    I've been quite happy with the older X10 generation of this server/chassis with a 35W TDP quad core SoC. Keeps on truckin. Added a couple 40G ports to it for good measure, plus noctua fans and a airflow guide. With the fairly weak noctuas you cannot change up the airflow direction though, fresh air has to go over the sfp+ ports or things will get hottt.

    This is off-topic, but any chance of researching some low-power - long runtime UPSes? I mean, for us folks at home, that don't have a datacenter with generator backup. Especially with the rising of remote work, having uninterrupted internet for your work-day laptop....
    I currently have my fiber modem+APU2+POE switch+2 POE wifis running ~20W on an APC 750VA rackmount UPS, estimating 270-290mins (4h30m-4h50m). I probably could go longer, but even with this setup, the UPS sometimes measure 0W (and estimate 22h).
    For such a setup, of course, I would need more batteries, but I only found 1500VA UPSes have external battery connectors (APCs can use up to 6 extra batteries?). But those I would assume can't measure under 40W and are inefficient at low loads (if you check 2 UPSes which use the same battery, at 50W, the lower VA rated will have a few minutes higher runtime).

    • @ServeTheHomeVideo
      @ServeTheHomeVideo  2 года назад +1

      Slowly we will be adding UPSes. Eaton unit is being tested now. It likely will be a main site only review though

    • @mateiberatco500
      @mateiberatco500 2 года назад

      @@ServeTheHomeVideo Thanks! That's fine with me. I just want to find out about low-power (10-50W, peak 100W) and long runtime (4-5+ hours). The only other thing I could find was an Eaton car battery UPS. But I'm not sure about keeping a car battery indoors.

    • @mrmotofy
      @mrmotofy 2 года назад

      You can consider a sealed Deep Cycle "car" battery style which is fine indoors, for the cheaper end. Then higher end is a 100ah Lithium battery like Ampere Time, Chins, Lossigy or Renogy, generally around $500ish. Then a pure Sine Wave inverter properly sized probably 300w-600w range depending on server size/use. Then a simple automatic battery charger. To make it simpler can get a Victron Inverter that has the inverter/charger all built in and completely customizable. Or get an older APC1500 or something and add the battery to it with some cable extensions.

    Appreciate the vid, however I'm looking at this and the cost and wondering what is the use case for it. The deployments I've been involved with in the past have opted to go with vendor solutions like F5, Cisco etc.. where ( perhaps most importantly ) you can purchase service contracts that will allow the C levels to scream down at support when an outage occurs.
    I'm not sure for SOHO unless there is someone on staff nerdcore enough to snag one of these and plop their firewall vpn suite of choice on it, but aren't there cheaper options ? If you were into PF stuffs, wouldn't the netgate 6100 be cheaper and sufficient option as an example ?
    Also, curious now how units like this rate compared to older gen HPE / DELL 1u servers readily available on fleabay. How do the older gen xeons rate when it comes to this kind of application, what sort of instruction set advances make a difference in handling cryptos etc, what architectural changes might be responsible for improvements to overall latency, or whatever kind of valid metrics for this application.
