To add another layer to the story of this cocktail; as the story goes in Detroit, it was developed by the head bartender at the DAC. The bar had somewhat of an unruly patron that would frequent the bar, often getting into verbal arguments with the other customers. So the bartender came up with this deceptively potent cocktail to essentially shut him down, and shut him up!
The Final Ward is a great variation of this (coined by bartender Phillip Ward, in Seattle ). Exact same recipe, you just replace the gin with rye whiskey and the lime with lemon.
The Maraschino liqueur is too dominant to my liking. It's a waste to put Green Chartreuse (which is so hard to find these days) and then drown it with the cherry liqueur. When I make this cocktail, I put half as much or even a quarter as much Maraschino as the other ingredients.
Unpopular opinion, but I'm just not a fan of this cocktail. I've found that anything with Luxardo maraschino liqueur in it doesn't work for me. Do you have a hack so I can learn to live it? For example, after hating negronis for a long time, I was told to double the gin and then ramp down over time. It worked! It's one of my faves now. I'm hoping I can do something similar with the last word...
Yes!! Marascino kills every cocktail with it's parfume taste! Try industry sour: equal parts of lime juice, simple syrup, fernet branca and green chartreuse!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Cut back the luxardo to 1/2 oz or even 1/4 oz. I also find that it tends to overpower any drink that it's in. The Chartreuse here stands up to it but just barely.
If you store your spirits in a decanter long term you’ll lose a bunch to evaporation. Also light pollution is an issue but that’s an issue in glass bottles as well and really depends on how you store it
I made this once but just did not like it, perhaps my expectations were not correct because of all the ‘hype’ surrounding this cocktail. I’ll try again and reduce the Maraschino to see if that improves it…
Someone make the Monks happy again so I can get chartreuse! LOL
PLEASE! 😅
Sub with Faccia Brutto Centerbe for the time being
For real. I found one bottle a few weeks back and was elated. Made a Last Word and a Pina Verde back to back!
this is my favorite cocktail. the taste has brought tears to my eyes. (yes i had consumed several at this point)
The Last Word is consistently one of my top10 favourite cocktails. It's so complex and delicious! 🙂

Going to have to try this one..
Thanks for sharing..
Literally one of my favorite cocktails of all time.

Oh man.. definitely trying that.
Haven’t been able to find Chartreuse in forever.

For a second I thought this was the end of the channel itself and I legit got emotional and sad.
Love this one!....I do 1/1/1/1 because math....and alcohol
Mezcal Last Word is a life changer 👀
Naked and Famous. Mezcal for gin, yellow not green chartreuse, and aperol instead of maraschino
Lovely drink that entices people to try other liqueurs. It's always a good conversation starter at the bar!
My standard end of the day cocktail.
This is a great cocktail, especially with an amaretto chaser
Usually you add the booze to the glass first
This is one spicy meatball

What’s your opinion of storing spirits in decanters? Are they only meant for short-term use?

Bro, where's the Murray and ZigZag shout-out?
I find it even better if you reduce the lime to 1/2 oz, original is slightly to sour to my taste
Wow, so it’s basically the platform for the naked and famous but using better ingredients🤯

I too found the maraschino to be overpowering. Maybe it's just me, but I often find maraschino to be too much and always reduce it when I make drinks.
Any recipe that includes green chartreuse- get a different recipe!
