  • So let’s state from the start, this isn’t the Toyota GR Yaris, the Japanese manufacturer's rally inspired hot hatch. No, this is the Toyota Yaris GR Sport, a regular version of Toyota's popular hatchback, but in its sportiest, range-topping GR Sport specification. Starting from £25,000, it’s powered by a 1.5-litre hybrid petrol engine, producing 114bhp. However, despite its warm hatch looks, the GR Sport isn’t particularly quick, with 0-62mph in 9.7sec and a top speed of 109mph. It is well kitted out though, with standard equipment including an 8.0in infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, sports seats, automatic headlights, a reversing camera, LED headlights and Toyota’s safety sense pack, which features pre-collision assist, lane assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beam. It also looks rather different from other Yaris models, with an updated mesh front grille, black trim and black door mirrors, but underneath is where the key changes have been made with the added GR influence. The Yaris GR Sport gets GT Sport suspension tuning with upgraded dampers, which Toyota says improves ride comfort and steering response, while the rear gains retuned springs to better control body roll. There’s also a set of scuff plates and 18in alloy wheels, while underfloor bracing has been bolstered on both sides of the car for improved handling. It may not be the quickest hatch out there, but the Yaris GR Sport is extremely agile and very nimble in the turns.
When it comes to economy, you will begin to see the benefits of the Yaris’ engine after you’ve picked up speed on long motorway stints or when you’re shuffling your way through traffic. We easily returned upwards of 50mpg, in line with Toyota’s official combined estimate of between 57.6 and 64.2mpg and the added EV mode is very effective in traffic.
So what's our verdict? Well, for £25,000 the Yaris GR Sport does have a few rivals. You can buy a Ford Fiesta in ST-Line trim, and that car does a much better job at providing warm hatch driving experience and then there’s the Hyundai i20 N Line, which is available in a manual transmission with both of these cars several thousand pounds cheaper. At the end of the day its down to a test drive and the Yaris GR Sport should definitely be in your top five to try out on the road.

No, "B mode" does not get you maximum regen. It has nothing to do with regen. It's for downhill breaking with the engine. Driving in B like this stresses the components unnecessarily for no reason - AND it affects fuel consumption negatively. So many car reviewers get this wrong for some reason. Maybe Toyota should educate them in the presentations?

A nice, straight-talking review. I've got a Yaris GR Sport and I absolutely love it! I would agree that the city pack option is well worth having. In addition to the intelligent parking sensors and superb blind spot monitoring, the sat nav is the only one I've ever experienced where the lady begins most of the direction instructions with... "please". How polite is that? 😄

I also have a 21 plate hybrid and its quiet quick of the mark when you are at traffic lights or a junction and it is doing 75 mpg all the time without even trying they are fantastic on fuel

B mode is for steep down hills only as it forces the engine to stay on wich you don't want

    •  Год назад +2

There are some tests how much energy you gain going down hills with D and B - results were that D gives more energy. B uses petrol motor for breaking, D uses electric engine for breaking and energy recuperation.

Just bought one of these. We bought it because of the auto box, fuel economy plus the looks.. Partner ran a Clio gt line for 9 years which had the paddles. We’ve Probably used the paddles twice in all that time.

AJ why was you driving around in B mode, brake regen, that mainly for going down hill or stop start traffic so you don’t have to use the brake peddle.. that’s also holding back on the acceleration. We have on in design plus or something, same red with a black bi-tone roof. Great little cars.

The electric motor can run up to 80 mph, though only kicks in at higher speeeds when cruising or to assist the engine when accelerating and the battery has a claimed range of up to 4 miles

Toyota is nuts for not bringing the power up to the 150-180hp range with this one. I know more than likely they did not want to have inhouse competition for the GR Yaris but still...The two models and night and day, even if this would have more power.
Also: automatic transmission in this car, wtf? It should be considered as a crime. Like buying an MX5 with automatic.

You can’t have paddles with a cvt 😂

    •  Год назад +1

You can. My Toyota Corolla 2.0 HBD (2020) got paddles and also there is no B but instead +/- (sequence gearbox mode).

    • @EvzenEmanuel
      @EvzenEmanuel 4 месяца назад +1

The paddles just changes the engine breaking strength. It's not sequence gearbox mode per se.

The fact you’re driving in B is horrific. Get that into Drive and only use B on steep downhills. It uses the engine braking down the hill rather than having to consistently brake. Easy recharge

I thought this engine was now 130bhp, the old version was 115 bhp ?
