The guy with the toughest job is the one on the French horn at the beginning of the finale. Everyone is on the edge of their seats listening for him, and they all instantly know it if he messes it up.
Normally yes, but in this case some engineer who doesn't get the piece cranked the sound way up during the string setup, so it's like a military band exploding on the scene when the horn comes in.

like the 'power' in this version...it is this directness i find so intoxicting about Stravinsky...and the ballet basis keeps it moving regardless of the story it evokes...and yes...now i do know 'how to dance to the Firebird' yes the non ballet moves..for that there is this incredible Russian movie 'Return of the Firebird' perhaps the most magical ballet i have ever seen....

Wow, I can't believe how short the quarter notes are on the Allegro non troppo section (minute 21:43)! The original score calls for marcato! This sounds more like staccato to me! The complete opposite of Abbado's tenuto style (search on RUclips for "Stravinsky: The Firebird / Abbado · Berliner Philharmoniker"). I am of the opinion that the articulation should be neither short nor long, but separated as indicated (marcato). Valery Gergiev is by no means my favorite conductor when it comes to conducting gestures, style, and technique, but his interpretation of this Allegro non troppo with the Vienna Philharmonic seems to me to be more accurate in terms of articulation style (search on RUclips for "Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird - Gergiev" and go to minute 44:37). Anyway, that's just my opinion.
