  • Today we are looking at the Matrix Mixer! They are great devices that offer useful basic utilitarian functions, but also open up creative routing within the modular. In this video I quickly show how a Matrix Mixer works, and then I dive into four basic concepts: Modulation routing. Audio routing. Sequencing. And feedback.

    One other possible use is CV ducking. So amplitude CV such as envelopes for three different voices to inputs 2, 3 & 4. Then the envelope from a kick drum, (or whatever) to input 1 set to bipolar and turned to an inverted position (or via an inverter for a matrix mixer that isn't bipolar). Then the CV for the kick reduces the amplitude of the other voices.
    I also had another sequencer idea while watching this :)
    Set the first three rows as a sequencer, so 12 steps max. With a 3way sequential switch or CV sequence (I sometimes use the gate output expander A-161, or Ladik 'outs' expander for the SEQ-8))
    Then a divided down sequential switch to route the column outputs.
    Now I can put some arbitrary CV into that 4th input to independently transpose the individual columns, either manually, or with another sequencer, or S&H LFO... so now I have a triplet (or 6:8? or 12/8(?)) feel with a way to modulate the individual triplets as units
    (This is similar to something I tried recently using the first three full columns as sequencer, and the last as a set of values that can be sent to a comparator or VC switch to manipulate the routing of envelopes or audio per note in a way that is repeated par 4 note column... worked pretty well)
    Gonna go and try that out :)

    • @MonotrailTechTalk
      @MonotrailTechTalk  Год назад +2

      Hey, thanks for sharing! That ducking trick is excellent! I often use an inverted envelope on VCAs for that, but mixing the ducking envelope in with the positive ones is a solid ideas :)
      Sequencer trick as well. I like that you start to see more ideas as you stare at it for some time. Cheers!

    • @MonotrailTechTalk
      @MonotrailTechTalk  Год назад +1

      The switch sets if the knobs in that column react like a unipolar or bipolar attenuator. So in unipolar mode, you can go from fully attenuated (to the left) to full signal (to the right). In bipolar mode the signal is fully attenuated/closed in the middle. To the right you can go to full signal. To the left you can go to full inverted signal. This acts like a polarizer.

    Hello, thanks for video and if I may ask a simple question please? - Can I connect say 4 mics each of the 4 inputs , and connect 4 Headphones to 4 outputs and selectively route inputs to outputs? My use case is to send selective mics to specific outputs only and not across the monitor outputs (As in Podcast mixer that connects all inputs to all outputs). Hope that makes sense. I hope these connectors support mics and provide phantom power

    • @MonotrailTechTalk
      @MonotrailTechTalk  Год назад

      Hi there! You can connect any mono input signal to any mono output signal with this specific mixer. What you connect to what is up to you. No phantom power provided here of course- though. And if you like to process sounds from mics within the modular you probably need some input or gain module first.

  • @flourfree2K
    @flourfree2K Год назад

    This is all fine and dandy, but you might have no more space in your rack to fit a 20HP module.
    You might probably have some single mixers (i.e.: The #Doepfer A-138n, which can process both audio and CV signals in 4HP only) in your rack.
    All you need then is some multiples to split the same signal to input 1 of your mixers, another signal to input 2, and so on.
    And there you have it.

    • @kauwgomboom
      @kauwgomboom Год назад +1

      Yes you can sort of fake it with multiple mixers. But the genius of the A-138m is the bipolar/unipolar switches and the fact that the first ‘channel’ is an offset with nothing patched to input one. These are great touches that set apart the A-138m from many other matrix mixers :)

    • @flourfree2K
      @flourfree2K Год назад

      @@kauwgomboom Of course, if can avoid fakin it, it's better.
      #Doepfer makes GREAT modules, often underestimated.
      It's my FAVOURITE manufacturer in absolute terms.

    • @anonymous23.23
      @anonymous23.23 Год назад +1

      @@flourfree2K 4x a-138n + 2x buffered multiple = at least 20hp+ a lot of cables... so no, this module is more efficient and has more flexibility then your suggested alternative... it is also cheaper ;)
