One of the biggest challenges of running a farm is watering your crops. At Aanandaa Permaculture farm, we use a combination of rainwater management and irrigation pipes to keep our plants watered round the year.
We dug the borewell at the highest point on the land. After that, we laid a pipe network leading from the borewell down to the lowest point of the land. This network spans over 700 feet. Wherever we need to water the plants, we simply open put a hosepipe on the tap, open it and start watering.
The big trees and the food forest is mostly watered by the rainwater, which we sequester and harvest every monsoon.

Mam a full tour of your farm
Very difficult. Video will be too long!
You may do it as a series. Will us a lot.

Good to see you after such a long time. Happy to see you all safe n happy. Stay safe n healthy....
No word to appraisal. You are great daughter of Earth.
Thats the biggest compliment. Thank you.
Great explanation as always 👏👏
Congratulations 🎉
Very Good Mam..as you always...
I love all your videos
Good information
It would have been nice to show the rainwater harvesting structures, tank and how you set it up from the source.
It would really be helpful if you could do a video on that
Please watch all other videos. It's all covered
Lucky to c this video at right time tks aanandaa
In my design I have planned in such a way that to collect rainwater to make ponds and gravity fed to swales and also plan fore borewell during the dry period. Thanks for your tips🙏🏽🙏🏽

Sounds great!
Thank you 🙏 यही तो मैं जानना चाहती थी कितने दिनो से 😊
Hello mam you are my inspiration
Before starting the irrigation design ( PVC pipes installation & Swales and Contour mapping etc) had you tilled your 11 acres of land and levelled for smooth operations? or started the design with as is bought condition of the land?
What you suggest very first time before starting the design and mapping project?
Never ever ever level your land.
Water flows and you can trap it when you have slopes. You must work with your natural topography
@@farmaanandaa You are right! Avoiding such operations bring cheers to our savings !
That too!
Thanks Mam,
Please make a video on Zones Planning
Mam it is wonderful what you are doing with permaculture could you also throw light on the marketing aspect of your products. How do you meet expenses?
Will try
@Manisha - Are the pipes underground or over ground?
Also for digging borewell, you dug it at the highest point but how did you find out if there was water in that place?
Pipes are over ground, but in places they have got covered with soil.
For digging the borewell, we just relied on local knowledge. The man who digs the borewells in this area, has a good sense of where water will be found.
Background music too loud
Corrected in future videos
Why did you not use a drip irrigation system to water the crops or vegetables.
Any specific reasons
Hmm, somehow, I have never been convinced about drip irrigation. It has too many pipes and management headache. Also I don't like the idea of giving water to trees and plants right on their roots. How will the stretch and grow?
How you use the water from the pond for the plants?
By allowing it to infilterate into the ground and build moisture in the sub soil.
Mam, would you have groundwater level numbers from before having ponds vs after ponds in your farm? Also is there a change in your tubewell water quality?
Our groundwater levels have not changed for 10 years. Our neighbours grow paddy, and pump out millions of litres. Hopefully our water management systems are offsetting their impact.
Madam, Thanks you. I have a question regarding gravitational water pumping, is that you store water in a tank and send across the farm with pipe or you switch on borewell and use in the farm. Pls confirm
Most of the time we use the water from the tank
Any reason for bot using drip irrigation?
Mam cant we become more independent of borewell by creating poly pond what are your views on it......
You can. But do that only if you are getting excess rainfall, and are near a catchment area.
Mam
I inspired by Ananda permafarm and see all your this series videos and more others, I want my farm to convert permafarm and need your help
Pls email on hello@aanandaa.com for any specific help
Namaste..I need a suggestion..is one inch PVC pipe connected from the tank is enough for watering or do we need 2 inch pipe ..pls give information..tnq 🙏
I can't give such site specific advice without knowing the context. It depends on the capacity of water tank, pressure of the water, distance it needs to be carried to and the pressure with which you need the water at the outlet. Please apply your own judgement.
@@farmaanandaa thank you ...
Mam please tell us more about composting, fertilization and pest and disease management and how you do it organically.
Sure. I am putting out training courses as well. Pls subscribe to our emails on www.aanandaa.com
Is there any farm you know of that has all the native desi seeds of vegetables?
No.. if you find one tell us too!
Very nice, but the background music makes it hard to hear and is annoying.
Sorry about that
Agreed.
Is it advised to create a pond to store rainwater?
Only if you have extra water flowing into your land.
Can permaculture be done on non farm land?
Yes, it can be practiced anywhere. It is a way of living, deeply connected with your environment.
How to know whether the shrubs/plants/trees has deep roots or shallow roots?
Big trees have big roots. Small trees and shrubs have small roots.
@ ishvaryakumar33
The size/extent of the plant/ tree/ shrub above the ground will be most likely similar to the size/extent of the roots below the ground.
This I have seen in a video by another Permaculture expert.
I found my answer in the comment section. How smart am I!
Very smart :-)
How do you find the topography of a plot.
By getting a survey of the land. We are launching a course on water management and planning soon. Pls subscribe to our emailing list on www.aanandaa.com to stay informed.
Where is your farm mam I am interested In visit
At present the farm is closed to visitors. Stay tuned for a new visitor program we will be launching later in the year

Hindi me bhi video banaya Karo
Mam, how many acre is required for permaculture.
And how many acre is u r land
I would have explained this topic on irrigation with the help of simple sketches and sketches are the best way to explaining water resources and topography.
Part-1: Borewell
Water is being pump from the bore well to the tank which is constructed at most higher elevation in your property. Then by gravity, it reaches to the crops without pumping the water.
(Here you mentioned there is no pump installed at all for the irrigation but how the water can reach to the tank without pump which is at the higher elevation?)
Part-2: Rain water harvesting structures (farm ponds)
You haven't explained in detailed and one cannot get clear idea with only one sentence.
It would be easier to explain with simple sketches, one sketch for irrigating with Bore well water and second sketch for irrigating with farm ponds.
I know as a water and geospatial engineer its very easy for me to explain but for you it's a bit tough. You may come up with a better video explaining all the aspect of gravity and pumping system irrigation for you property so the viewers can enjoy the video with clear understanding.
Thank you, wish you the good luck
Thank you for your feedback. The water tank is not at a height. It is at ground level. That where the tank is located is at a higher elevation with respect to the rest of the farm.
This is not a tutorial video. We have courses with proper training material which can be seen on www.aanandaa.com.
Mam, How much is the agricultural land cost there?
You'll have to enquire locally. We won't be able to help with that
Ma'am I am from Andhra Pradesh
My only dought is how we can earn money from permaculture bcoz i don't have any back source if I convert my land into permaculture
The same way you earn money in agriculture!
Mam can u please make u r video in hindi so we can more understand its a request 🙏
