  • The Britannia Copper Mine is over 100 years old and has since been turned into the BC Museum of Mining. It is a huge and beautiful building with a really unique tour that takes you through the old mine shafts and shows you some of the original machinery. Want to feel like a gold miner? They have gold panning as well!
The mine is on Highway 99 between Vancouver and Whistler and is worth a visit.

Nice video. My dad was born there in 1920. My grandfather was the manager of the mine store at Britannia Beach. They were there for about four years. My dad's older brother went to the elementary school there. When my grandmother became pregnant with my aunt, she insisted they move back to Washington. I recently sent the museum a box of all the photos from their time there. My grandmother wrote under each photo where, when and who was in the photo. I hope someday I'll be able to get to see the mine. On my bucket list.

Both my Grandfather and Father worked for some time in this mine. My understanding is that during its peak, it was the largest producer of copper in the world. Thanks for the memories.

Didn't they have special mining lamps in 1904 that could provide plenty of light but wouldn't ignite flammable damp? I recall such a specialized lamp being invented in the late 1800's but can't remember the name.

Yeah, it was cold in the mine, but it was hot outside.
We had a really good time, though.
