      I am having the same problem with that hum the thing is I did not have that problem before. I have 3 amps a epiphone studio acoustic 15 a crategx15R and a crate fxt30 the fxt30 is the worst. (acquired two days ago)I am wondering if the first two got the humming due to being idle several months and somehow components are dirty? I did not have any problems with fluorescent lighting. Any ideas besides buying the Hum X?Thank you

    You can also strip a wire, tape one end to one of the screws and let the other end touch the ground. Maybe your amp also has a grounding pin for this. This way, whenever you put your amp on the ground, it's grounded. I super glued a grounding block so that part of it touches the ground when I keep it, and connected a wire to the block. Slightly less dangly solution. :)

    Thanks for this video Bob, I wish my issues could be resolved this easily. I’d gladly spring for the $80 for every amp I have. I not only get the type of 60 cycle hum you demonstrated but I also get static and radio frequencies. Turning up to higher volumes makes the issues especially bad and connecting boost/overdrive/distortion pedals at even medium volume or output levels is disastrous, as it totally exacerbates the problem at ear splitting volumes. It’s virtually impossible to play under these circumstances if I need to crank my volume or pedal output levels. I primarily play vintage sixties Fender amplifiers and guitars and use good quality cables and connections with grounded power strips. Some of my amps have the original 2 prong power cords and some have updated 3 prong cords. I moved from a house to an apartment building and experienced this in both locations. My work around for this has been to keep my amp volume at as minimum levels as possible and utilize my guitars’ volume control which is somewhat limiting. With pedals engaged I found I could reduce the noise to an extent by keeping volume/output levels at bare minimum levels which of course limited my ability to get the full scope the pedals offer. I’d initially thought it was issues with the pedals and certain pedals exacerbated the radio frequencies for some reason but I’ve discovered that the source of the problem begins with the amplifiers themselves irrespective of the specific guitar, amp, pedal, cables, connections, room, outlet or power supply utilized. The reason I doubt this issue is a ground loop the way you’ve described it is because the noise and radio interference occurs on its own upon plugging in any amp to any outlet in any room and running up the volume. This is without even having a guitar or pedal connected. Since you indicate ground loop issues are the result of more than one item connected to the same circuit, having this type of noise from the amp with nothing connected to it indicates it is not ground loop related and the Hum X would not resolve the issue as others here have found. Does that sound correct?? For alternative solutions I’ve researched that the Furman SS-6B power block for $39 also provides EMI and RFI noise reduction that could greatly minimize this type of problem but I see others have not always found that to be the case. Another item is the Furman AC-215A Power Conditioner for $229-$239 which seems to be primarily marketed as a power surge protection product with AC noise filtering technology included as an added benefit. There were positive reviews indicating it did just that and resolved their noise issues. Dropping $40 on an extra power strip is not really an issue but I’d hate to spend nearly $250 on a surge protector I’m not even in the market for to fix my noise issues and then have it end up doing little to nothing. Do you think I’m on the right track here or that the problem is solely within the electrical wiring set up in my house or apartment and if that’s the case then what exactly is the issue and how can I potentially get it corrected. I am not an electrician but if I knew what the issue was and what needed to be done, perhaps I could hire someone to do it. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    HI yall, I use single coils so i get hum, one thing helped ( i think it was ground loop noise...): I put all the pedals and the amp into the same power outlet from the wall, another thing is on the way: EHX Hum Debugger, which is designed to help with single-coil hum, so there! ( I dont like the sound of the noiseless pickups so much, lets see what the Debugger will do...!!!) of course I could buy minihumbuckers, but for my three superstrats it would be very costly (six pickups!), instead of that i have yet another thing coming: Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster for humbuckish tones! so, all in all I have six pedals each having their own adapter , not too much methinks ... ( omg some people have amp stacks, but you have the effects stack!!! im so happy with my six pedals on the floor, like 40 € each, Duncan and EHX over hundred, hope theyll do their job...) Happy humming your favourite tunes...!!!

    You mentioned a light dimmer. I turned off the closest dimmer, and 50% of this exact same noise you’re having disappeared. I reduced a 30% by turning down the treble just a bit on the amp, and another 20% by turning down the volume down on my guitar. Much less noise when using more of the amp’s volume than using the one of the guitar. When I touch my strings or my volume knob on the guitar, that helps a lot too! I’ll visit my guitar shop for possible solutions. I’d rather have a professional to help. His advice is free anyway.

    Bob, I have a brand new Marshall DSL 40c Tube with a brand new Jackson Soloist Pro guitar. I know it is not my equipment because I have no static hiss at my friends house and it's brand new (less than 1 week I have had it)
    My problem is not that I get a hum. The problem is I get bad Hiss. On the clean channel it is not as bad, but when I turn volume up on amp or switch to the dirty channel it is horrible. I run a GE7 Boss EQ as well and the Pedal magnifies this and makes the hiss so bad I can't even use the pedal at all. I noticed if I unplug the power adapter from the wall going to the pedal it gets better. I am plugging amp and pedal into same outlet. Amp on top and pedal on bottom. I tried plugging in the pedal to another outlet across the room and it made the amp worse still.
    This pedal works fantastic at my friends house and not an issue. Now I know it is not just the pedal. The problem is still in the amp when it is plugged in without pedal, but it just isn't quite as bad. It has to be a issue with the power in my house cause everything sounds fantastic at my friends. Also I just ordered a Line 6 Helix so I'd really like to get this fixed so I can record with it.
    Will the HumX work for bad Hiss or just hum which I don't have? Also could it be that my problem is not a ground loop, but a voltage problem. Do I need a voltage regulator? Or will this HumX work for my situation?

    • @BobSell
      @BobSell  7 лет назад

      Justin, the HumX is only for ground loop problems with USA 110 volt power. To test this get the 50 cent adapter to lift the ground that I show in the video and plug in your amp. Just don't play your guitar to avoid the shock hazard. My guess is you have other issues with the power in your house. Talk to the folks you bought your new amp from and they may have some suggestions for using other types of power filters. Good luck.

    Since it's only a 10W amp it lasts quite long enough.

      Elbee Thrie He never said fliiping the off switch was any different from unplugging it. He was talking about powering the amp down first. I once shattered the tubes in a Dual Rec by just turning the amp off without putting it on standby first. May want to read a little more closely and make sure what people are saying before just commenting and jumping to co conclusions.

      KC,
      If your tube amp has a standby switch, you should ALWAYS use it before shutting down. The damage DOES NOT come from shutting down, but from turning it back on, subjecting your tubes to high voltage B+ (325-450VDC) before they are warmed-up.
      I come to this wisdom from using high-powered tube transmitters since 1962. Read your amp users manual, I'd bet that is what it says. If you don't mind retubing frequently, go ahead and fry tubes (but please DO NOT touch my amp). Frying a set of finals might give you a more psychedelic performance on stage.

    I don't have a hum, my amp sounds more like wind or air even at low volume. It's the not the guitar because I have another amp and it's quiet on that amp. I replaced all the capacitors and still the air sound. I also tested the speaker, not blown. It's an older Solid State amplifier from the early 70's, so I was told that's the way those amps sound. if I turn the volume up high, I can't really hear the air sound, but at low volumes when I play clean I can hear it. The amp is a Univox

    I have no ground wires on any outlets. My electrical BOX is grounded. But the wire they ran in my old house has no actually ground hooked to any of the grounds in the outlets. I did build one for my expensive computer/stereo/tv equipment by drilling a hole in the wall, using a thick wire and running it from ground on the outlet into a metal stake in the ground. But I have a lotta noise in my music studio, and no ground. And where the outlets are, can't really make a custom ground easy. My half stack will just HOWL violently at high volume when not strumming.

      Bob Sell ah, that's a bit better, iamazon is where I checked, a fee seeing price decided it could wait lol. I did not look into their alt. Buying options... And as for my second comment ( an I'm directing this towards everyone else ) I am NOT suggesting anyone whom is uneducated it electrical matters to go ahead an try a diy with something like this. I myself have gotten into making fx pedals an am looking towards a boutique tube amp build in the near future... It is a great idea I am assuming is/ was yours. An if it works, hell, I can think of a hundred times it would have helped my old band. From practice in various places to studios to clubs an venues! Lets push it deeper into the market so we can can get that price down. You can sell a thousand an make gross $75,000, or sell a million at $25, an well... You where where I'm going with this. If its attainable to kids in their bedroom, it could become a staple piece of equipment as common as wall warts ( plugbars, whatever terminology you use lol)

    the surest way to eliminate a ground loop is to ground each component in your guitar to one common ground called (star ground)...avoid grounding in a daisy chain fashion...

    Thanks alot for the video. We just played a gig in a park and I was really frustrated with the hum noise. I brought a wah wah and Univibe and they really intensified the hum, so much so that I just went straight through the amp (DSL 40c.)I use effects pedals when we play indoors and usually do not notice as much hum.None the less I will try this and let you know how it works.

    Was this a paid for advertisement for Hum X? Were you compensated in any way to endorse this Hum X product?

    • @BobSell
      @BobSell  4 года назад +1

      This was not a paid advertisement. If you follow my channel you know that I only recommend products that I use myself in the studio. Nor was this product given to me for free to review. I paid the retail price for this product. I've had several products sent to me that are junk and I refuse to review. Recently, I was offed a product for free if I agreed to review on Amazon. I declined as I only review products that I can recommend and use myself. Having said that, this product has a link in the video description and if you click on the link and purchase, I do get a small commission from the sale. I think it's around 5% from Amazon. Thanks for the question.

    I have the 60hz hum on my 25R Fender amp just from the guitar to it. I touch the strings on the guitar, and it goes away (or any metallic part of the guitar). I checked and the ground from the cord has continuity to the input jack so I am stumped. Since it is just the amp there can't be a ground loop so even more stumped.

    Two nooby questions. What is a ground loop and what does lifted mean?

    • @BobSell
      @BobSell  7 лет назад +1

      It's more technical and complex than I can explain so you can do some research if you need more information. But in its simplest form, here's the best I can do: most of your equipment will have a third prong on the cord when you plug in to a power outlet. The third prong is connected to a ground that it's there for your safety. When connecting two pieces of equipment together, like with a guitar cable, that both have a ground can create a ground loop. A ground loop creates noise and interferes with your audio. Some folks will "lift" the ground by using an adapter or cutting the third prong off of the power cord. This is done in an attempt to rectify the noise problem. Most of the time it works by illuminating the ground loop and therefore the noise. However it's a very dangerous option as it creates a shock hazard. Hope this helps.

    I have atrocious ground loop hum at my amp's input, when i use the dirty channel. It goes away completely when I use a wireless system. But when i use any cables with any guitar, doesn't matter if there are pedals in between or not, there is atrocious hum. it's not an amp issue because the noise goes away completely when i use a wireless pack. there is some kinda ground loop happening whenever i use physical cables of any kind and it's driving me crazy because i can't use wireless with everything i want to use. If I go wireless to my pedals, and plug the pedals into the amp with cables the hum returns. please help

    Hi Bob, The thing is I have a lot of amps. I have a Mesa Tremoverb, a Fender Bassman, 1965 Fender Blackface Bandmaster, tweed Deluxe, Ceriatone JTM45 bluesbreaker, Ceriatone HRM Dumble amp, and a Vox Brian May special Edition amp from 2005. All of these amp get this same sound happening. I have 2 strats and 4 les pauls . It's definitely not a guitar or amp issue that I have. For a while I was changing valves like crazy, still didn't get rid of this problem. Really don't know what to do.

    Well, my buzz issue lead me to this video however in the end I found it was my lead. A quality lead I had for ages but something’s gone wrong as an exactly the same lead got rid of 90% of the noise. I wonder what could be wrong with that bad lead. All of the soldered connections are healthy!

    • @BobSell
      @BobSell  6 лет назад +2

      I guess that proves that a quality lead can go bad after ages. Maybe enough strands of wire broke in time to create the noise. Obviously you identified the problem and replaced the cord.
