  • This solo composition was published in 1910. It was inspired by an ancient Breton tall tail about a cathedral that rises from the sea on clear mornings, then sinks in the evening with its bells and organs being heard over great distances.

The way I heard the legend was this: There was a great city of Ys. Its people were very wicked, and God punished them by sinking the entire city beneath the waves, including all the wicked people. But He allowed the cathedral to rise one day every 100 years and have a service so that the wicked ones could repent and find salvation.

Thanks for the beautiful music. Nitpick: the title should read "cathédrale", not "cathedrále". 😎
