My parents are both conservative. Dad is an outright racist and proud of it. Mom is a racist who swears she isn’t but has all the same talking points. Both are openly homophobic and transphobic.
Aside from that, I started to see how different I was when I was very young. They’re both rude to retail and service workers. It might be an older thing, too. I’m not sure who I got my manners from. Maybe from teachers or just treating people the way I want them to treat me. Being rude and hateful also take much more energy, both the energy it takes to always be mad and the energy it takes to care so much about other peoples’ personal lives.

Sounds like my dad so much. I swear to be a constructive one must have at least a bit of anti social personality disorder. I don't mess with him anymore, but he tipped servers so little that I'd cover the rest right in front of him. This is a working class person too btw.

I had pretty much the same parents, same upbringing. I feel this comment in my soul.
It was so bad I emancipated myself at 15, which admittedly lead to a difficult life but honestly… I’d do it again. I’d rather have struggled with homelessness and drugs than have to have finished my youth in that conservative, manipulative and destructive environment.
Now I am financially stable, happy and raising four sons to be nothing like their grandparents. The only bad part about it is that now they’re growing up missing one set of grandparents and that makes me sad but that was my parents choice, not mine.

It’s probably the media we consume as a generation. I do think it’s a lot rarer to see younger people being rude to service workers and they’re usually rich.

Common thing with (kinda) abusive parents it seems. Treating kids like property. Especially in conservative mind - treating raising a child as raising someone who will be in debt to you. Like, in some very regressive countries, this can be so bad that children are legally or socially bound to provide for their grandparents and care for them, as if they aren't free people and... bad parents won't grt cared for, but good ones probably will? Seems like abusive parents securing themselves a nice old age by dragging their kids' future and freedom down

He was forced to leave Canada after becoming a famous scammer in that country, deeply connected to the foundation of organized chiropractic. People who are racist, homophobic, sexist, or any other openly discriminatory mindset, are often very insecure and want to feel powerful and in control. This often also comes out as being rude to those of their own kind whom they see as inferior, usually family, friends, coworkers, or workers at businesses they frequent. An interesting thing my therapist told me is, everyone's actions make sense in the context of how they view the world. When people are doing bizarre or horrible things, it's because, in their view of the world, these things are just, rational, and necessary. The problem with extreme wealth is, it places people in a context that's separated from almost every other person in the world, so people who grow up in that context develop very distorted views of reality. Even if they _intend_ to be good people, what they perceive as "good" is distorted, so they often do bad things, then can't understand why everyone else is upset about it.
This is how I see Elon Musk. He doesn't want to be a bad person. Like you said, he wants people to like him. But he had a very low chance of being a good person because every person in his family, including himself, had/has a warped view of reality which was only exaggerated due to their wealth. In a way, I feel sorry for him, but just because the deck was stacked against him from the start doesn't mean he isn't responsible for the shitty things he has done/is doing. It is possible for wealthy people to change. I think Prince Harry is making an effort to change his distorted perception of the world. Even if he will never have a reasonably accurate perspective, I think he at least wants to give his children a better chance than he got. So Elon Musk has no excuse.

Yeah it's easy to see that Elon Musk does just want to be liked.
The problem is that he seems to be incapable any self-reflection or taking any criticism at all!
I feel like the turning point for Elon Musk, both in terms of his popularity with the more left-wing side of the spectrum (I know it's when my opinion of him turned!) and his own political leanings, was the Thai cave incident where he called one of the volunteer team a PDF-file because he insulted his submarine, which was never going work in that cave.
And, honestly, that could so easily have just not been a big deal.
All people were really saying was "Whoa, bro! You went way too far! You really need to just back off and stay out of this!"
And, if he'd done that. If he'd deleted the tweet and then just laid low for a few months, he'd have been fine.
However, I think it was the start of figuring out that the place where he'd find fans who'd give him constant praise and defend everything he did wasn't on the left, but rather among right-wingers and angry douchebros who think they're the only rational people alive.

Okay just getting to the Grandfather part, but absolutely nothing he believed in is okay to me.... indigenous americans, and mexican people, we really are sick of white men dreaming of how to continually imagine new ways to colonize this continent. And really, I'd like more leftists to remember our perspective is not a historical one. I do feel like you have tried to be aware when things involve the US etc about native peoples concerns; however, it should be a primary critique of the idea of america and "technocracy." Thanks for your content, really have been waiting for more about Musks family tbh.... im only 1/4 in and steaming his grandad wanted to colonize a whole continent with this capitalist bs....

My feeling on his is that, yes, his father and grandfathers' sins are not Elon Musk's and he should not be blamed for them and I understand why he hates them.
However, he's also living up to the family tradition of being a horrible parent who neglects and traumatizes his own children, and also being a horrible person who harms his country's society at large!
Which is to say, Elon Musk sucks on his own merit, I get why his daughter wants nothing to do with him, and I hate that he is a powerful person because he definitely doesn't deserve to be.

Huh, that's rather interesting to me. At one point early on in my college years, I was - for lack of a better term - enamored with the Technocratic movement of the 30s and 40s, particularly for the ideas of championing leadership based on scientific expertise and knowledge along with the ideas of pacifism through isolationism. I've long since moved on from that mindset as I'd come to realize quite a bit of that line of thinking is at best an out of touch idealized folly, both with regards to the context at the time, along with human nature and broader society in general. This was a while before Elon's fame really took off, and aside from the odd occurrence the term came up in a disconnected context, this is the first time I really thought back on it in a long while and never would have guessed there was such a direct connection between that movement and the modern day example of why it was such a bad idea in the first place, and it explains so damn much about the man. God damn.

Technocracy sounds like an elitist subversion of managers, professionals, engineers and scientists of Communism. Early socialist political philosophy certainly flirted with scientists in positions of decision making and technocratic administration. Saint-Simon, Comte, Marx. However this “scientific society” founded on social scientific theory would be a new age of science and religion synthesizing and the administration of industry replacing formal state government. Economics and politics becoming a single issue in the industrial administering by associations of producers. The difference is in the elimination of class disparities, or class altogether, and administration of social and industrial affairs by free associated producers, not some elite technocrats. The access to scientific knowledge and training for expertise would be accessible to all as work becomes more optimal and laborers are needed less for production, or new productivity techniques and technologies are achieved. There wouldn’t be an elite class of anything. Huge difference between l Technocracy and Communism. Free association and self-management or rule by scientists until rule by AI 👨‍🔬 🤖v 👷🏾 🛠️

19:10 That's the trap of the wealth system. It holds the rich in place just as assuredly as the poor. It's just that the compensations are far better. There is a freedom of movement, freedom from material concerns, but they are kept in their place. Just that their yard is larger than ours.
Of course, I dont feel sympathy for them. They get to cry on gold toilets, after all.

"Comfortable". That's the N American code word, as far as I can tell. The richer people are, the more they default to admitting to merely being "comfortable".
Which is such a privilege. I can only imagine what it would be like to have problems & be able to just...solve them. To be able to have agency in the world. To feel justified in your $6 latte you're treating yourself to. Comfortable. What a dream. What a goal.

What I have been coming to understand, is that rich people have their ideas and opinions taken seriously with very little backing it up other than sometimes having a one hit wonder of success. Also that rich people over different generations always seem to want to hoard wealth, hate unions, and hate on jewish people.
The good thing with this day and age, before we plunge into another catastrophic event, is that people have a better ability to navigate and displace propaganda and conspiracy. Even if it is just a smaller group of people learning from the past human anthropology.
