More deaths in Australia each year happen from drowning than from snake bites, spider bites and shark attacks. To put it in perspective- about 96 people died from snake bite from 1979 to Jan 2023 and 1 person from a spider bite in Australia. The worldwide figure for death from snake bite is about 63,000 per year. About 70 people have died in a shark attack since 1980. The number of drownings from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022 was 339. The safest thing - swim between the flags on beaches and only swim on patrolled beaches.
I enjoyed your video, and generally what you said was pretty accurate. You correctly praised Sydney's beaches and the magnificent Blue Mountains. But you made just a passing reference to Melbourne's "boring" beaches and some off-the-wall comment about Mt Buller, which is a winter ski resort a few hours' drive north of Melbourne. However, Melbourne also has the beautiful Dandenong Ranges in the east, with its temperate rainforests, funky little towns, and tulip and berry farms. Drive a couple of hours south and you hit the awesome Great Ocean Road, which winds its way along Victoria's southern coastline heading west, past some of the greatest surfing beaches in the world, incredible coastal rock formations and ocean scenery, and picturesque mountain rainforests. Go a few hours west of Melbourne through central Victoria and you come to the Grampians, which are the mountains which form the tail end of the Great Dividing Range (of which Sydney's Blue Mountains are a part), where you can go hiking, camping and mountain climbing, and see some amazing views and a multitude of wildlife. Closer to Melbourne, follow the roads around the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay for some beautiful bayside scenery and safe, calm beaches with their unique bathing boxes, then continue south through Mornington Peninsula for more beaches, quaint, funky towns, and beautiful bay views. Drive across the peninsula and visit some of Australia's best vineyards and wineries, and drive south to some awesome, pristine surfing beaches. If you love snow in winter, drive north and east of Melbourne to several snow and ski resorts with some of the best ski runs you can find anywhere. So even though you gave a pretty fair comparison of Sydney and Melbourne in most aspects, to give Melbourne's surrounding natural scenery such a brief, passing reference compared with Sydney's, was a bit disappointing.
Graham Coles hey Graham! Really appreciate your comment. Don’t get me wrong- the state of Victoria offers a LOT of great views, from highlands to islands. However, I didn’t include The Grampians, Mount Buller, Great Ocean Road (been there twice already) since they are all outside Melbourne. Furthermore, I only made the comparisons based from what you’ll see within the city limits. Hope you get my point. Thanks for watching. Cheers, mate!

That was a good video. Thanks for making it. There was one mistake that I am going to clarify: Melbourne is not on the Tasman Sea. Melbourne lies on Port Phillip Bay, a large, sheltered bay with a narrow entrance to Bass Strait (that separates mainland Australia from Tasmania). It's why Melbourne's beaches aren't surf beaches. Sydney is on the Tasman Sea. Hence its beaches are surf beaches.
