I load these in 62 grain at 3050 fps and they are devastating, factory load even at 2700fps is even great. I drop deer with it yearly, expands to 50 cal, sticks in skin on backside or just squirts out the other side, they usually dont even run, just stand there and fall over 3 sec later. They expand out to 600 yards from 16 inch.
they say you should use it out of nothing longer then 16". Call their customer service. Ask them about 3050 for the 62 gr.....I know what they'll say. Plated jackets have a tendency to come off at higher velocities.

Speer gold dot 223 in 64 grains. Excellent round and while I have always been leery of using on game. I dropped two does this year at 123 and 164 yards. One dropped in her tracks the other made it 20 yards and piled up.
Thanks for taking the time to do this testing. Very timely review for me. I’m going to reload some 55 grain and 75 grain Speer bullets in .223 and it will be nice to go back and look at these velocities. I also have some of the factory ammo as well. Great to see it performing so well.
You bet! Glad to hear that you'll be using the data for your own use too - what it's all about. Hopefully I'll be getting a hold of some 62 and 75 grain versions and be able to run them through the same tests.
9:55 you stated you were expecting the denim to clog up- but these projectiles are not hollow points so no clogging. So the denim slowed down the projectile a tad and still got 14” penetration. Your videos are excellent.
How's the reliability of this round for you? I am running this same exact ammo (55grain) in my home defense AR but have yet to actually shoot any of it yet because of the price lol, only have ran maybe 200 rounds of white box 556 winchester all flawless so I'm taking the chance. I'm literally betting my life on this round you could say.
@@KC--1776 This is the choice of many Law Enforcement Agencies including Federal. It's what I run for Home/personal defense. This is NOT match ammo. NICE camera work! I have 1000 rounds of the 55gr and 1000 of the 75gr sitting around the house and I'm glad to see the 55gr did so well! Would love to see how the 62gr & 75gr perform as well... Thanks 4 the video!
Long ago, during a break in military service, I worked at a SO that issued me a brand new (or newly refurbished) M16A1 and the 55 gr. Gold Dots. Now that I’m collecting retro H&R M16A1s (gray slick side and black w forward assist - both have 12 twist barrels), I want to get a couple boxes for nostalgia reasons.
In a 1/9 barrel twist at 2650fps the Speer Gold Dot 75gr is spin stable to 200yds in 16" barrel then is marginal spin stable. Speer Gold Dot, BC 0.22 @ 55gr @ 0.725" length, 62gr @ BC 0.310 @ 0.810" length, 75gr @ BC 0.4 @ 0.936" length. Speer did a great job with these bullets. Berger spin calculator has them all spin stable in a 16" @ 1/9 twist.
From my understanding all major manufacturers .223 volocity are from 24" barrela and the standard for 556 is from 20" barrels. That's why many loads of .223 come out so much lower then advertised.
Understood, I frequently state that on my channel. I could have done a better job articulating that round performance is not necessarily tied to published velocity. At no time do we expect to see SAAMI spec barrel test results out of off the shelf barrels.
Cant go wrong with Gold dots, ever! I opted personally for the 62gr Bonded loads by federal, which is essentially the same exact projectile but in my experience about 100fps faster load and got them on sale about 40cpr cheaper than the GD loads so grabbed 3 500rnd cases.) Out of my 14.5 Geissele upper They do consistent and respectable 1.25-1.5MOA (which ill absolutely take all day from a duty carbine load with a great barrel and only a 1-6 LPVO/offset red dot) My 20in Colt SPR build gets a diet of 77gr OTMs for those longer pokes but its beyond argument that these Bonded softpoint loads are the superior choice in every metric for a general purpose Duty round out to 400yds with a carbine. Absolutely proven performers.

GoldDot rifle rounds are nasty, and the bullets themselves are very accurate. I use the 140 grain bullets in 6.5 creedmoor. They make a 75 grain gold dot and they are just as accurate as the Hornaday 77 grain BTHP. The 62 grain bullets are almost always available and they are awesome. That is at maximum pressure though (well 0.2 grains above published max for that powder and bullet weight) and i do get a slight shiny spot from the ejector (no bur raised or anything crazy, but i wouldn't load them any hotter than that.)
12.5 and down better to use soft points for indoor/cqb use then just switch to taped mags for everything else but even out the shorty better expansion, less penetration and can defeat body armor over a Ar9
I’ll buy as much of this stuff as I can afford when available, not sure what the price is but I imagine that these sell for more than $1.50/round during this time ( September 2021). I normally buy Wolf Gold and Hornady 55gr. FMJ standard stuff.
$1.25 is normal for gold dots right now. Get the 64 gain model if you can, the 62 grain ones are a close second option. However the 55 and 75 gr options are still plenty good when compared to any FMJ. Edit:75, not 77
5.56 fragments so violently at velocity over 3000 fps that I think a 55 gr fmj is very unlikely to over penetrate. Just make sure you don't have a 223 type 55gr loading at 2700ish fps. The fragment effect will be less reliable and will cause a higher instance of over penetration
Why would one go with the 55g rather than the 60 or 70 option? I've got 60 rounds of the 75g already in the mag ready to go. I pray to God I'll never have to us them and they'll turn into range rounds with some age change for newer ammo but if the need for protection arises I'm glad to have a round I can rely on!
Maybe consistency? If one trains almost exclusively with cheap 55 grain FMJ it might make sense to look for a soft point that matches almost perfectly their training ammunition
Great video but I agree that the accuracy test should reach out to 100yrds. At 25 yrds there isn't much point. You never know at what distance you will have to shoot in a self defense situation, especially with a long gun.

It's a plated bullet......speer gets crazy if you call them and ask about reloading them into 22-250....they talk like it will blow up in the barrel. Speer doesn't load it super hot for the 223.
Usually, Hornady has been pointing out use of 20” BBLs recently. By in large they use SAAMI spec barrels. I always like publishing practical numbers for reference, with the understanding that they will always be less velocity than the number published...the question is, by how much?
