can't imagine having to go on stage immediately after dealing with this fucking guy, at least he digitized his tape lol
No doubt! I need a xanax for him
I'm only 8 minutes in, and I can't believe this guy hasn't been knocked out yet.
cameraman never dies
meth is a helluva drug.....
the guy is a pain in the ass, but if it wasn't for him we wouldn't be watching this great gig. The definition of mixed feelings right now.
This story so easily could've been 'SOAD members gig canceled tonight after members of the band were arrested for suspicion of homicide after a young fan with camera made them snap '
John is such a great drummer. He hits and grooves hard.
Play hard and hits hard it's not a measure of excellence
@@MultiEchelon Oh, sure. But he does has the ability, he is a pretty skilled drummer, i think i've almost never seen him miss a beat, he is his own metronome and he has such a good taste with fills and grooves. He also hits hard too, while it isn't a measure of excellence it adds a lot of power and rhythm to the songs.
@@HeavyRaiden Don't feed the trolls. You're absolutely right, John is a monster. Bashes the fuck out of his kit and doesn't miss a beat.
@@khall187 Hell yeah brother, one of my favorite drummers for sure, and he is probably the most talented musician in the band, too lml
the sound is clipping to all hell, but you can tell the energy of the playing and singing is just next level. The playing is so tight. Wish I saw them in this era
I remember seeing them in Denver around 99 or 2000? When they still did the face paint... it was pretty amazing...
I saw them for the first time in 1997 at a small club in Sacramento. They played last and there were only like 20-30 people there by the time they played and they put on a show like there were thousands. My 17 year old brain was blown away. At the time they only had 3 songs on their website and I played them for everyone I knew after that show. Still one of the best live performances I have ever seen. I got to see them at the same club a few more times before they really blew up. Incredible!
I saw them at Ozzfest 2003 Donnington Park so roughly 5 years after this gig, very similar energy, similar set list with tracks from Toxicity blended in too 🔥👌
I was at this show. You can see on the door that this is the Clutch/Slayer tour. The first System of a Down album hadn't even been released yet (2 weeks later) and you can't get more of a trial by fire than opening for Slayer. I doubt that more than a handful of people know who they were.
@@Polyinstrumentalism I saw them open for Clutch in Sacramento in 1998 as well. No Slayer though. It was an odd pairing on paper but Clutch and System was a great show. I have also seen Clutch with Primus on the same bill and thought that wouldn’t work and it did. Clutch can get in anywhere.
When soad played with fear factory jan 99' here at the birch hill, I was working the show. We were there all day. Made friends with these dudes. Nice guys. When ff was onstage, me and serj were smoking a three foot bong on the bus. He was talking about space. Then the flashing lights happened. So we went out to see what happened. I think the Fire Marshall pulled the fire alarm because there were too many people inside. Everyone was evacuated, and we weren't able to load fear factories truck till like 1:00 in the morning.. I think that was the night Fear Factory's 18 Wheeler was stolen. Along with all their equipment.. birch hill was a great venue, I was there for so many amazing bands. Marilyn manson 96, meshuggah, propain, life of agony, type o negative, king,fate...we even played with stuck MOJO there. Great times and stories.
I wonder what would be like being there seeing those bands still in the underground venues, to watching something quirky and fucking cool rise to stardom
Oh man...Pro-Pain. I listened to them shortly after being introduced to Slayer and Pantera.
Musta been cool smoking with serj bro
@Kelly Rabon yeah it was, kinda just chilling w an up and coming band. You never know who will be well known. Just really nice people from out of state asking about the area.
As a kid from Red Bank, what a venue. Sad it closed so early in my teens I didn’t get to see enough shows there. I always wish I could have seen TOOL on Aenema tour there.
09:46 Show Begins
11:55 Know
14:47 X
17:00 Suite-Pee
19:38 Sugar
22:12 DDevil
24:06 Mind
29:20 War?
32:12 Darts (Cut)
I didn't know X went back this far. Sounds great thank you
Good ole days
Is that title correctly? I'm 100% sure the song I heard is off S/T and I'm personally convinced "X" is around "Jet Pilot" and "Prison Song" somewhere, in the first half of the second album
Yeah they were gassed with a 30 min show, imagine what they just accomplished recently at sick new world with a 31 song set list! These guys are amazing!!! I am honored to be able to watch that in Vegas 2023
I saw them in 2006 and was blown away by how heavy they sounded. They were the best live band i ever got to see.
I also saw them in 06. Before the hypnotize album came out. Was the best concert I’ve ever been to
@@Automotive_Intervention *Hypnotize* came out in *’05.*
@@mid-s_to_earlysViBEZ you are correct. I found my ticket the other day and it says October 12 2005. I always got the year mixed up. I was in middle school at the time as well back then
@@Automotive_Intervention *All good, my brother, just wanted to make sure, you got your memories correct.*👌 *I was in middle school, around a similar time, (2006-2008), and I just remembered the album came out around when I was in 5th/6th Grade (2005), JUST CAN’T REMEMBER THE EXACT DATE.* 😅
@@mid-s_to_earlysViBEZ same. Been to so many concerts it’s hard to remember the exact date without seeing the ticket anymore. Saw them recently at T-Mobile arena in Vegas. Took my wife. Again awesome
This was before the first album was officially released btw
didn't know that they were already writing and performing tracks that would end up on Toxicity at that point
@@Jaketin "X" was commonly played in the early days
@@Jaketin "36" too
Ya I saw them play X in 98
This guy must be the inspiration behind darons shenanigans on stage
This guy is way more of a tryhard, he tries so hard to be funny and fails most of the time. To much screaming and same thing over and over again. He's like some disney side show jar jar binks, juggalo rapping clown.
Backwardness or stupid?
I remember being at this show. Nobody knew who they were (their first album wasn't out yet)...and before they took the stage there was one guy who knew who they were who described them as "Mr. Bungle meets Slayer." It fit. They won the crowd over, which isn't easy when everyone is there to see the other two, well-established bands.
S.O.A.D is so fricken good. I grew up in this Era, and I regret not seeing them back then.. Their energy is next level. Especially this early stuff.
Cocaine is a helluva drug😳
Love when YT randomly recommends me videos that can be anywhere from 1month to 12 years old
Seeing the band so candidly during this timeframe is one of the most fascinating things I've seen on RUclips.
Especially seeing it through the eyes of an autistic psycho. Unbeatable.
@Vance Walton Every Adam Sandler character rolled into one
This killed me
😂😂😂
Dude went quiet af after they played probably thought he was crazier than them and got humbled
It's always rad to see a band like this right on the cusp of breaking out. I've seen System play multiple times (first time '99 maybe), but right now you're seeing 'em super hungry. There's a pint of blood on that stage.
Exactly..
It would be awesome to travel back in time and seeing them live in 1995-1999 era
You can tell it's early because Daron is still using a Stratocaster, the Icemans didn't roll in yet.
You can tell it's early because they asked Daron's name.
@@someguyontheinternet2714 and mistakenly called him Gary
Gary Malakian lmao
@@layerpwho doesn't love Gary Malakian from SOAD? 🥰
Dude is a legend for recording this, this is historic content
What a wonderful performance
3:42 You know you're truly a crazy mf when Daron Malakian says it
Lmao you can tell that guy was annoying the hell outta the band members
FR ahahahaha😂
Not only out of the band members 😅
A total pratt
Who?
@@mortenmuller9674 Pratt, you filthy Pratt
did that guy really out-crazy darron😳
Hilarious 😂
😂😂😂
Yeah but only by a couple beers
Wow! I feel honoured to see SOAD rockin' their asses off in 1998! The spirit of these days was undoubtedly full of inspirational energy! Thanks for uploading this video!
I was at this show. I chatted up the guitar player after the show... so cool. This was either 2 weeks before or after Ozzfest 98. I saw a dude pull up in a NYC taxi cab outside the club and what looked exactly like Zack from RATM, I alwats wondered if it was him or not... WSOU ALL DAY 25 YEARS STILL LISTENING
As someone with down syndrome I can honestly say this rocks...
I would pay 10k to see Serj perform with these moves and those growls again
he doesn't do that any more, does he?
he gets paid more and doesn't do it, why would he do it if you pay less?
He can't do this anymore Jesus he's getting up there-serj is still the man .FUKKIN SYSTEM OF A DOWN ROCKS
@@user-wb4jm7yv5k he's paying a cosmic genie to see it, not Serj
Gay
Absolute chaos, as all good things should be. System is so chill before taking the stage
Thank you to share !
that band is really cool.. amazing footage of an early soad show. thanks for sharing!
I forgot how insane these guys were when they first came out, thanks for sharing this. Saw them in the late 90s around this time at Jones Beach NY, it was unforgettable!
Did anyone actually listen to anything after this..
@@hobo1704 they were headlining a festival, now that I think about it I guess it was closer to the release of Toxicity when I saw them. it was sick!
@@chrisfuryguitarsystem didn’t play jones beach until 2002 im pretty sure, you either must’ve seen em on ozzfest or that Dysfunctional family picnic radio show back then
Daron playing so tight live is amazing to see lol. Saw SOAD live so many times and he was always a mess, still loved it.
And it's pretty much ALL downstrokes. So heavy.
Wow ! Some one has this? This was my first time seeing them . Soad, clutch , and slayer at the birch hill in old bridge NJ . When I tell people I saw this show at birch hill they say holy shit !!!! And that I’m old
Not that old my man, I saw many a great show at the Birch Hill way back when. I remember seeing a very up and coming Lamb of God open for E-Town Concrete, Hatebreed record release shows and Anthrax quite a few times.
@@jameskane7757 birch hill was my second home !!! Slayer sepultura lamb of god gwar Slipknot biohazard chimaira you name it I was there great seeing bands there before they hit it big!
@@jameskane7757how crazy is it Lamb Of God opened for ETC. but in Jersey, at the time, yeah makes sense.
Raw! Love this! Pure energy! 🤘🏻⚒️
i was at this show, it was sponsored by Twizzlers.
awesome show. i do remember the bathrooms backed up and it smelled like doo doo in the venue.
it was still a sight to behold.
😂😂 nice man
Serj is so spot on in this set holy shit
Put this in an archive for future generations to learn and enjoy
X must have been an early unreleased demo. It's incredible to hear this in 1998.
There is an early demo of it
Awesome show. The Birch Hill was a great place to see bands back in the day
Greetings from Los Angeles
Greatest Band ever SYSTEM OF A DOWN ✝️🇺🇸✝️🇦🇲💜
Amazing footage
🤪 "What's your name?"
🤠 "Daron man"
🤪 "gArY?¿?¿"
Ahh yess, my favorite guitarist, Gary from System Of A Down
System of a Clown?
fuck man! I just spat my food out because of your gary comment
bro went straight Donny from wild thornberrys mode at 3:35
Raw. Live Action. So much energy there. Those were the days :)
Love their first album
Level stages are the best. Whilst rubbing shoulders with the best. It's like the live scene in your home town. Nice.
So good. Love the video guy
He's an insufferable c**t.
One of the best places to see a show ever.
Holy sh. It man.. this is like finding gold nuggets .. i wanted to watch all the 90s videos of SOAD
Legends in the making
I miss Birch Hill. Not in Holmdale but was in Oldbridge Nj close to my job. So many great shows there.
Amazing content right here
Wow, never see before this❤
a lot of years ago, and we have this good video now in 2023, after 25 years.
Hot damn - I was at this show! Birch Hill was a pretty awesome venue
It looks like they're opening for someone else. Do you know who?
@@adamrutt5106 at the beginning in the bstage there's the program. soad, clutch and slayer :)
Birch Hill was in Old Bridge off of Route 9, not Holmdel which is 20 mins or so away. Still, great video and I’m glad you shared it.
- What's up bro?!
- Just chilling and...
- Straight up bro! This is the backstage, now I gotta go check out the frontstage!
Saw them on their '98 tour- you instantly knew they were something special/different....
Brilliant!
I can't wait to hit this stage in my life🤘
SOAD en vivo es uno de los mejores conciertos que podes ver , sigo esperando que vuelvan a Argentina 🇦🇷
El mejor público del mundo 👏
Lo más racista que quisiste decir 🤮🤢
Sick material!
As a kid I went to the Birch Hill Nite Club all the time. The first time I ever saw KORN was at the Birch Hill!
The "Very Nice" at 16:58 really marks the era
How so?
que buen documento de video!!! tiene mucho valor
Wow! I was 13 when my dad brought me to this show. Incredible night. The Birch Hill was a great venue while it lasted. There were at least two fantastic shows per month from 95-00. It was in Old Bridge, not Holmdel, by the way. Fellow New Jersey people will probably be the only to care about that distinction 🤷♂️
Middlesex County over here
@@Krooksbane born and raised in Elizabeth here.
sad its gone now, lot of great shows there back then
@@andycrizack for sure, so many highlights over the years. Saw so many bands before they made the big time. Just about every other weekend there was something good going on there.
Spent sooo many nights at this venue seeing amazing bands that were just blowing up at the time for like 10/15 bucks. Linkin Park, SOAD, Staind. Not to mention the local favs like e town or headrush
6:30 Daron playing "blind" for a minute, after mister annoyance asked for korn. ahhaha
Idk how you were able to hear the guitar, but i thank you for the easter egg
Wow, I saw it all, extremely intense despite the quality of the recording, being a soad listener since I was a kid
Daron without a mic is weird and amazing all at the same time. He does crazy eyes better than anyone
I wasn't there but know several people who were for sure....Birch Hill...'98?!?! Yea I remember when this was and remember knowing everyone else was going but me...FML!!! I heard it was INSANE!!! What a great fucking time living at the Jersey-fucking-shore those were fun years in middle school and highschool....Raves(Parties) and really great music from great bands like these guys...AWESOME FIRST ALBUM!!!!
Esto es oro puro
People say this all the time but I was at that show. System, Clutch and Slayer. Also saw them at the Troc in Philly and Irving Plaza in NYC all in the same awesome week. Good times and good memories.
It's crazy they had "X" way back in 1998 🔥 🔥 🔥
This is the 1st venue I've ever been to. I was a little kid. This place isn't around anymore I don't think.
18:00 that bass line sounded like walls was shaking, so dope
the floor was too!
The speech at the beginning of the show is also the opening to the “war?” music video
PRIME SOAD
Would love to go back to this time period and see them perform.
Their live performances are so phoned in these days.
This was the time when they started getting eyes and just a few years later after toxicity dropped they were respected worldwide. Such a unique and unbelievably sick band!!
My favorite Soad LP
great times!
It was in Old Bridge NJ, not Holmdel. I went there a hundred times in the 90’s
i live 30 minutes away from here
25 years away unfortunately
*ЛУЧШИЕ!*
Lucky audience 😭😭
I saw System around this time with Static-Z, head (PE) all opening for Fear Factory.
Fantastic
Serj dancing is everything
Yooo! X was written before the Toxicity album? That’s awesome, such a great song.
Literally was like wtf too haha
they were playing that one in like.. 96, the earliest publicly available SOAD show actually has it in the set
just a random dude that got backstage footage lmao??? how did they let him do that
Feliz de deixar meu único, primeiro e único comentário em um vídeo no youtube .Puta quilariu que show foda!!!!!
Birch Hill was located in Old Bridge, NJ, not Holmdel.
This was the night there was a shortage of coke throughout the tri-state area because some wannabe concert filmmaker stole the entire NY/NJ supply
Birch Hill was awesome when it existed as a concert venue. Also the guy filming this reminds me of J Roc from Trailer Park Boys,
Glad its on film, but need someone to edit that dude behind the camera out. Sorry brah. Kinda surprised no one punched him in the face before the show started. But do appreciate the video.
I’m gonna add to the other comments of “Birch Hill was in Old Bridge, not Holmdel”
And Shavo is a monster on that bass...
Jesus. What a fucking show in that Venue. System , clutch, slayer.
