Thank you for this video. I scrolled through a ten of web articles and none of them just explained how to connect to my local computer (to my local server on that computer) from the internet. I had to gather from bits and pieces and realise myself what port forwarding does. This video is the first source of information that actually explains why and how. You'd think there'd be 1000s of articles explaining this basic information for newcomers like me.
Read this during intro got me thinking this was gunna be straight forward professional talk but then 2 second later he starts bumping and dancing ugly sweater time
Richard Keith I was being rhetorical but to be honest, no one should go near port-settings if they do not know what they are doing, even for video games.
Using dynamic DNS doesn't really hide anything, as all it does is map a certain domain name to your IP address, which is the entire point of DNS to begin with. Not to hide the IP address, but to give it a name it can be accessed from.
It's "security through obscurity". If you hand out you put your IP address out there, you're more likely to be the target of attacks as opposed to using a domain name service. Can people find it if they want to? Sure. But they'd have to know it's locally hosted first...and that's harder to do if you have a DNS. At least that's how I look at it.
Actually, and with respect to your efforts and videos that I like, the term of router given to the device that connects networks (LANs) together, and the one we have home is a switch+router, it connects the local devices together (switch) and give them access to Internet (router part).
This is the only tutorial that actually made sense. Other tutorials just pour a ton of bullshit in halfway through. If I'm setting up a game server though, from what port should I forward? I know the port I have to forward to but not where from
I enjoyed watching this video not because of the content, but also he sounded funny and looks like a clown. I think i wouldn´t ever miss his class if he were my Teacher. By the way the sound at the background also didn´t affect the video at all. It made it interesting. Good work bro.
Local area network does not necessarily need a router to communicate . If there two or more LAN within your network, then you would need a router to communicate between the different LANs.
@Tinkernut Ever notice the web seems inordinately populated by grouchy demanding self righteous people. Thank you for your humor and tinkery tinkering videos. Merry Christmass.
Definitely a quirky character but I love it haha, you break this down very well, the only question I have is when you say to change the port to a more obscure number, can it be any port? Or would it have to be specific like 443?
I learned how to port forward for minecraft. Now I'm a network engineer and Linux SysAdmin. Funny how setting up something as simple as a Minecraft or a self hosted blog can lead to such a great career. Nice video and btw Unix is dead and GNU/Linux took its place (for the most part) and now in 2019 the ifconfig has been replaced with the ip a command
Andrew I had a question, since you did video game stuff I’d assume you have a good amount of experience. I’m having problems with the uplay app and the support guys told me to port forward some TCPs or something that they recommend and I’m a little confused. If you could briefly explain the process it would really help, I watched this video fully but I want to 100% know I’m not gonna fuck anything up even worse.
Andrew, I need some help as well. I am confused why it says either "Your connection is not private" or "This site can’t be reached The connection was reset.", when I am trying to connect to my Default gateway. I am sure I haven't done anything wrong I have been trying to do this for about an hour. I know it is a bit random to ask you 4 years after your post, but as you are a professional I thought you might know how to fix this.
Great vid man 😀 one thing I would make clear is that your Wan IP is the same for all devices inside your Lan, since everything passes through the router and is then redistributed. Great job otherwise!
People can easily get your IP ethier if you are using this website for subdomain or domain. Like, the only thing that you need to do for getting someone's IP from the subdomain he created is just entering this simple command in Windows Command Prompt (cmd but not just cmd): ping (the domain name) and then it will get the IP address so easily, and it will output it in the cmd console window.
I am confused why it says either "Your connection is not private" or "This site can’t be reached The connection was reset.", when I am trying to connect to my Default gateway. I am sure I haven't done anything wrong I have been trying to do this for about an hour. I NEED HELP!!!
Is this applicable for users with Dynamic IP address on their ISP? Since everytime we turned off the modem for about 15 minutes it would change the public IP address.
love how you failed at the DNS site human test HAHA, i failed soooo many times!! Thank you so much for making this video, I have watched it many times, and i feel that each time i watch it I am understanding things better. I have a question though, when we key in our public ip address to create a DNS, doesnt that mean that there is a server somewhere out there that has a record of my public IP? isnt' that unsafe?
When you go onto a website. That ultimately gives people your ip. Like another comment said people can just ping your domain for it. I can't really answer your question fully sorry.
It is incredibly easy to get anyone's up address. In fact there might be someone scraping this video right now for all of your ips, so I don't think the whole domain name thing is as absolutely necessary as he makes it out to be.
You don't hide the IP address with a domain name. You simply issue a ping command or tracert command to expose the IP address. But no mistake, cool video. Thanks.
i am trying to setup a live stream of my barn and i think my router and the port forwarding and DNS are getting in the way. A old friend set this all up at one time. The camera says to do this. Main Stream: rtsp://admin:password@ip_address:554//h264Preview_01_main It's not working :-/
But what if my ISP changes my public IP? As far as I know my ISP doesn't assign static public IP to its clients. Registering it a domain name would be pointless if the IP is replaced on a regular basis.
Technically, any open ports are a security concern. You should shut it down when not in use - in case anyone got a hold of your private IP, the port, or both.
Many thanks, that was helpful. Port forwarding and DDNS worked the first time. It took about 15 minutes for DNS records to update before I could use the domain name. I did configure port forwarding to use the same port, but should change the internal port. I understand that I can, generally use any port but is there a specific range of ports to use or should not be used?
Your IP address is still not hidden even if you have a domain name mapped to an IP address, because you can query a domain name for lookup using nslookup command on windows and dig on Linux.
I really need some questions answered about some logs I found on my router interface. There is port mapping created and I noticed the IP address was my phone. I didn't do this. Is this something I should be concerned about? My husband and I are getting a divorce and im worried that he is trying to gain access to my phone. Is this a possibility with port mapping?
Please do a video about firewall VIP and MIP and all that other weird things. Or are those just Juniper specific terms? I mean i could google it.. but i like this video style and Im a visual learner (a)
This video has been amazingly helpful for me. Thank you for posting it. However, I may be doing something wrong with the last step. Is there some way I can include the port with my IP address on the Subdomains website? Whenever I try, it simply says "Invalid IP Address." Without the port, I can't access my website (nor can my friends whom I give the address to.) They can access the site with the IP Address itself, so I know that everything else is working just fine.
So to put it simply, if I don't port forward only people in the same Wi-Fi connection can access my servers but if I port forward everyone can. Correct?
can anyone help me about this, i set up MC server and i already made the portforward (25565). but when i connect by the public IP address : port, it wont connect. i tried using portchecker on internet but it says the port 25565 is closed? how do i open it? i set up the start and end 25565. which ip address to host the portforward? the ipv4 server?
Boss, how to port forwarding for this setup? Isp modem zte f670L -- dlink router -- switch -- NaS server With plex server Still cannot figure out to access externally the NAS. Thanks
port forwarding not working for me though..tried to follow your steps but it says "connection time out" when I try to access my public ip from my phone network while locally it is working fine. how can I fix this? please help!

Lol good points. You probably don't want to expose your home network.
