a lot of those plastic modeling kits. I like building military and airplane models. Those model trains were tempting too.

      Ah was that department store Yodobashi Camera? Can’t believe how big that shop is! My friend bought some Gundam kits there, he said it’s a good place to get them with reasonable prices.

    I've recently been in Japan and I've visited Kyoto, Kitakyushu (Kokura) and Tokyo - in Kokura I've found an entire anime-related shopping mall called Aru Aru City - it was unbelievable! Prices were really great, there were a lot of affordable figures (my all-time love). For me, Akihabara was a "little" more overwhelming, I felt a little lost there - also the prices were higher (but if someone knew how to search for cheaper things - there were such as well).

      SyrisDarkness Ah I’ve heard of Aru Aru City! Just been in Kyushu this week actually (back in Japan right now!) - it wasn’t on my list as I went to Den Den Town and Akihabara, but it sounds great from what you said!! :-)

    I'm Going to tokyo next week so I'll visit akihabara for sure. Thanks for this video. I hope that as second hand figures, maybe I'll find them with box included since I'll get some for some friends

      @cakeswithfaces  5 лет назад +1

      The prize figures usually come with boxes too, and they're around 1200-1500 yen when you buy them from the shops. Have a great trip!

    I loved figure shopping at Akihabara! I bought second hand figures and they were soooo cheap like $5 each. And every time my girlfriend visits me from Tokyo, she always brings me figure!
