Unfortunately the United States has got terrible taste in music. And the band wasn’t as big here as it should’ve been just like so many other English bands.
"Red Red Wine" is a song originally written, performed, and recorded by American singer Neil Diamond in 1967. It is included on Diamond's second studio album, Just for You. The lyrics are sung from the perspective of a person who finds that drinking red wine is the only way to forget his woes. UB40 recorded a cover version in 1983 that went to #1 in the UK and was moderately successful in the United States; it was re-released in 1988 and went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. When Diamond left the Bang Records label in 1968, the label continued to release Diamond's singles, often adding newly recorded instruments and background vocals to album tracks from Bang's two Diamond albums. For the "Red Red Wine" single, Bang added a background choir without Diamond's involvement or permission. Diamond's version reached #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968. A live version was released on Diamond's The Greatest Hits (1966-92), but the 1968 single version has never been issued on a vinyl album or CD. Several artists covered the song shortly after Diamond's recording was released: In 1968, Dutch singer Peter Tetteroo (from the band Tee-Set) had a hit with a version that reached #6 on the Dutch Top 40 chart. Jamaican-born singer Tony Tribe recorded a reggae version of the song in 1969 that reached #46 on the UK Singles Chart. It became Trojan Records' first chart hit. UB40 recorded their version of "Red Red Wine" for their album of cover versions, Labour of Love. According to UB40 member Astro, the group's former vocalist and trumpet player, the band were only familiar with Tony Tribe's version and did not realize that the writer and original singer was Neil Diamond. Astro told the Financial Times, "Even when we saw the writing credit which said 'N Diamond,' we thought it was a Jamaican artist called Negus Diamond." UB40's version features a lighter, reggae-style flavor compared to that of Diamond's somber, acoustic ballad. The UB40 version adds a toasted verse by Astro, opening: "Red Red Wine, you make me feel so fine/You keep me rocking all of the time," which was edited from the single that reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart in August 1983 and #34 in the United States in March 1984. In 1988, UB40 performed the song at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Concert. Soon after in June 1988, Guy Zapoleon, program director of KZZP in the Phoenix, Arizona market, believed that the song should be given a second chance and put the full version, including Astro's "rap", on the station's playlist and it soon became the station's most popular song. With UB40 ready to release Labour of Love II, Virgin Records promotion man Charlie Minor asked UB40 to hold off on releasing the album so that the label could reissue and promote "Red Red Wine". On the Billboard Hot 100 chart of 15 October 1988 the song hit #1 in the U.S. In September 2014, the Official Charts Company announced that sales in the UK had reached one million. The song reached No. 1 on the South African Springbok charts in February 1984, remaining in that position for a total of 12 weeks. It also ended in the No. 1 position on that country's year end charts. Neil Diamond has stated that UB40's "Red Red Wine" is among his favorite covers of his songs. He frequently performs the song live using the UB40 reggae arrangement rather than that of the original version.

UB40 was a reggae and pop band that was popular during the Mod/Ska era in British music. They formed in 1978. Reggae had, and still has, a big influence on British music.
LOVE the Specials! If u love reggae, u should check out these: “Rudy, A Message to You” by Dandy Livingstone “Substitute Lover” by Half Pint “Ship is Sailing” by Jimmy Cliff
Dandy Livingstone's "Rudy" is Ska. Ska later spawned two other music genres: Reggae and Rocksteady. Most all of the early Reggae artists started with Ska (Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley, etc.). While Ska never really had the spotlight that Reggae had, it is still going and is still on it's third "wave". Modern artists include the Melbourne Ska Orchestra (somewhere between first wave and two-tone ska) and the Interrupters (third wave style). If you want more old-school Ska, check out Prince Buster and Desmond Decker and the Aces. Cheers!

Sorry to say this, but Bob Marley did not sign this song it was written by NEIL DIAMOND - Red Red Wine (Original 1968). I looked for the Bob Marley version, it's actually the UB40 version attributed to Bob Marley.
Thee number one song in the world in my opinion for 15 years it was my number one. I remember the first time I heard it. I was driving truck and I went and bought me a CD and I would replay it all day long and to this day it is my favorite number one
Next: "If It Happens Again" & "Rat in the Kitchen" BTW, band name is taken from an "Unemployment Benefit Form 40" in England. Just looked it up on Google.
Some of UB40s biggest hits were covers of other people's songs, (Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe, Kingston Town Can't Help Falling In Love) but they did their own material, too. My favourite in One In Ten which is about the plight of unemployed people in recession-hit Britain in the 1970s/80s. When the band formed they were all unemployed, hence the name UB40 - the name of the form you had to fill in to register for unemployment benefit.
I haven't heard many of UB40's songs, but all of the ones I have heard were covers. They've covered The Way You Do the Things You Do and Can't Help Falling in Love With You.

Not everything Reagga is from Bob Marley. And no, you do not remember Bob Marley's Version - he never sang this. But in fairness, all over RUclips and elsewhere, this is labeled a BM Song.
I've been to a lot of concerts and festivals over the decades. I've never experienced anything near the collective happy groove that was the UB40 concert. The crowd was dancing, the ushers were dancing, the roadies were dancing, security gave up and danced, the food people were dancing, people had their arms around each other's shoulders, I looked behind me and the entire venue was dancing together, the squints and humheads were vibing, and I looked at the lady next to me and we realized we were doing the same moves in sync (and she looked fourteen months pregnant, so I was a bit nervous for her). I've never had an experience even close to that in my life. It was truly amazing. There's over 550 comments as I write this, so I'm sure everyone is explaining who they are, and the fusion that led to them and others. I just wanted to share that incredible, happy night.
Sorry, sounds nothing like Bob Marley. Can’t believe you don’t know UB40. Classic band that’s still going. And check out the original version by Neil Diamond. Not Bob Marley.
This song was from the album labor of love. The album was UB40 s tribute to reggae songs they heard growing up in England. Many of these reggae songs were covers of original hits in America. Red Red Wine was a Neil Diamond original covered by Tony Tribe in 1967.

Neil Diamond's version from his live double album Hot August Night is absolute fire. It's a slow, sad, passionate song, and the one I knew long before UB40 came out with their take on it
Agree
“Version”? Neil Diamond WROTE THE SONG!!
They appeared live in Clearwater, Florida last night. Just as powerful as the day this video was made. Great sound.
I absolutely loved being able to live during MTV. The videos have become part of the music ever since !!!
In 1981 I was 17. It was on in the rec room my entire duration of military service.
Oh, yeah, I rode a crotch rocket and wore a flight suit before Tom Cruise did in Top Gun also.... best time of my life.
Kingston Town is another great one by UB40🥰🥰🥰🥰
That's a classic. Before it was ripped of by Paris Hilton.
@@muzallisam5068 YIKES!
One of the best from the UK, been listening to them from late 70/80s
Jamel,
"Red, Red Wine" is a song written and performed by Neil Diamond in 1968. Tony Tribe covered the song in 1969 in a reggae-influenced style, and UB40 covered the song in 1983 in a lighter reggae-style. Although Bob Marley never covered the song, the reggae cover versions have often been incorrectly attributed to him.
Ub40 were in the charts in England slot in the 80s and 90s the best band ever!
"They got a lot of Reggae songs?"'
...Honestly dude, you don't know the half of it!
You could probably have a music reaction channel just dedicated to UB40 reggae songs and still have months worth of new content.
I saw them when they opened for Duran Duran in Dallas. They were okay. Duran Duran was so good. Loved every Minute DD was on stage.
They’re actually Brits. They can sound Reggae if they want to.
UB40 has some solid jams ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 Peace and love to all u Sisters and Brothers out there keeping the music alive 🙏🏼
UB40 is the name of an Unemployment Benefits form in the UK.
UB40 was a reggae and pop band that was popular during the Mod/Ska era in British music. They formed in 1978. Reggae had, and still has, a big influence on British music.
Check out The Specials Ghost Town
LOVE the Specials! 'Gangsters' is my favorite though:
ruclips.net/video/lgCZN1rU5co/видео.html
Can't fight corruption with con tricks
they use the law to commit crime
I dread to think what the future will bring
when we're living in real gangster time
And yeah, we really did skank to the Two-Tone catalog back in the day :D
love ub40, no most aren't covers, enjoy exploring their back catelogue
This song was a written by Neil diamond believe it or not! Bob Marley never covered it.
Bob Marley did cover this song, it one of his most popular songs
@@doobiedave9686 no he never did.
I looove this UB40 song. One of my favourites in my youngster time. We had really goood partys grooving on this song 😁😁😁
His dad came and got him back home........even though dad can be an ass; he is still Dad.
"who is UB40?"...CRYING!!! you gotta do more. They're amazing! Even better live!!!
If u love reggae, u should check out these:
“Rudy, A Message to You” by Dandy Livingstone
“Substitute Lover” by Half Pint
“Ship is Sailing” by Jimmy Cliff
Night Nurse and Sheila by Gregory Isaacs
Cheers!
Loved UB40. Brings back memories.
Good evening Jamel this is a good song let's do this✌❤❤💃💃
My mom would put on the best of UB40 all the time! Still loves listening to them. Good times
The song was recorded by the reggae singer Tony Tribe in 1969. I don't think Bob Marley ever actually covered it.
Love this song~ UB40~ RED~ RED ~Wine~ Reggae 🥰
Looks like a Friday night at the local pub, after everyone's gotten their pay. Our poor friend gets his pocket picked, and then his father and the dogs find him and take him safely home. All's well that ends well. Hopefully he found another nice lady.
What's great about them is they had not just one lead singer, but a variety of guys that could sing lead or rap to great effect.
Arlo Guthrie/ City Of New Orleans
Ted Nugent: Fred Bear the Song
Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant
"So the judge wasn't gonna look at the glossy photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explanin' what each one was to be used as evidence against us" what a classic!
@@sirgalahad5208 Whoever heard of a dump that was CLOSED?
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant (Exceptin' Alice)
Took my then (now wife) girlfriend to see Tina Turner way back in 1987. UB40 opened. I was more of a metal head but Tina rocked the place. Always think of that concert when I hear this song.
Isn't there a more extended version? I could have sworn there was more to it.
Yes with a rap ending. Red red wine you make me feel so fine feel so fine all of the time, etc. Lol
Yeah I agree @Michael Bickel, this version is missing some verses.
Lets all applaud Birmingham, UK for giving these guys to us. Listened to UB40 as a child and still go back to it when I really need to turn things up.
Jamal, I recommend you hear Neil Diamond's version and many of his other hits.
They are a full on reggae & ska band from the 80’s with original songs too! One of the best! 😍
Sorry to say this, but Bob Marley did not sign this song it was written by NEIL DIAMOND - Red Red Wine (Original 1968). I looked for the Bob Marley version, it's actually the UB40 version attributed to Bob Marley.
Damn it's been years since I last heard this song. Takes me back
Yep, sophomore year of college, 1988. Those were the days.
Please please please react to UB40's falling in love with you. Excellent song!
Loved UB40 growing up and have this song and others .
Big misconception, many people believe this to be a Marley song
Neil Diamond wrote it but Marley did do a cover of it.
@@doobiedave9686 No, he didn't. Tony Tribe did, not Marley.
@@doobiedave9686 Nope, sorry he never did. In fact, Bob Marley died 2 years before this came out, so it's actually impossible lol.
@@skinnybuddha74 The Tony Tribe version which a lot of people confuse with Marley came out before his death. The UB40 version though, certainly
@@skinnybuddha74 And the Neil Diamond version is from 1967.
I grew up on ub40 through the 80s and 90s. They are definitely legit.
UB40 was predominantly a Rocksteady band. Listen to "One in Ten".
Thee number one song in the world in my opinion for 15 years it was my number one. I remember the first time I heard it. I was driving truck and I went and bought me a CD and I would replay it all day long and to this day it is my favorite number one
Next: "If It Happens Again" & "Rat in the Kitchen"
BTW, band name is taken from an "Unemployment Benefit Form 40" in England. Just looked it up on Google.
Rat in the kitchen ❤
If it happens again, I'm leaving. I'm packing my things and gone!
@@jenwendy7 Rat in the Kitchen is awesome album
Some of UB40s biggest hits were covers of other people's songs, (Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe, Kingston Town Can't Help Falling In Love) but they did their own material, too.
My favourite in One In Ten which is about the plight of unemployed people in recession-hit Britain in the 1970s/80s. When the band formed they were all unemployed, hence the name UB40 - the name of the form you had to fill in to register for unemployment benefit.
UB40 is a reggae band, but most of their biggest hits were covers, starting with this song.
I haven't heard many of UB40's songs, but all of the ones I have heard were covers. They've covered The Way You Do the Things You Do and Can't Help Falling in Love With You.
REQUEST. The best version of this song is the one with the rap in it. Can you do a reaction to that one. That’s the better one in my opinion.
Yesss! I commented the same thing! Whomever’s getting their requests done...should specify the FULL versions- same with Soft Cell “Tainted Love/ where did our love go.” I can hardly watch when they’re cut short- I do though, to support the channel🤷🏼♀️
It’s a “toasting” not a rap sorry
I was waiting for it and his reaction to it so disappointed!!
Dude, nostalgia of when my sister was with me. We loved ub 40. Rip sissy lala.
bob marley didnt do this song, marley singing about smokin weed not booze!
You’re the best! I can always come to your channel and hear all my favorites! & you watch you enjoy them thoroughly, I love it❤️
Not familiar with a Bob Marley version of "Red Red Wine" - the original is Neil Diamond.
Reaching deeeep into the 80s! This song was everywhere for a little while. Love hearing it come out again, dust her off, and spin. As always, thanks Jamel for bringing back the memories.
Exactly Bob has a Jamaican accent these guys don't.
This song was from the album labor of love. The album was UB40 s tribute to reggae songs they heard growing up in England. Many of these reggae songs were covers of original hits in America. Red Red Wine was a Neil Diamond original covered by Tony Tribe in 1967.
