I had a TIA when I was 55, due to a faulty heart valve. I went overnight from cycling every day to not even being able to go upstairs without having to stop for a breather. Gradually, with meds and patience, I'm (5 years later) in reasonable condition, nowhere near what I was, but able to ride down to the shops. I've had to accept that I'll never be back to my former fitness, or 25 again :) I find myself being grateful for what I can do, rather than mourning what I can no longer do. Hopefully this year I'm going to go on a short tour again. That's my current goal. Keep well and take it easy.

Thank you for being vulnerable and addressing issues that are not discussed enough. Cycling needs voices like yours!

"We all know running is the worst of the exercises." 😂 I totally agree!

Yes! Thanks for sharing. I can totally relate. There are cycles to body health, but fully agree, drink water, get good, sleep keep moving and stretch!

Thank you for sharing. I identify with your description very much. In my own journey, I have come to learn a bit about dynamic vs static stretching and addressing my muscle imbalances. Good luck with finding your solutions!

Heya Hannah, thanks for this brave vulnerable content! Ya, bodies are wonderful but very complex and it can be incredibly frustrating to get to the bottom of issues, especially when they are chronic or from genetics. I get your frustration with hamstrings! Haven't ever been able to touch my toes properly, but a lot of that is due to my long (proportionally) torso. I am 6' but most is in my long back and the hamstrings are continually fighting to keep me from falling over. I stretch like crazy just to maintain fitness.Glad that you are going to see a PT which can help AND that you are pivoting to more bike. How are you with walking to mix it up? It is the 'exercise' people dismiss dismiss but it's amazing for osteoporosis prevention and gentle joint mobization. Happy that you are not giving up and that you have a plan. Thanks for being human and open. Sending healing thoughts your way.

Thanks for talking about this. Very similar experience here. It's a definite struggle when to you hit that cycle of "I need more exercise to help my physical/mental health but that exercise causes physical issues that then trigger thoughts and feelings that don't really help my mental health." Glad you're staying body positive.

Yes!! That cycle can be really frustrating, if not debilitating

Relax. Breathe. It'll pass. I also did a bit of running, culminating in a trail ultra and have come back to mountain biking. My one true love.

I hated running growing up but I knew I needed an exercise I could do without equipment. It was tough in the beginning but it has become more rewarding than cycling IMO. Don't get me wrong, I love cycling but I find it much easier. I ran my first half marathon this best February so it's been an awesome achievement! I think you will learn to love it. PS also runners high is a legit thing

Running fast, especially for the first time in a while, is a special torture. But slow, easy running, trail running , or jogging with lots of interspersed hiking is amazing. Trails are more fun with their ambiance and variety. But I vastly prefer road cycling to road running just because of how much more of the world you get to see.

I don't like running either but that's because I'm too fat and I tend to hurt my heels very easily. Been walking a lot for the last little while and on friday I thought just for kicks I'd try to jog some short sections. It was fun. Certainly good for getting my heart rate up. I might try it more often.

I was pretty young when an older colleague convinced me that running was basically just a waiting game for making yourself lame. For him, it came during a lunchtime run where he misjudged the shoulder of the road, landed his right foot about 2"/ inches lower than he expected, and ended up tearing the loving sh*t out of his right knee. He couldn't even walk right for nearly a year. (Of course he tried to get back into running again after that lol)

Your vulnerability is very sexy. With your other microphone you are the whole package from this side of the screen(lol). I'm sorry for how you're feeling but honestly you look pretty healthy and happy in the face. I feel like your indecision about what your gonna be when you grow up is like a girl breaking up with her boyfriend (ha!) giving me just a bit of a chance. BACKPACKING! thats where the happiness is. In the high mountains of the west. You're fairly well fitted out already. In my opinion it checks many of the boxes important to you. It takes you further away from the Hussle and bustle that bikepacking can't always do.
Just a thought - people are watching you more than they're into the content I'd bet. Keep on being you.
    Cheers

You're talking about stretching and where you hold your stress, but you didn't mention rest. You need to spend more time in bed, more time sitting on your armchair doing nothing, and have one day every week when you do nothing physically demanding. Also, I feel the same about running; last week I did my first session of Jiu Jitsu at the age of forty three.

Welcome to the club! It sucks. Yoga helps. Go gently and take it slow. Yoga class are good, look for the slower paced stuff with words like Yin or Restore in the title. But, you don’t actually need classes, a book from the library or some RUclips videos will do just fine.

Honestly I've never liked running 😂 I just don't get it. I've only just started cycling after decades away. I cycled as a child and knew I'd love it as an adult ❤
I'd definitely never participate in a marathon 😅

Even though its uncomfortable and a lot of work--running releases endorphins as you and everyone probably already knows... Running gives a person an incredible sense of well being after the run... At least for me.
