In light of the mafia trilogy remastered remake, I wanted make a mini-documentary on the founder of organized crime and that made the mafia game possible - Charles Lucky Luciano.
It’s 1931, near the end of the very profitable prohibition era in New York, things are pretty lawless in the criminal underground.
You’re Lucky Luciano, a mobster in New York’s largest Italian gang, headed by, aka “Joe the Boss”. You’re part of the rising second generation of Italian mobsters that spoke English and were raised in America. You didn’t care for silly things. You were an entrepreneur and a Scilian. You saw the opportunity to make even more money by expanding operations into new ventures.
Joe the Boss was against the second biggest Italian borgata, headed by Salvatore Maranzano. He was too power hungry and caught up in his giant ego. And you’ve grown a little disenchanted by all this violence. Even if this war were to end right now, war will certainly break out again in the future. After some murders here & there, you end this war and created The Commission.
This war started when your boss, Giuseppe Joe the Boss Masseria, got the idea that he would be able to declare himself as the boss of bosses, and all the other gangs would just submit to his rule.
Eighteen months later, you finally decided to end it. You went to Maranzano and made a deal behind your bosses back. You’ll get to claim victory and get recognized as the new boss of Joe’s family. Maranzano accepted. And boom - the war was over. Maranzano won and recognized you as the boss.
But Maranzano decided to go back on the deal he made with you by making the same arrogant mistake that Joe the Boss made. Maranzano forced all families into the tight chain of command. He brought all the traditional rules from the Sicilian mafia to America. Maranzano betrayed you. If you don’t act fast, you’ll be lying next to your old boss.
Everyone knew Luciano was practically the Boss of all Bosses. The Five Families slowly but surely DESTROYED their competition. Lucky Luciano became the most powerful mobster in New York.
The rise of the ambitious Luciano gave rise to an prosecutor, named Thomas Dewey. Dewey’s goal was to paint the prostitutes as poor that Lucky took advantage of. Luciano was sentenced to 30-50 years in prison. Once he was out of prison, Dewey got him deported back to Italy and never got to see his beloved home of New York ever again until he died of a heart attack at 64.

I suppose we lack that "society" thing nowadays. They are painted as classy, tough guys, who had this Brotherhood of fellows who backed them. Its supposed that they had rules, and live under a aim.
@@castronator29 barbarians is what they were and what they are. Do not romanticise them.
@@castronator29 They are criminals and really bad guys.
@@castronator29 Well, even the Mafioso & the other Organized Crime Families lost that "taste" if you say that so. Even the Yakuza aren't the good ole Robinhood people, it's all about the money now.
Speaking of the Chinese Triads, they are divided onto several factions making it seemingly impossible to judge their system upon one's gang.
Now-a-days most of these organized crime units operate in the shadows , commiting white-collar crimes that'd attract less heat on them, Unlike the Mexican cartels cuz they are ruthless af.
You long for brotherhood, something very rare these days for us ambitious lost young men.
Nice video about one of the most important US mob in the history. There is 2 important points missing : 1- Luciano was released from prison and sent to Sicily not spontaneously but because he was an intermediary between USA and Sicilian mafia to help US troops invading Sicily and Italy in general. 2- One important information was that Dewey at the beginning of his career was targeted by another mob who wanted him dead but Luciano and the syndicate didn't allow his murder and Dewey never came to know it and it's interesting that he he was the one to later put Luciano in Prison.
You are correct. Dutch Schultz wanted to have Dewey killed. Luciano did not approve, and actually had Schultz killed because of this. Dewey owed his life to Luciano. I have read that Dewey felt guilty for having trumped up the charges on Luciano, and this was a factor in Luciano getting released from prison. One fact about Luciano that does not get stressed a lot is that early in his criminal career Luciano was a rat. He rolled on some people to get a lighter sentence for some drug charges. Too he became very fearful of the mob in his later life. He sensed they wanted him dead, and the stress of this is believed to have contributed to him having heart attacks in his final days. These mob guys are all bravado when it comes to killing others, but when their own life is on the line it is a different story with all but a few of them. Sonny Black was a notable exception. He knew his number was up, he went to the meeting anyway and told them to shoot him again and make it a good one after the first shot didn't kill him.
Even Joe Bonnano thought Schultz was crazy to do this and was offed before he got close to Dewey. As Bugsy Siegal put it, we only kill each it other not others outside the mob.

Do one video about the Jewish Mafia !
While this video did an amazing job covered Lucky Luciano and the Italian Mafia, you overlooked the role Jewish gangsters such as Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel played in relation to Lucky Luciano and the formation of The Commission and Murder, inc.
Meyer Lansky, was arguably Lucky Luciano’s right hand man and known as the Mafia’s accountant.
Bugsy Siegel was instrumental in the create of what we know today as Las Vegas!
and these are just two Jewish gangsters.
Mati Geula Cohen yes very true , I will add that Siegel and Lansky were the inspiration for characters Mo Green and Hyman Roth in the Godfather 1 and 2
Lansky was more than a right-hand man, they were childhood friends and business partners, he was actually the brains of the operation.
Ok we get it you're Jewish
Still, it was all under command of the Italians. They should definitely get their own video, as they're very interesting but the Italian Mafia will always be the centerpiece when it comes to organized crime. They simply achieved so much that other syndicates never will. And that's including today's time. A Southern Italian mafia by the name of 'ndrangheta rakes in from 50 to a 100 billion a year. Crazy stuff.

Luciano got VD on purpose to avoid going to war.
He also wanted to get rid of the initiation ceremony but Lansky told him to keep it because people need tradition
you did a awesome job, i do feel its worth mentioning that during ww2 the US government came to lucky in jail and asked him for help getting into the south of Italy in return he will be reliced from jail, they didn't tell him that he would be deported to Italy. Lucky loved America.

Jake: A random video segment on life of an ancient mobster.
There is story that Lucky helped US soldiers during war to invade Sicily/Italy by ordering people in Sicily to helped soldiers and guide them
It's not a story, it actually happened. "Operation Underworld", it was called, and it was actually an official, organized effort by the United States Navy. It entailed using the Mafia, which controlled the New York dock workers union, to make sure that the port of New York, a vital piece of the US war effort (since it was where all the troops and materials en route to Europe set sail from), continued to run smoothly, without any strikes or work stoppages or anything of the sort; also, the Mafia would investigate and report on any potential fascist sympathizers or spies among the mostly Italian dock workers. In return for his services, the US Navy convinced the state of New York to downgrade Luciano's sentence from life in prison to ""just"" deportation back to Italy.
@@MrConstantine02 your confusing the dock instance with the invasion of Sicily. Both happened but underworld was only in relation to the docks
Yes it did happen, made men in sicily provided info, support and logistics to allied solders landing in sicily to free italy
Don Calagero vicini... spelling is wrong im sure but that's the Don in Sicily that helped with Luciano

I love your videos, very informational, engaging and extremely binge worthy!
This was great although some of it was a little confused. Mainly the 5 familes of NY were not really territory based. Each family had its own base of operations and so they may have had heavier presence in some areas. But for the most part the city of New York was deemed open territory. The commision however was not originally comprised solely of NY families and many outer area families were included. Those families were territory based. Florida, Detroit, Buffalo, etc.
Also the names were not Gambino etc at that time, and Chicago believe it or not was not a part. Although they were respected and over time considered de facto members as they functioned the same way. But for example in Chicago they are not considered Cosa Nostra or mafia. They are called the Outfit. Capone was not part of Lucianos project as he considered himself too big and was arrested and incarcerated before Luciano's power would have been impossible to ignore.
Thanks for posting this. I was looking for something to watch during dinner!!
The mafia has been around since the 1800's in Sicily

THANKS DUDE!!
Hey Jake I told you all of that stuff in confidence :(
I feel like I can learn more from this guy from 1 video than I can learn from 1 year at school.
I look up to him, before any of the series came up.
In 1908, a bunch of anti-sultanate Turks led the Turkish revolution and abolished the Sultan and its power. They were known as Young Turks (because of their ambitions and visions)
The term Young Turk stuck not only to the Turks that led the successful revolution, but to anyone with such kind of ambitions and visions. To anyone that saw the world differently and vowed to change it. To modernize it if you will.
In 1931, Lucky Luciano became LCN's Young Turk. Where others saw war, he saw peace and prosperity. Where others saw money and power, he saw an equal opportunity for everyone to make money and profit from businesses. He changed the spectrum of the American Mafia.
Luciano earned the nickname Young Turk more than everyone - at least in Organized Crime.
