  • Hello Friend, lets plant the 2024 garden! I'm doing my best to grow a year of food for my family of 4. Obviously on a 1/4 acre homestead you can't do it all, but what I am able to produce here I am making sure it will last us a year.

For your medicinal garden, if you need more space, go vertical. Place a small table or stool, and put the invasive plants on them. Then around the stools or tables, plant other plants. Love all you do for your family, friends and others. ❤

Your kitty is so awesome! Begging for a head scratch! If you have more produce than you need you could search out a local food bank. Our church has a food bank and they appreciate any fresh produce. Also, have you ever made pickled green beans? Last year I made pickled beets and pickled green beans. The beans are excellent as a snack! I usually wrap a bean with a piece of deli turkey for a light snack. So good! To figure out what your plant is there are apps that you can download where you just snap a picture of the plant and the app tells you what it is. There is also an app that if your plant is sick you take a picture of the damage and the app tells you what is wrong.

That thumbnail of you is beautiful! We usually don’t get to see you with your hair down, which is understandable, I don’t wear mine down when I’m busy either. I’m so glad you’re feeling better and are getting your energy back! Here’s a health tip from an older woman, wear a wide brimmed hat and a light long sleeve woven shirt as an over shirt while out in the sun. It will help prevent sun damage that will show up later in life. And, let me tell you, having things frozen off your skin is very painful! Also wear sunglasses to prevent cataracts. I have been wearing them for years and I’m the only one I know who doesn’t have cataracts, and I have light colored eyes.
I’m thinking of getting a retractable hose like you have. I would buy a Hoselink, but they are not as long as I need. I have a different brand of one that I bought used for $17(!), but it doesn’t retract well and needs replaced.
You are such a great gardener!

    • @kittyrichards9915

I agree on protecting from the sun. Having skin cancers frozen is not fun. But it is nothing compared to surgical removals. Fair skin is more susceptible to skin cancer.

I just saw a video on Gary pilchiard don't know if I spelled his name right but he puts a clay pot upside down near your plant the slugs will go inside the pot and stay there. Saturate the ground with water first before you place the pot. You can also put a small bowl filled with beer near your plant there attracted to the yeast. Also ants hate cinnamon or red pepper sprinkle around your plant. Lots to plant. I was laying down plastic and cardboard and fhen mulch in my garden pathways. It's been windy and rainy here lately. I plant nightshade in the same soil as long as it’s amended and there’s a good layer of mulch to protect leaves from water splash back, it’s perfectly fine. As home gardeners we only have so much space to utilize and so much rotation we can do.

Wow, Kelsey, so much accomplished already in your garden. It’s looking so green and beautiful. I’m curious, at about minute 4:45 in the cottage garden there is a dark green, kind of fern looking plant next to a step stool. What is that? I found something in my yard that looks like it could be the same. It’s in a space that we had dumped some compost/dirt mix and I worked there filling pots and transplanting starts last year. I tried some new medicinal oriented options that frankly had little success. Because what I’m seeing isn’t flowering yet and without any tag to identify it, I’m not sure if what I’m seeing is a beautiful weed lol, or a plant that I should dig up and plant.
My seed starting happened more than a little late this year. I’m so grateful for the rate of germination and how well the plants are doing. I do not like to up plant, but I did with the tomatoes yesterday. We are expecting some very nice weather for the next several days but I think it’s too soon to plant the seedlings outside. I will start the hardening off next week when it isn’t so hot. I will be happy to get that done but in the meantime there are still plenty of other projects to focus on. PTL that you are feeling much better and are energized and ready to get at it. Thank you for sharing your garden journey with us, you are such a joy to watch. God Bless you Kelsey. 🤗

The passionflower will start growing fast once the temps are consistently above about 75 degrees and it will not overwinter in PA but it’s worth growing as an annual. I grow it and butterfly pea for my apothecary. Look into hops for medicinal use since you grow herbs that are intended for those specific medicinal applications. Hops are perennial as well which is nice and do overwinter in PA. I find that 1 hops plant, which comes as a rhizome, is more than sufficient. It’s also quite lovely.

Tuesdays are great for me but I will watch either way in all honesty. Things are chugging along in the garden and it’s always nice when rain helps out. We are picking up 14 pallets of soil and compost this afternoon so this will be a busy weekend for us. It’s been a little stressful because I feel like I’m so far behind but it will be worth it once we have all the new amendments down. I do have my greenstalks - minus the 2 I ordered the other day - planted out and a couple of raised beds are planted out with some spring veggies. I’m with you, didn’t we just harvest 2023’s harvest 😂
