Just feel bad for Iraqis. Iraqis suffered everything as a result of the war...lost their family members, live in fear everyday, jobless, poverty, terrorist groups, severe split of sectarian conflict, no self-security as being promised. Meanwhile those armies are enjoying & partying as like nothing has happened

I am 52 seconds in...and I already feel the need to speak. I lived in "Iraqi" Baghdad because I was a real soldier, not a radio DJ.
I remember our platoon taking refuge in the green zone after a severe firefight, we needed to use their aide station for our wounded. We rolled up to it, and my friends got out and carried each other inside. I was in the gun turret so I just sat outside waiting, wondering if my friends were going to make it. I couldnt help but stare at the large pool directly across from me. I could see plenty of "soldiers" playing chicken, guys flirting with the girls, pushing each other in and laughing. While we were out there dying, these people are swimming and having fun. I remember how sickening and angry their laughter made me. I realized then....there was definitely two Baghdads.
In that moment, I had more in common with my enemy, than my fellow American. That has stuck with me and so now, when people tell me they served and think we are buddies, my answer is... Do not think you are my brother, solely because you served. If you didnt bleed next to me, then I dont care about you. Infact I am appauled that your mothers got to walk around in the states with their heads high telling people their child is at war and hero, when you were in no danger. While my poor mother feared for my life daily, glued to the news knowing what my job was. Sometimes I forget just how few people actually fought in Iraq vs just deployed there.

15:50 the interaction between the soldiers and the kids is so heartbreaking. People forget the soldier is still a human. They were thrown into a situation they had no control over. Unfortunately that Situation also led to moments were they had to kill innocent bystanders in order to save the lives of their brothers

I remember when I was young and my family and I were sleeping in the yard of the house because of the heat and the power outage after 2003 We woke up frightened around 3:00 am to the sound of bombs and gunfire We saw the American army raiding a house and arresting one of our neighbor's sons and their father in the house and they left. Then the women came out crying in the street. It's one of the very painful memories.😪😪

Mostly every man and teenager during that time was taken there and they DID indeed rown up everyone male over 5 feet tall out of EVERY house and imprisoned them.

Our country has plunged in chaos ever since. You can't imagine how painful those days were. After 20 years, we continue to suffer from the consequences. What makes it more sad is that nobody was held accountable for the so called "Operation Iraq's Freedom" which is based on false claims. I hope the next Iraqi generation will not forget this. Thanks for this documentary.

  • @batesBeckham

8:05 If you listen to this man, I feel sorry for him. Most of us were not there to protect him. None of us were willing to die to save a random Iraqi. Americans dont even do that for each other at home hardly. We thought about our own safety for the sake of our families back home. Thats what happens when you put soldiers in a war they arent invested in with 0 stakes if they lose. I will say there were a few who actually cared, I dont want to overlook their sacrifice.
The Iraqi people werent people to me. They were a camoflauge for the enemy. So to me they were a battlefield factor, nothing more. I can't explain what the mind is doing when it is doing combat. Everyone of them had to be scanned as a potential threat, anyone of them could be a bomb or more. They were no different than the trash on the ground that would be used to hide IEDS, except they were dynamic. Which made them a more stressful battlefield factor. It's not until you come home and decades go by settling in as a civilian, did I finally realize what that camouflauge actually was. Just human beings suffering. And I do feel bad for the way I had to view them. But I was never invested in their problems, I was there due to 9/11. Thats why I signed and for any reading, I went to Afghanistan too.

Second, if they did the right move from the beginning when they toppled the Baath party which is to choose a secular technocrat presidential government from inside the country. Keep the military and police in place and arm them, then leave.
