  • Once our Sappers have completed basic, combat engineer and trade training, they also have the option to specialise. One of the specialisms is to become an @airbornesappers.
Our 'airborne sappers' are trained to provide close support and engineering to other airborne elements within the British Army. This may include close support to special forces or engineering support to other parachute regiments!
The maroon beret is not just given! The entry courses are extremely difficult and only individuals with the right mind set will succeed!
For more information about this exciting specialism or our other specialisms such as Commando, diver, bomb disposal & search or armoured engineer, please visit

Hi George, we have Commandos, Divers, Armoured Engineers (tanks & automated tracked, bridge vehicles), Bomb Disposal & Searchers and obviously all of the regular trades for which I am a carpenter! Obviously, it depends on where the Army is at the time, but Sappers see close combat more sometimes, as we tend to be upfront supporting the front line units - we are classed as close support units. Even if you specialize, you will still have the opportunity to do the bridge building etc (combat engineering). The only one you wouldn't as much is Bomb Disposal & Search. Good luck and thanks for the interest.

All sappers are duel rolled. You train for a trade. Carpenter, bricklayer, plant fitter, plumber, surveyor. All the building trades. You will become the army’s builders. But first you are a soldier trained to fight as part of the army’s teeth arms. Infantry, armoured, Engineers, Artillery and Signals. You will train to be a combat Engineer. Deny the enemy routes with mines, demolitions and obstacles, bridge demolitions. In advance you will clear mines, obstacles, provide drinkable water. You will be right at the front. When everyone gets a rest you work, you will build accommodation, trenches and fortifications. You will need to be fitter and stronger than the rest of the army because you will always work when everyone rests. But you will serve in a corp for the rest of your life even when you have left. Hurrah for the CRE. Ubique.
