  • Improper gear break-in procedures may cause overloading and overheating of the ring and pinion gears as well as break down of the gear oil. Failure to properly break-in a new gear set can be identified by inspection, and may void the manufacturer's warranty.

In the background are a lot of repaired or yet to be repaired gears of gearboxes. This means that there is a demand for masters, and this means that it is economically feasible. I can imagine what kind of noise the differential makes after such a repair.

Repair procedure:- 1 Throw everything on the dirty floor. 2 Weld the broken teeth introducing slag, air pockets and splattering the remaining good teeth. 3 Grind the teeth to shape by eye using a coarse wheel and guesswork, don't worry that the original was finished to an involute profile with miniscule tolerances, a mirror finish and heat treatment. 4 Use the youtube revenue to buy a new pinion to install and put the welded one on the shelf to enjoy a good chuckle.

@@00fordxlt This flat out just won't last. There are ways to make a proper new part even if the original manufacturer doesn't make them anymore and I assure you it doesn't involve stick welding. This thing will last for a few hours if is doesn't just explode the moment they start to accelerate the first time, and it's going to take the rest of the parts with it when it does break...

About 20 years ago I used to do hardface welding , on rock crusher machinery They were very thick black welding rods but I can’t remember what materials they were made from . They must be extremely tuff welding rods to cope with the amount of torque those gears are under during operation. As always , Thanks for the vid . 👣🦘.

doesn't make sense. the pinion is surface hardened by high frequency welding, and the electrode of the ordinary electrode will not give the desired strength. Even if you do surfacing with high-carbon steel, then you need to do quenching and tempering.
