Daryl, great video! Since I'm an engineer I did the math. The long burning is $0.86 per lb and the original is $0.60 per lb. A big difference itself, nearly 50% more per lb. But wait, there's more....if you assume you burn 25% more (by weight) of the original to equal the long burn, it will still cost you more to use the long burn, 15% more $. And as you mentioned, they run the sale often on the original and probably won't run a two-fer sale on the long burn. Thanks for testing this.
Long burn would be use full when trying to cook something low and slow. Might be worth the extra investment if it means not going through the trouble of adding more brisquettes and keeping a consistent temp.
That was a great test Daryl and very informative. Thanks brother!
T-ROY COOKS you right
I have noticed the longburn temp does not fluctuate much. It stays very consistent. like it for longer cooks.
This was Great!
I love how technical you were about the variables involved (e.g. spacing, airflow, etc.)
Honestly I agree.
A penny saved is a penny earned.
Thank you for doing this comparison of the two charcoals. Greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much. That answered a lot of questions. Great video, great experiment.
Who Dat!
that was an in depth review. great information
I appreciate the work you put in on this video. It was both informative and well done. It seems the long burn coal does have value and isn’t just a different bag. I think I may try some on my next long sesh.
Great video! Definitely not the best deal but I could see using the long burn charcoal for an overnight cook when u want to be sure you do not run out of fuel.
No doubt, it would give you some extra burn time on those long cooks
Great video ...................the exact information I was looking for. Thank you Daryl.
Daryl, that was fantastic information. thank you for putting forth the effort to create his video. You have answered questions that I had in my mind. Although I use lump charcoal for smoking, I do use Kingford for barbecue. I'm not sure if the price will outweigh the volume . I will have to use it in a cook to make my final decision . This was an amazing video and an outstanding topic!
Good comparison thank you
Great video man I love the detailed comparison
Good video! Thanks for the comparison.
Exactly the video I was looking for, thank you.
Interesting comparison. It would be good to know if the original burns hotter than the long burn? If it does then presumably the extended time would be balanced out by closing down the dampers more on the original to achieve the desired temp?
Geat video! I just got an old water smoker and tried charcoal and smoking fornthe first time last weekend. I used kingsford original and smoked a 9 pound chicken for 6 hours. It didn't quite get hot enough so I finished it off in the grill. I'm hooked and am going to try a brisket next. I was looking at getting the long burn but I think I'll skip it. Appreciate the time you put in and thanks for sharing!
Great review my brother...
Thanks Ray, I was curious about this one, so I figured might as well share the results.....
Thank you Beast! Always will love my Kingsford charcoal!!!!
Good video Daryl! I use in my ceramic grill a lil bit of lump to get it started, then add my Kingsford charcoal briquets on top!
I first watched this video some time ago when I first saw the long-burning charcoal in stores. I use the original all the time, and I've always been happy with it. I just recently got me a new Weber grill, and so far, I love it! The first thing I cooked on it was a steak using the original, and just last night, I did some baby-back ribs with the long-burning, and they worked great! So, after watching your video, as well as judging from my own experience, I think I'll be using the Kingsford original charcoal for regular grilling, such as steaks, burgers, and boneless chicken, and the long-burning for smoking foods that take longer, such as ribs and whole chickens as well as competition. Thanks a million! Oh, and BTW, there's a commercial here on RUclips for the long-burning charcoal, and it says at the bottom of the screen in small letters that the burn-time is compared to the original. Thought you'd like to know!
Thanks, appreciate it. When I checked the Kingsford website, it did not say what it was compared too. I don't know, maybe I will try it again, but I don't see any significant difference in time, at least not enough to pay the difference in price. I could be just cheap...LOL, but I have like 20 bags of original I bought at a Walmart sale so it will be a while before I get some Long burn again, hey thanks a lot for the feedback and comments, I love it when I can engage my subscribers in BBQ talk. Take care and thanks again!
Great in depth review..very good job Daryl. I will be getting this charcoal from now on!
Long burning takes a miracle to light.
Good job Daryl! Well thought out for the whole review. I've seen a couple of other reviews that have ultimately came to the same conclusion...
But no one else I've seen/read about has pointed out that it says on the bag *_"*compared to other brands of charcoal"_* ... THAT was a very good observation, as most would assume that it was a comparison to original Kingsford , like you did at first, and most folks would "assume" that. but YOU read the bag! ... also given the plain ol' Kingsford can be had at a bargain price when on sale several times a year... Cheers to ya!
Great video! Keep up the good work
This was great. Thank you very much for making this video.
Old video, and I haven't seen the long burn stuff in the store recently, but I'm curious how this would compare to Kingsford from before the mid-2000s reformulation. Maybe this is the older formula with a different name? Hmmmm...
I loved this video
Outstanding video Daryl..... A lot of good information...... great product review
Great comparison video Daryl!
This may be a first, there was smoke, fire and but no BBQ! 😜
Look forward to the Minion Method test on the WSM.
Cold blooded review... thx for taking the time
that was an awesome review of charcoal you're helping us save money and same time. thank you so much for all your hard work on this video. Can you come hang out with you and your family one day. thanks for all your hard work and design my BBQ logo
Thanks! This was super informative. I appreciate your methodical approach.
Outstanding review. I'm using the competition ones now and I very much like them as they don't have that chemical taste to the food I find sometimes with regular Kingsford.
Thank you for doing this test. Very helpful
Very cool side by side burn down Daryl.
Recently been seeing the Long Burn on the shelves but did not know if it would be any good. Sure seems that on a long cook, say in a WSM it might be beneficial, longer time and less ash.
Great video.
Which one tastes better?
To me, I like the taste of the Kingsford Original over the Long Burn, but it could be because that's what I use all the time. Thanks for watching.
I have no problem using Kingsford blue, ya it ashes up like crazy, but it's hard to beat 40lbs for $10 during Memorial Day sales every year. I'm about to stock up soon!
HI Daryl-
Very cool that you made this vid- thanks! My first thought is, if you crunch the numbers, the Long-Burning 11.1 lb. bag is supposed to burn 25% longer, costing $.82 more than the Original 15.1lb. bag. The problem I see is that if you just use 25% more of the Original, you would only consume 13.875 lbs of Original compared to the 11.1 lbs of Long-Lasting. This means that if you use the Long-Lasting you would need more of it than the 15.1 lbs that comes in a cheaper bag. The denseness of the individual briquettes doesn't matter; the total amount of fuel that you get vs. the total amount of heat is what matters.
Second, I am wondering if there was a difference in the intensity of the heat coming off of each pile. I know that this is not a very easy thing to measure in our 'labs'. I do know that I know exactly how to use the Original, so why change coal (if it ain't broken.....)
Maybe the concept of a longer burning coal would become important when doing an overnight cook and you want to not have to bother the fire but only 25% longer a cook? Doesn't seem to be much better. Now, IF the Long Burn was significantly longer burning (like 60-70% longer,) then it might be better for the pit master as he could get a longer break between visiting the grill. Nonetheless, 25% is just beyond slightly better in longevity.
To conclude, I cannot see how the Original is like a better deal. I know that we could fill the Super Dome with folks with more knowledge and wisdom than me, I will not be trying the Long-Burning until it becomes a better value.
Just My Two Cents,
Bob
*"To conclude, I cannot see how the Original is like a better deal." should read: I cannot see how the Long-Lasting is a better deal."
Nice proofreading Bob!
No doubt Bob, I agree....I can say that just from the hand test over the coals, the long-burning coals seemed hotter than the original, however I wonder if that would cause temp control problems. I use the original all the time and have my temps down to a science. The long burn maybe better for overnight cooks, guess I won't know until I put it to the test of actually cooking with it. I just think I will stick with the Original unless the long burn goes on sale like the original does, two bags for $8.00 at certain times of the year. Thanks for commenting and watching, great insight!
I understood what you meant...LOL no problem
Good job sir!!!
Good review and test. You explain things really well too@
che esta re buena la version long-burning del carbon, dura bastante! buen dato :)
A nice product review sir...very informative. Thank you so much.
Great video! As a long time user of Kingsford Original, I tried the long burn product. My wife and I are convinced there is a loss in smoke flavor and have gone back to the original with good results. Any way to test this Daryl?
thank you for this video Darryl. I was wondering if this new charcoal would be worth the money or not and your video has answered my question. for the price difference, original is just hard to beat! Cheers to ya
Thanks Rusty, I could not agree more, I could only see buying this one maybe for a competition, other than that I will stick to the Original myself
Excellent video. Have you performed your next comparison you suggested at the end of your video?
Not yet... thanks for watching...
Good points. I'm glad I saw this before I purchased!
Can you do a review on the Dollar General brand charcoal?
Great review Bad Beast. Very informative. I see your SU helmet in the background. Were you on the bluff? I was there from 89-94. Jag for life!
Thanks for watching, no I did not go to SU, but was born and raised in Baton Rouge. I went to many Southern games and events over the years. I went to LSU for 2 years, it was 5 minutes from my house...lol, but I have to support the HBCUs.
Nice. My family on my moms side are from down in Saint Gabriel. Love my time down in Baton Rouge. Keep on cooking my friend
Good review. It seems like Kingsford briquets have steadily gotten worse over the years. Any brands you consider "longer lasting?"
Thorough 👍
I still think I will give the LB a try next time based on this vid. You should have continued the test to where the each was at the end ramping down on heat to compare overall time, because you know that subjective point where it is fully ash, and checking out.
Let me know what you think when you use it, thanks for commenting and watching.
Bruh, when jesus split the sea, I didn't think he meant see as in your eyes. No, just bustin' your balls bud, good video.
If it burns longer then bet it's because of added chemicals...BTW...I love the Saints and LSU paraphernalia in the background.
Good video - I use the original one like crazy. The only other I've ever used was their apple wood one. The last time I bout my wood, kings ford was there buying lots of apple wood so I know they use the same wood I burn. Good video!
Thanks Tom, appreciate you watching, I think these type of videos help a lot of folks make an informed choice.
Wanna bet that it's because of added chemicals ? BTW...LOVE the Saints and LSU paraphernalia in the background !
how's temperature of each
where do you find the 2 bags for $8.00 deal?
Is it me or has it changed. Original charcoal used to be larger. It would last longer. They made the coal smaller and bags are smaller than before. (years ago) Now they sell 2 different versions. The new long burning charcoal is the older version and we pay more for it. Bags went from 20lbs to 16 lbs. Why go through all of this. Raise the price a little and sell one standard charcoal. I am annoyed by the changes. Original charcoal is just marketing to me. I have used this for years and now I want to switch to another brand because of it.
I've tried other brand over the years many times before. When there is a big price difference; even though I know better I can't help myself; I still buy the Kingsford, but I always take a chance and hope that the cheaper bag will be just as good as Kingsford Original, so I buy less Original and pick up a few bags of the sale priced charcoal only to always be disappointed. While the cheaper brands are usually good enough for some burger's and dogs, they always disappoint when it comes to smoking or cooking anything else. Most recently I've tried smoking pork butt with Embers charcoal. Embers worked and it was a cheaper than Kingsford, but it took a lot more effort because I had to keep a much closer eye to maintain temps and keep adding a lot more coals than I would have had I used Kingsford. While it was a success and I'm sure it can be done with any cheaper charcoal if your willing to work hard enough, I'm going to stick with Kingsford from now on because they never let me down even with minimal effort. Until of course I run into another too good to be true sale...............Lol
Another excellent video Daryl I don't know if you have a store called Lowe's Home Improvement down where you live but I buy Kingsford Charcoal it's like 36.2 lb for 13 bucks on sale when they're on sale and I was buy for five bags and the stuff is almost free pass that out to you people keep up the good work sir thank you
Thanks for the tip, I still have a bunch of kingsford from a purchase I made at Walmart last year when they had their sale. Thanks for watching
SAINTS FAN !! 👍👍👍👍👍👍✌😁😉
I always stock up one the sales at Lowe's and Home Depot !!!
Great info on the video ! 🤙✌😉
Good
Great video sir!
Great video!!
confirmado los Yankis tambien usan Carbon Vegetal (charcoal) para el asado. (Me sorprende el análisis, realmente se lo tomó muy en serio). Saludos desde Argentina : )
Great vid !! do you know how long the long burning has been around ? never seen it in my area.
Ok , just bought a bag of kingsford mesquite charcoal and here's my thoughts on it. Its low quality. Burns out far too quickly. I won't be buying it anymore. If you don't believe me , buy a bag and you'll be back to agree with me.
Lol 😆 I see that #whodat on the background ahh yes 🤘🏽🤘🏽😜
I have a 26" kettle and a slow and sear. I can do 16 cooks with the long burning charcoal and only 12 cooks with the original charcoal
I do like the kingsford Professional
Nice video
Who Dat Nation 👍, good test on charcoal.
Where is the beef sir
I am still waiting for a video of you smoking fish I know you like fish bring it on Big Boy I like it have a great day sir
I'll put it at the top of my list of video projects.....
Can I buy a gas grill that tastes like charcoal? I'm really tired of being disappointed in myself and of being a disappointment to my family. I'm so embarrassed with my grilling skills and the lack thereof. Great video my man... but I suck!
Can't be that bad, but unfortunately you will never get the same flavor from a gas grill as you would charcoal or wood, if you are considering smoking meats such as briskets and pork butts, it can be done on a gas grill but long cooks on a gas grill can be a lot of work and not fuel efficient. You may want to consider getting a small pellet smoker like the Rec Tec or Trager, these take the guess work out of barbecue, almost a set it and forget it smoker. Hope this helps
I wonder if you noticed a difference in how hot each was.
❤❤
Steve harvey let his self go.
It is funny. It's ok.
🎉👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🙏😎
Cost wise it's a wash.
Great now they just need to sell it in bigger bags!
