When in high school in the late 60's I was in Civil Air Patrol. At the start of the summer we would put the Squadron L4 on floats and launch it from a trailer towed behind a vehicle. At the start of Fall, they would land it on the grass between the runway and taxiway at Springfield Airport after it had been wetted down. Cool stuff.

Years back I had a chance to buy a J 3 and opted for a aeroca sedan a 4 place, And it gave me a lot of experience of flying a tail drager, But looking back, I wished in some way i had bought said, since most people do not want to fly in a small plane, and yes I would have put it on floats back then, and enjoyed the places one could go to enjoy good fishing and hunting Your still a young man to enjoy such wonders where many others will never get a chance to even get up in a plane, I assume you probably had plenty of real thrilling and scary moments as I have had, Just enjoy it while you can, and give those who can't afford to fly a chnace to enjoy the thrill. And remember those who boast as pilots, need the H scared out of them, My good friend now deceased, was probably one of the best stunt pilots in his J 3, and when he took pilots up that would boast, I have to laugh, they filled their pants and he humbled them I never got that from him, as I would always ask how do you do this or can you show me, What a pleasure to be humble.
Hey thanks for your kind words and wisdom, I couldn't agree with you more. My Dad, a lifelong pilot, used to say "Experience is the thing you get the moment after you needed it most". We can never stop learning from those who have more experience. By the way, did you notice the two Sedans at the dock at the start of my video? They are amazing airplanes, one belongs to my brother. He could have 4 people in his and I would have 4 people in my Cessna 180 when I had it, and the Sedan would be off the water before the 180 every time. Cheers, Dundee.
@@flyingdundee43 No I did't notice, but my friend was an aerplane machanic, and he spoke highly of my sedan, and at one time I thought of modifying it with flaps, but there was no need of it, because i became very proficient sideslipping, at the penticton airport, an a lot of pilots were scared to fly with me except, those who took the time to really learn, Always keep the nose down, in all manouvers, and you will always come out smelling like a rose, using the rudder,
J3 One of my favorite planes for sure! I like the video very much; you covered a lot of angles there with the video, that was very nice! I used to do lot of recreational flying and commercial early on in 80's, sometimes I took my very heavy VHS movie camera, yes, when I could carry the weight ahah; gave it up, slowly, after turning 60 and couple health probs. Ultralight flying on Full Lotus floats was my favorite fun thing to do and on powdered snow a lot of times! Still look when I hear someone buzz home! Doing drone flying myself now to stay sane, have a a few of them and fav is the DJI mini at this point. loads of fun! The videographer you had doing your drone shots is impressive with the gear he has and I know the "sky is the limit" to what you can do with those drones today......deep pockets you need though for sure and follow the TC rules to the tee, always someone watching today eh? You know, it dawned on me that I don't recall seeing a J3 Cub land on any thing but grass or water and often on snow ! They only made 20 odd thousands of them ! Ask any pilot if a J3 can fly ! I've even seen one with a snowmobile tied to it's floats ! A fun plane if ever there was one.

My dad did it every year, he’d go from the river to the field to put on his skis. Then in late March he’d land on the river and beach it up on shore on the snow so floats can get out back on in spring. Never thought to video it.
Love the J3!! I worked at Austin Airways in Timmins in the late 70s, and that's the procedure we used every fall to bring the Beavers and Otters back to base for conversion to wheel/skis. Thanks for bringing back memories! Oh - do you use a "launch dolly" to get airborne in the spring? We had a few adventures with ours. LOL! Best wishes to you!

When we launched Beavers and Otters in the spring, occasionally our dolly would have some sort of "excursion" and either take out a runway light or proceed to the *FAR* end of the runway when the brake malfunctioned. I doubt a J3 would have had enough power to move ours, though. Best wishes to you!

Very cool. My first thought was that can’t be good for it. But then pretty rapidly replaced by well in the really early days lots of planes had skids. Either tail skids or a main skid. So it definitely isn’t an impossible use. I guess it’s only going to done once a year then it’s not going to shorten it’s life much if at all.

Great question David, Technically just a seaplane rating because landing floats on land is still operating a seaplane. Obviously, once wheels are installed that changes. Your question is worth more research on the topic, thanks for asking.

Absolutely nothing, but you slide on the ground much farther. If you want to see a float landing on snow check out my video "Grassy Landing on Floats". The reason I prefer not to is that you must wait for snow. Floatplanes sitting in the water can't take much snowload before they sink. Cheers, Dundee.

This is literally how you do it. When you need to do maintenance, or switch back to the wheels, this is how you do it. When you need to take it back off again, you launch it off of a trailer towed behind a truck.

You are correct...in a perfect world. There are two problems though; you slide much farther with very little directional control (unless the snow is deep) and, floatplanes don't like a lot of snow load on the wings while sitting in the water waiting for snow to accumulate on the runway. The back yard in New Zealand gets a bit like that after some heavy rain. Not sure whether takeoff would work, though.

Used to work in Northern Ontario and every fall the Norsemans and Beavers in Red Lake would go through the same cycle.

What is wrong with landing it on some snow with floats
Absolutely nothing, but you slide on the ground much farther. If you want to see a float landing on snow check out my video "Grassy Landing on Floats". The reason I prefer not to is that you must wait for snow. Floatplanes sitting in the water can't take much snowload before they sink. Cheers, Dundee.
How do you go the other way, from wheels back to floats?

It;s normal practice, so the only issue would be landing on tarmac instead of grass.
This is literally how you do it. When you need to do maintenance, or switch back to the wheels, this is how you do it. When you need to take it back off again, you launch it off of a trailer towed behind a truck.

I don't know anything about flying float planes but I think I would rather land on snow than grass am I wrong?
You are correct...in a perfect world. There are two problems though; you slide much farther with very little directional control (unless the snow is deep) and, floatplanes don't like a lot of snow load on the wings while sitting in the water waiting for snow to accumulate on the runway.
