    I´m currently playing a Fairy socerer character inspired by dr seuss aesthetics, and have to say that is just wonderfull. It´s irreverent, so fun to play and since i reached 5th level, i´m just standing out during the narrations and battles. So fun to play.

    I’m excited to try it out and am playing with building a Faerie Bard, where all the spells are really focused on buff / debuff / luck or unluck, altering time or altering the flow of magic. So technically a lore bard but the bardiness comes from using speech to play with emotions of PCs and NPCs alike for reasons that can be a little hard for others to follow. The hard part is how to really get into the mindset of a fey creature, since I don’t just want to RP a tiny human with wings. The values and worldview should come across as somewhat alien, and from time to time make other party members feel the hair stand up on the back of their neck, even though she won’t be evil.

    Really enjoyed getting to hear your take on the fairy! Especially for highlighting the use for dex-based melee builds - it seems like a lot of the time flight gets viewed as a waste on them, but it just serves a different purpose. Rather than being a defensive tool (as it is with ranged builds), it shores up a weakness melee has of not being able to reach flying enemies. Being able to flit up and engage an enemy caster in the air, or a dragon strafing the party with breath weapons, is a really handy option to have in the back pocket.
    I'd love to see your take on harengon as well! Especially since that leap doesn't take up your movement for the turn, it's a really great utility tool that slots in on almost any setup.

      This! A maxed Dex melee fighter is only going to be a single point less AC than heavy armor. 1 AC is not nothing, but it doesn't make or break a build either. I've been wanting to build a Fairy Rune Knight, not only for the hilarity of a fairy becoming huge by level 5, but also has a cool story aspect to it (that I won't bore you with on here lol). And making it dex based should work really well by my thinking. Fighters, with their plethora of ASIs, have lots of flexibility in build options and should be a lot of fun and very functional.

    Just my 2 cents on the DMs banning flying races. Low level flying comes with significant extra risk. None of the playable races with always on flying have the Hover feature. Some people don't quite know what that means in 5e. Hover isn't to let you stay in one place, that was an older edition thing. Anyone with flying can choose to move 0 feet on their turn and not fall. that's not hovering in 5e terms. In 5e hover protects you from most of the things that can make you fall. Without it any effect that incapacitates, stuns, paralyzes, restrains, grapples, knocks you prone or reduces your speed to 0 makes you drop like a rock. For low level characters, especially squishy casters, falling from any significant height can be deadly. And if you fall because you were dropped to 0hp while flying, instant death is easily possible. By the time you have the HP to survive a significant fall you would be high enough level that your party could easily have access to the fly spell. In my opinion this is it's own balancing feature that easily pays for the advantages flight at low level gives you.

    • @SkullSplitter
      @SkullSplitter  2 года назад +5

      Thats a great point. I think one of the big challenges with this though is that it's almost certain death for many squishies vs. the threat of death.

    My group first messed around with playable faeries around the time 3rd Ed was half way to 3,5. It was back then terribly OP and gimmicky for some things and very lethal, hard-mode play for others. That was because of the homebrew we ran with. Just a little before WotC anounced Wild Beyond the Witchlight we tried our own 5e homebrew to try and capture our old 3rd Ed faeries' "feel". It can be done, but I wouldn't think Game devs to ever include something not even close to our thing in any oficial supplement.
    Picture a thumb-sized thingy with 50 ft of natural flight and a few minor magics.

      While the druid is wild shaped, they can pretty much only do what the beast can naturally do as per its stat block. If the beast you turned into cannot fly, then neither can you since you basically *are* that beast for the time being. Heck, you can't even do something as mundane as *speaking* while transformed, so flying is right out.

      Which subclass of artificer did you go with? I am trying to decide if I wanna do Armourer as the subclass or not.

    Banning any official race in an official DnD campaign setting is what i would call "self embarassment" to be honest.

      Thats a way. After Tashas, people are just getting characters for the traits. If you modify their traits its not as balanced as it would be otherwise.
