Rowan Atkinson first did this sketch decades ago. One reason the opening applause was so enthusiastic was that, as soon as the audience saw the set, most of them knew exactly what was coming.

A lot of the jokes in there weren't particularly new, when he first performed it in the 1980s, but Rowan Atkinson is very good at tieing them all together and has excellent delivery. His portrayal of Toby as some sort of ghastly package holiday courier is very well played.

  • @dereknewbury163

Rowan Atkinson is one of our comedians who were essentially public (i.e. private) school, Oxbridge (Oxford/ Cambridge) educated comedians who rose to prominence in the 60's and after with the devlopment of satire and then more 'alternative' forms of comedy. Witty and informed, they were once criticised by one of our more traditional comedians as 'now you need a degree to be filthy'. Rowan is exemplifying this excellently in this video as he essentially channels a posh school Headmaster to represent the devil. I note that the Prince and Princess of Wales were in the audience as an indication as to how mainstream this form of comedy has become. I was brought up and became very religious in my youth, even considering thee priesthood, but science and reason happened and I have been a militant atheist since my mid 20's. I respect the right of religious people to hold their beliefs but decry the demands that we respect the religions themselves. My belief is that all religions are crap and to a greater of lesser degree, harmful.

I read it is a charitable performance where profits go to the Royal Variety Charity which Queen is a patron of. The first RVP took place in 1912. Great reaction to a great sketch. I hadn't seen this version before, only the classic 80s version, which is the same as this other than hedgefund managers and Trump. His one man show from the eighties was full of these sketches, he doesn't do stand up, he doesn't interact, he is a comedy actor, rather than a comedian, every word is carefully worked out, how to say it, and time it.Though he did mess up the little guillotine joke , compared to the original. I absolutely LOVE how you react, hahaha. Rowan Atkinson has been entertaining us for decades, starring in everything from 'Not the Nine O'Clock News', (early on in his career), 'Blackadder' ( a personal favourite), Mr. Bean, of course, and the (mediocre) 'Johnny English' the hapless spy. He is up there with Stephen Fry with his oratory skills. I was a committed Roman Catholic up until the age of 16 when I made the decision to quit religion, particularly the RC religion, when I realized for sure that I'm gay ... the Catholic church is pretty clear about its views on homosexuality. I don't mock those who remain faithful to God but I could never be part of an institution that shuns someone simply because of their sexuality. That said, I will not hold back the laughter when a skit like this comes along. Another great choice to react to, JP.

Considering ol' Charlie will become Supreme Governor of the Church of England once he becomes king, though he has made it clear he wishes to be known as 'Defender of Faith' as opposed to his mother who is 'Defender of THE Faith'. Imagine, a divorcee and adulterer being the moral compass for the faithful of the UK! You couldn't make it up, lol.

If you are interested in the relationship of religions through time, have a read of a book titled “The Jesus Mysteries”.

Not religious, but I was a Lutheran, once. Now, I'm an Animist.
If you haven't seen it, you can watch Atkinson in the series that made him famous: Mr. Bean.
