    Marty is awesome! He builds his own cabins, goes trapping and stays out in the wilderness by himself (before being on the show); flies his own light plane and seems to know how to fix anything. If he wasn't married I'd be out on the first plane to Alaska! Both of my husbands
    couldn't drive a screw in a board. Keep up the good work Marty!

    Marty Seems genuine and know how to "survive"!! Plus flying his plane,which he use for his work and to get to remote locations.He has to have also, a "mechanical Aptitude and attitude" to repair his snow-machine and also maintain/ take care off his plane whilst in remote locations. To take on this type of challenge that very few would do, surely has odds against him.

    A friend of mine grew up with Tom Orr. If they was to dig a little deeper in his history, they would find he used to be a bull rider when he was younger. In fact, he traveled all over doing it and was ranked very high in the standings. Very cool guy.......

I've always known but it's pretty obvious if you really pay attention.Example I recently watched a "behind the scenes" video about Wicked Tuna Every season they have a episode were they're fishing in a storm.Well in this video they showed them in a boat in a parking lot being sprayed by big hoses with lights and cameras shining on them. Lol

    I love them all ,but Tom is my hero ,for a man of his age and having a knee problem I understand all to well ,he just inspires me ,
    His body beat up from years of rodeo ,my back and knees are shot from years of pushing myself to keep working with a bone disease and I have spent years in the mountains and dealt with snow as well ,so I know how hard just walking in snow is ,let alone toting all the gear and traps . .
    So his life style and hard work at his age ,I just love him ,not to take away from any of the other's ,Rich and his dogs and Wilber truck ,Marty and his plane and snow mobile in no mans land ,Eustace and Preston with a gasifier truck ,they are just men I admire .
    My Dad could take take the junk of others and turn it into treasure so the ingenuity of all of them remind me of Dad ,He was not a mountain man but he knew how to take a bad situation and turn it around ,a quality I see in all the Mountain Men

    Eustace Conway, Tom and Nancy Orr, Marty, Lewis and Hawks family are some real tough cookies. I admire their way of living. I’m sure it’s very tough with lots and lots of work but they are Free. Really free. They get up go to their chores wearing what they want , they work hard and have meals with their family and live in nature. There is no better place than living in the woods off the grid. I love it. Eustace and Preston were a wonderful team with a friendship to be admired. They just don’t make ppl like those two. @@zone4garlicfarm Yeah, I really feel for him at Preston's passing, but I have always hated Eustace on the show by far. In particular the first couple seasons, Eustace would do some idiotic b.s. thing and blame it on someone else, 90% of the time, Preston. He got better last couple seasons in that regard, but he is a real drama queen and in my opinion not the brightest bulb on the string. The Gasifier was slightly interesting, but everything else was just typical Appalachia to me (not his personality, his ideas and ways of life). I always thought Preston was bordering on sainthood to put up with him though. They should have starred Preston, perhaps if they had he could've been a little more attentive to his health. Eustace was and is a waste of the viewers' time, but I don't agree with the government shutting down a primitive building like that for code violations. I've always hated how the gov't pokes their noses in everywehre, and in most states you would lose your children at a minimum for living like some of these guys because no running water or other things. Look at Thorn on Live Free or Die (he and Colbert only 2 i like on that one) there is no way he would be allowed to have his daughter stay there for extended periods in most states, many won't allow you to *legally* live in any of the buildings these guys do. No such thing as freedom anymore when you don't have the right to choose whether or not to have running water. (some states allow, or on indian reservations and special circumstances like amish/menonite communities etc citing religious freedom, but most "civilized" states won't) Did a lot of digging into local and state laws a few years back when we were looking to take a family of 7 off the grid and into homesteading in what little way it is still possible in the lower 48, and only found a handful of states whose laws were friendly in all aspects we required and had decent realestate prices, but going from NY to the middle of nowhere WV KY or TN just to look at a piece of land, with or without a building on it, wasn't very feasible, and we found that in virginia you had to hire a realtor before yo ucould even come to the state to start looking at houses or some B.S. like that. The states we thought would be friendly weren't all so when it comes to hunting licenses, tags, and limits, and gun laws even if they are largely unpopulated frontier in large part. Many of the states like Maine, Montana, Wyoming, NM etc etc have exceedingly high hunting costs even for fulltime residents, and painfully low limits (NY has low limits but its not 400bucks for 1 big game tag like in some places) while places like I mentioned before, all residents need no license to hunt their own land, nor their relatives etc, and some parts of say Virginia or WV I think it was you oculd take like 6 elk on the low end, and in some places there was no limit, not to mention the fact elk were even available (their deer kinda suck compared to our white-tails in NY but they didnt just have deer. NY prohibits hunting of feral pigs too even though they are invasive and dangerous while most states encourage it and dont require any license or imposte any limits thereto.

    Not to rain on anyone's parade, because we watch and enjoy the show, but Tom Orr does not have it nearly as bad as the producers would like you to believe. He does not live 100 miles from the nearest grocery store, nor does he "have to bag a deer" in order to live through the winter. He does live withing about 10 miles of The Yaak Mercantile, a small store/gas station and bar/restaurant. The Dirty Shame bar/restaurant is across the street. A couple of miles down the road is a small hotel with a full restaurant. About 40 miles from there is the town of Troy, MT, complete with a bank, gas stations, schools, a grocery store, a couple of hardware stores, etc. All this aside, Tom is quite capable of all of the things that they show him doing on the show, and he and Nancy are very, very nice people. I would be willing to guess that the "extremes" that the other personalities on the show are alleged to live through are not nearly as bad as they are made out to be, but as it is with everything else, reality shows are scripted just like any other TV show. They are not (sometimes, but usually not) spontaneous productions that show whatever happens to pop up in the life of a Mountain Man. Just thought I would bring some reality to the this reality TV show.....

And further, the Santa thing is really weird, we trick kids into believing in a magical reverse burglar that keeps track of kids like they were inmates in the panopticon. What's more, the government wastes millions of dollars every year pretending to track said mythological character, meanwhile parents all over the country stage elaborate deceptions while convincing themselves that they're not lying to their children. No. Contrary to what these people would tell you these type of shows are all completely scripted. They don't really try to hide it if you look into it. Remember Marty and the show portraying how he must kill a sheep or his family will starve? So what's he do? Gets in his plane and flies a few hundred miles to shoot a goat or sheep with maybe 30 lbs of meat. He could have went to the super market stayed home and got more meat for less expense

    • @azwrenchmaster5334
      @azwrenchmaster5334 6 лет назад +5

      History adds the unnecessary drama, and lies, but I'm pretty sure Marty would still jump in a plane to kill a goat without the cameras around. That's just what he does. We all know that with the show's popularity, none of them are starving. Just sucks that they're made to follow the story lines or they won't get that big check.

    • @devinelyinspired
      @devinelyinspired 6 лет назад +4

      @@TimeWarp-pj4kz its not scripted, it's edited for dramatic effect. Don't make things up to look special: you're not. There are shows similar that do script a little more, or exaggerate part-time mountain-men types to full-timers etc, but "these type of shows" are not "ALL completely scripted" some are, some aren't. Ever seen Mick Dodge? You know how he got paid for the show? He didn't. He didn't want to. He had what would have been his pay be put into some fund in line with his wishes ( I forget if it was a school or foundation or waht) Tom Oar, is Tom Oar, whether you see 100% of his life or only 30%, he is who he is, not a city slicker that flies out to some cabin in the woods to film a tv show. Colbert on Live Free or Die really does live in the middle of a Georgia swamp with no electricity or running water in a cabin he built up a tree, but gee, he has to go to a post office to mail out his skins to the auctions each year and he has to pay his property taxes out of that and such income every year to keep his home, and we've seen him drive a truck, he needs a license for that, but those little things dont mean these people and their lives shown on the shows are all made up, none of it is, it's jsut strategically edited to keep viewer itnerest like between commercials etc. You think what's his face didn't fall off a cliff in Alaska TLF? oh I know, whats his face's wife in arkansas there, she didn't literally give birth on camera, barely having the necessary parts blocked at some points. They narrated and edited the clips leading up to it to increase suspense and drama, but the baby was born right there on screen, I bet you think it was faked because they didn't show the gory details, huh?

When I first arrived into the state, one of the first things that caught my eye was a huge fleet of trucks with a giant MOSQUITO decal on the doors. Then I came to the city for college, and I see that these SOB's ain't rode a horse in their lives, and cant stand having dirt on their hands. I figure they can't hardly believe someone could live like that, and it fascinates them. Just like some polecat from the US census that came out from Denver to our ranch. He was absolutely shocked someone could live like we did.

I'm Tom's neighbor and you can hear if a car goes by which is only a few times a day in the winter. During the summer you get a few tourist taking the scenic route but still pretty quiet.
