This woke stuff is mostly going to far, I honestly don't care much for it. But if the devs or people related to the game are going around insulting consumers or are openly racist, then I will spend my money somewhere else. Not taking that in consideration if the game has good reviews, has good gameplay and a somewhat good story to complement it, then it's fine by me.
so if a game had a pride flag you wouldn't play it?
Right some of these game devs are openly mocking their own customers but act shock when people don't buy their games.
also, another point that i think needs to be addressed is that not every game that failed is because it had woke in it, just like not every game that succeeded is because it had woke in it.

I think there is different type of connection. Yes, games do not fail bc of woke content itself, but bc modern developers often puting wokeness waaaaaay ABOVE every other aspect of the game they produce. Polar example - Dustborn. Developers tried so hard to represent woke narrative that they forgot to make the game itself.

exactly 0 games fail because they are woke, they fail for a number of other reasons and while in some cases it being "woke"(hate using the word like this bcz the right bastardized the meaning) can contribute to it failing, it is NEVER the reason.
@Malix2238 that's so true, especially in the case of Concord. The game sucked in all aspects of video game making, and people's soul focus was pronouns/dei. it might have contributed sure, but to say that it failed because of " woke " is outright denial of fundamental video game making flaws that it had.
Ive regularly enjoyed games and audiobooks where the author clearly has a different political bent than me - its about whether the work shows a basic respect or whether it bonks me over the head continuously. Also, like Hex said, doesnt help if it just sucks

I don't think you fully understand the notions of what woke is based on your view of Concord not being woke. I agree that first list definitely took things too far, but that doesn't mean some games on there weren't what would be considered woke.
It isn't just about if the game is good or not, it's about how upfront the political messaging is and how based in reality it is. Concord was definitely woke, it featured concepts that barely make sense, made male characters all meek and pathetic, or overweight and "nonthreatening", while most of the females were all girlboss archetypes that were tougher than everyone else on the roster and came off more masuline than the males. It was a concept baked into the entire game, putting it all front and center. And also wasn't good from a gameplay perspective. Plus the dev team kept going onto social media to promote those themes constantly and attack anyone who didn't agree with their view as bigots and other similar monikers. Which didn't help the outlook of the game and also brought more attention to the nature of the project itself.
Baldur's Gate 3 had a lot of inclusion throughout, but it wasn't the central premise of the game. Did you want to play as a masculine white man that could get any woman he wanted? Go for it, it's all you. Did you want to be a queer character that doesn't fit in a particular box? Go for it. You could do what you wanted and regardless of your choice, it wasn't shoving the other themes down your throat. You only experienced the themes you chose to embrace, and the narrative itself had no direct messaging along those lines. Any of those "woke" concepts were only if you chose to have them involved in your game, none of them were forced.
A game can be good and still be considered woke and hated on by those that are anti-woke. The game popularity isn't necessarily a direct factor. It's how intent the narrative and gameplay is in advertising those messages to you and forcing you to listen as you play.
Games that aren't popular could still not be considered woke. Some games are just poorly received and have little to do with the political themes. It's just poorly designed gameplay loops or bad storylines.
So woke concepts don't directly correlate to success or failure. It's about the game itself and how is presents itself.
I do think people are taking the notion of screaming woke at games and media in general too far, calling anything nowadays with a female protagonist, lgbtq character, or non white ethnicity characters as woke when tha doesn't necessarily mean any of that.
People didn't care about those themes in older titles because it wasn't forcing it down your throat. Lara Croft was a great female protagonist and people don't tout her as woke agenda because her stories were well developed and she wasn't going around insullting every man she encountered as part of the patriarchy, or calling them misogynists. People didn't care about Samus being a woman for the same reasons, she was who she was and her gender had nothing to do with her character. People didn't mind gay relationships in Mass Effect or earlier Dragon Age titles because it wasn't the central theme premise of the game. It was something in the background that you only involved yourself in if you chose to. Many diverse game characters weren't viewed as woke themes in early games because their race wasn't the central premise of who they were. The story had nothing to do with their racial background, it was just a small part of who they were.
It comes down to how the game presents it's story and characters and if they try to force the messaging on you. And it doesn't help that many developers now spend more time hiring activists instead of talented creators trying to make something fun. People who go on social media to force agendas down people's throats or call people out as bigots and racists because someone said something they don't agree with or their project didn't do well. People are too constantly trying to force a victimhood mentality and refuse to accept any opinion that doesn't align with their own without immediately viewing the differing opinion as an attack on them personally. It's a sad state of affairs we find the world in now.
I think when most normal people refer to a game as they usually usually mean a game where the message became more important than the actual substance of the game and the game suffered for it.
I think idiots calling anything with diverse characters or gay characters in it as woke or just morons because there are plenty of games with characters in it that are really solid experiences.

I feel like this list was made almost as a joke because of how over the top it is. That first list doesn't seem genuine at all.
The reason changing body types feels unnecessary is because it's clear that 'Type 1' or 'A' is typically male, and 'Type 2' or 'B' is typically female. Games like Dark Souls, which also use these labels, still allow for extensive character customization-skin tone, height, facial features, and more. So at that level of flexibility, renaming body types seems redundant. Personally, I don't care much about it, but for those who say 'it's not a big deal,' my response is, 'If it's not a big deal, why change it at all?

My issue with using terms like type 1/2 instead of male/female is that it ignores real differences in skeletal structure and musculature. For example, a broad-shouldered woman has a different build than a man with the same shoulder width. These label changes don’t feel grounded in reality. Also, most character creation systems lack range. I should be able to create a wide variety of body types, but they often don’t even reflect the actual diversity of people. For instance, many men’s options lack common hairstyles, beard styles, or body hair settings. On the women’s side, there are body types that are simply not represented. My family has women with taller, stronger builds due to farming heritage, while other families I know are much more petite, yet neither are well-reflected in character creators.
Edit: I should mention that every character creator with sliders should let me create a monster if I so choose.
Character creators with sliders should be rated on a scale of 1 to ARK: Survival Evolved

To your first thing about people not playing the video game because of these issues. Didn't dead rising remaster the game everyone even people from Japan complained about how censored it is which was the main controversy about the game only so far sell 66k copies? I’m my opinion, the game is “woke” when agenda comes first, at the cost of the game quality. Or it’s shoved just to be there to virtue signal/to “lecture” the player.
Also, changing things for no reason to push the agenda is up there too.
If you have a shorthand that you use, for example "woke", and people are consistently misunderstanding it and needing you to explain what you mean then it ceases to be a useful shorthand. Especially when it's been picked up by a major political party and being used in the way that you insist you don't mean it.
The problem with "body 1 & body 2" is that men dont have... you know... boobs. Of course there should be customization to alter the body after you choose a base, but male and female body types are very distinct. Elden Ring is good despite having this, not because of it.

if it's something on the character creation screen that you'll only see the one time and has no other effect on the game that makes you quit, then you need to chill out because you've just become what you were fighting against.
The problem with DEI and wokeness discussions is that people do not know the inner workings of the development team. We're just making baseless assumptions that their focus on diversity was the issue, causing them to neglect other parts of the games when there's no evidence to support that claim. Every member part of a developer team works on different things, so why are people so sure of that?

the complaint against wokism, at least in video games is not that there is political stuff in it, but that the political stuff harms the actual game parts of the game, like worldbuilding or escapism or gameplay, etc. For example, the worsening quality of Bioware games coincides very closely with their increased focus on lgbt romance stuff in their games. It's a shift in priorities and hiring of people who don't care about the actual game part of the games but just using it as a vehicle to advance their own political pet issues.
Honestly the whole body type A and B thing is stupid, Sex isn't a social construct, it will always be a Male and Female body. Gender on the the other hand is a perfectly fine addition to any game, and is a social construct, meaning people can be whatever gender they wish to be. Knowing people's gender is pretty useful information to have, I've been berated by people for misgendering them when their gender was not apparent.
the issue most of us have with the woke in the industry isn't the fact that it exists but that developers focus on that above all else. Marketing? we are a diverse team and we have diverse characters. Gameplay? who cares we're diverse and that means more than the actual gameplay. Gameplay, Graphics, UI, well written and designed characters, all of those should be first and foremost when it comes to a game, but these developers put all of that on the back burner to focus on having characters that represent a group of people (usually as a stereotype) and that is their entire character. We have a Lesbian, being a lesbian is pretty much the entirety of that character's personality and character. There is nothing wrong with having representation in games as long as its done right, make the characters good characters and not just as marketing and brownie points.

The reason that games like Overwatch and Elden Ring aren't on the list (the real one) is because just diversity itself isn't woke. Part of being "woke" is also in a sense the spirit or intention of the game like you mentioned at the end. It's more than just a political message. It's "why are they adding this?" A lot of game developers have outright said white males (even just people) are a problem, that they intentionally undermine games to get at gamers or that they outright hate gamers as toxic white males. The core of what is woke is the intention. If the game and/or elements of the game were done out of spite, mean-spiritedness, or outright hate, that will usually come through in the game or developer reaction to criticism and the people being insulted will pick up on that. It's not coincidence that woke games usually suck. If they're doing something to spite the customer, they're not going to do a very good job.

I disagree with the type of type b. Have male and female, and include the options to make your character big or small. For example, elden ring character creator have the options to make your character a certain way. Instead of type a or b put male or female and it would quiet the argument about male and female vs body type a and b. You would still have the options to make your character the way you want while not unnecessarily changing things to appease less than 1% of the population
When you play elden ring do you constantly think your character is trans because a and b thing? Do you know that people like you are also in 1% and changing it now, is would be changing thing for appeasing the minority. So by this logic we should stay using a and b from now on at least with fromsoftware games.
BodyType 1/2 argument is not about bulky-strong vs petit-gentle, its about boobs or no boobs and absurdity of denying the difference, pretty simple really. Both can have bulkiness/fatness sliders

One of the things in particular that always irks me is when I hear the two sides yell at each other: "Keep politics out of art!" Then met by: "Art is always political!"
What annoys me about this is they're both wrong. Yes, not all art is always political (At least not by intent at the very least.) but much of it has been for years prior to this current "culture war"...In the end, the issue with a lot of this stuff today (Be it games, comics, TV/movies...) isn't so much the political side of it...But the art...It's the "art" that is bad.

The issue is that Type A/B or 1/2 are _not_ generic. Type 1 is male and Type 2 is female. In any way that matters, that's how the game treats them. That's what makes it a virtue signal -- it's a meaningless change to a name with no other functional change.
Huh. I never considered that being able to pick a female character, but set your pronouns to he/him could be useful in a multiplayer game. I've had guys hit on me when I played female characters before and it could sometimes get a little awkward, lol XD

I feel like the idea of the “anti woke” in video games relating to things trying to be too diverse that they aren’t able to get it’s story across is still weird and sort of feels odd. There’s always going to be bad games out there and the idea that they’re caused by it being too “woke”, and trying to stop that from happening still feels like bigotry just under a more fancy branding. If I misunderstood what like the whole argument was saying feel free to correct me though.

Even with the "clarification", the argument is still stupid. Not even a month ago, those same guys were crapping themselves over Monster Hunter Wilds getting rid of genderlocked armor (something that's been asked for since at least World, which released in 2018) and the fact that new NPC Olivia actually has the arms to use her hammer.
I would bet money those same chuckleheads wouldn't be screeching about heavy-handed sociopolitical messaging if the game(s) in question were more conservative-leaning (by the way, heavy-handed sociopolitical messaging sucks no matter what color it is or which direction it came from). The difference is that they were making a list of people who were just playing the game. The SBI list is made to point out a toxic group that attempts to insert identity politics into games
Atleast with what's generally considered woke character design (not referring to character creation), I think it's actually the same core problem that we get with things like isekai anime protagonists. Basically, it's an author or creator trying to make a self-insert but they don't really respect the people they are trying to make that self-insert for. So, they make them stupid, ugly, unlikable, weak, scrawny, fat, etc. as a way of making them relatable, as that's the first and central they think of when they think about their audience. Normally, when you write characters that are supposed to be self-inserts, it's usually a slightly idealized version of people, though still with flaws, that then goes through a character arc build themselves up from those flaws. That way, you can make all kinds of designs for different people, just present them in a way that shows a cool or likeable side and build on that.

Your "excuse" for body type is stupid for one single reason. At least that reason is still now. The type is VISIBLY male or female. Most games still show larger shoulder, breasts, bulge (or lack of it). It your explanation was even remotly close, they wouldn't give you a choice, they'll give you an unisex body you can customize. That play on the erasure of the feminine form extremely visible in dragon age veilguard (for the most recent).
As for the list, it feel like it was made by the sinthetic man. It's different from the SBI curator list. That said, I would refer to the interview done by the devs for the remake of dragon quest 3. TLDR of the interview = The US is very frustrating to work with because they find every little thing offensive even sex difference. They had to comply to sell the game and that's it. Games like Elden Ring surely had the same problem and the people making the list don't see the nuances.

@@hexjuice I wouldn't have an issue if they just give me the template and, of course, all the option with it. With exageration. The futur dragon age don't have any of that. It's not even skin deep. Dragon's dogma was much better and cyberpunk had something. In the end, it come to choices : give me real ones or don't.

The only thing i follow is DIE Detected, woke has just become a buzzword people use to attack what they dont like even when the themes are explored in a non patronizing way nor overly avert, but i dont like the idea of helping a game that was delevoped by the likes of Sweet Baby inc simply of my own principles and DEI detected serves best to this end.
This is probably the worst possible list. The person is obviously either hostile or ignorant to even minor inclusions. DEI Detected / SBI Detected is a much better curated list.
I will go into Space Marine 2 specifically. I have not played it, but I am familiar with 40k lore. Games Workshop has gone into DEI by altering existing lore to add female Custodes, even though it's been lore that it isn't possible.
That out of the way... The standard blue armor is Ultra Marines. They are the poster children of 40k, as well as a generic catch all army. While the typical official paint scheme for the majority of the armies is white skin. Salamanders are black with red eyes, this is because of Vulcan's gene seed and influenced by the environment of the home world he ended up on. The White Scars are the Mongol army, I don't know too much about their lore other than Jaghatai Khan is the primarch and they focus on speed, typically motorcycles. There may have been a couple others, but there are different depictions depending on artist and pre / post fall appearances. Vulcan and Alpharius Omegon are the only ones I know of that affect the appearance of their chapters skin and face structure, not including mutations in Space Wolves, Blood Angels, and successor chapters.
Their complaint about the diverse squad is stupid. Humanity is spread out all over the galaxy, and these are apparently the new Primaris marines that Cawl had been working on for 10k years, pulling from wherever to make them. The Imperial Guard, Sororitas, Sisters of Silence, and Inquisition all have prominent female presence, or are wholly female groups. So a female Commissar would not be unheard of, though the official figure is always male.
While acknowledging the review is flawed due to lack of knowledge it was left as not recommended because they apparently can't be completely wrong.
Man I just want my games to be good lol. Companies should be prioritizing fun over, well, pretty much anything else. I do enjoy a good well written story in my games too but ngl, if the gameplay is mid or just flat out not fun I probably won't be getting it. I also really don't mind diverse characters if they're actually written to be characters and not checkboxes. Feels to me like too many modern AAA game companies just want the extra funding so they make characters diverse and forget to actually write interesting and engaging stories for them lol.
Cole from Gears of War is a black man, I am white as all hell (literally I step out into the sun for 10 minutes and I become red as a lobster), and he's one of my favorite characters from the franchise as a whole. He's funny, engaging and actually has great dialogue, and his backstory is great and very well touched on in GoW3 in some amazing ways, even having a sorta flashback sequence in one of the first chapters of the campaign. He's a prime example of a diverse character who is a legitimate actual character. I know I sure as hell can't really say the same for the Saints Row reboot. Although to be fair, every character in that game is obnoxious and just, just, bad. Poorly written all around. The older Saints Row games had some amazing characters like Johnny Gat and Pierce. SR2 is still one of my favorite open world sandbox crime based games I've ever played.
Tl:dr, I just think AAA devs forgot how to write actually good and engaging characters and forgot how to make games fun at the same time.

Its when you make Your game politically correct as you forefront. In Concord case its bad character design was politically driven. Each character had its on pronoun. Why was that needed. The Fat chick design was centered on her being fat as a focus. Why do that if not to fit the body positivity. Not all character tool that route as was just bad and not having 1 sexy character was odd like they activily avoided that. Mei on the other had is fat yes but in a cute chubby kinda way that didnt need to have it be a focus. The body type 1 and 2 is an issue because you'll have a male body type which is clealy male be treated as female and visversa. What should instead happen is male body 1,2,3 and female 1,2,3. That way it fits the different builds of these genders. The body 1 and 2 is a way to please the trans which is pretty clear. That is what I think people a fighting about. Devs are to focus on making their game politically correct that the lose the main point, make the game fun. It also doesnt help when media puts a spotlight on how politically correct it is turn away a players from the start. Concord was champion on how diverst and woke it was that people didnt even bother to play the free beta. But marvel had people fighting to try its beta. Its never about a game having woke things, its why you made it woke that matters.

I'm probably late to reply, and you probably know more about it now. But I will offer my perspective on this as a whole.
Firstly, I think I've seen enough from other video's to just say that the list is BS. It's overwhelmingly just lumping every game by just saying that it has something to do with LGBT or ambiguous to what it's even referring to. And a lot of the games mentioned are probably just to anger and rage bait folk. Definitely upset me.
Secondly, I'm referring from memory for this as I've kept myself entrenched in this to some capacity, but woke isn't particularly something you apply to a game. That's majority for the acronym DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). Their are 2 other acronyms for it which are ESG (Equity, Social, and Governance) and BRIDGE which I can't remember all the words for. The passing around of the word woke is demeaning it and devaluing it's current meaning as to what people are referring to. Woke is meant to be applied to a person and only that.
Thirdly, DEI and woke should be understood as a practice to understand what people are talking about. DEI is nothing without woke and "woke" is a mindset that many including me pin point it down to not ideology but behavior's and value's that shine through in the produced product. The most common pattern or trademark's of what make's a game identified by DEI. The list you saw first is terrible and doesn't explain anything but only has vague lead's. Point's I offer is that you examine if their are-
1. Token character's (one-note)
2. Weird dialogue's (something like the police interaction in DustBorn at the diner)
3. Concord-esk design's (best example I can't think of to supply)
None of this particularly make's a game independently a DEI "score" but I'm recommending to observe them for these sort's of pattern's. It's something I've seen across a lot of not exactly myself, but through many other clip's on RUclips of general entertainment media. Particularly Disney.
Fourthly, it's with this that we derive what was the possible intent that seems to be either to glorify a character off of their singular trait or to (what I find) put down men or "put them in their place" is how I read it whenever this sort of character scenario with the offered "Token" and "Weird dialogue" patterns appear. Rationally, it's not because a of a character's sub-feature's or the prop's and mechanic's that appear along side them, but the rate that the pattern that can be nailed down to a few common point's or behavior's in that media is what build's to the stereotype of "woke" and that's when you determine if some entertainment is DEI.
Appealingly, it shouldn't matter whether it's good or bad. It should be, "does it share these aspect's with this other [insert]", and that's how you should get your answer. But I find it more to be that it's the application that determines whether something is good or bad. And right now, woke are the people that make a DEI game which is majority discussed as bad.
Another thing, DEI detected doesn't determine if a game is good or bad. They recommend or don't recommend based on if a game has had work done on by a consultancy firm or developer's who are identified and referred by us internet people as "woke". If yes, not recommended. If not, recommended. The site is more of a "vote with your wallet" sort thing like how it first started.

The problem here is that people have taken what woke actually was (something that started in the Civil Rights Movement that literally only referred to becoming 'awake' to the way that black people and to an extent other minorities were treated in the US) and twisted it into "thing has Black people or women or a theme that I don't agree with." A lot of people are commenting about "woke is when there's an agenda" and I would ask: how many games have you actually played? How many genres? Because there are a lot of games with "agendas" because the devs and writers have a story to tell. You see this a lot in RPGs where people are tired of "agendas" getting shoved here and there, but RPGs tell stories. Their basis is on story telling and good story telling is trying to get you to see, experience, or feel something. Sometimes that's confronting ideas that are antithetical to your own.
A game generally having the idea that, idk, slavery is bad doesn't make it a bad game because it has an agenda. A lot of games have a general 'moral good' stance (though I do like games that give the option for more nuance or straight up degeneracy, it's still a fantasy/wish fulfillment space after all.)
Like a lot of things, I think it's just easier for people to constantly live off stupid brain rot takes of "thing only bad" or "think only good" based off how much a game adheres to one's preconcieved notion of how they feel the world -should- be. And then something, something, media literacy is dead, something, something people get too pressed over pixels either way.

I would argue that if a dev team and/or a publishing company thinks the only way to make a good game is to have LGBT+ rep, or POC rep, then they're doing the gamers of those identities a disservice, because we deserve a quality product that doesn't have to come at the expense of a lack of diversity.
My issue is with people who see a black character in a game and decide "this is woke, I won't play it." Or, perhaps a better example and a more recent one: Ghost of Yotei having a female protagonist. Despite the fact that the Ghost of Tsushima devs proved that not only can write a compelling story, but can also write good female characters and a whole culture that is not theirs, Ghost of Yotei is already being called woke trash, and the game is not even out. No one has played it yet.
For some background on myself, I am a writer. As in, I write books for a living. I analyze games for their stories pretty often. And something that is consistent across books and games (we'll go with fantasy) is that the real world influences fictional ones. I find it interesting when real world issues stop being acceptable in fantasy settings when those real world issues stop being about white straight men saving the world. And to be clear: I do not have an issue with white straight dudes in fantasy or real life. But if those characters don't have to justify their existence in a fantasy setting, I'm sorry, neither does anyone else.
I do agree that if the character's only trait is "hi I'm the gay one," that's bad writing. Do better. But I would argue so is the white Gary Stu that's a part of so many stories, games or otherwise. The problem isn't the existence of a miniority, it's the lack of writing ability.
TLDR: a lot of these 'issues' boil down to bad writing, not inclusion. These same issues occur in "non woke" media. It's just the people who enjoy "non woke" media didn't care about it. A shit game is still a shit game.

And it’s true in every single form of media. Would the Great Gatsby be as popular if it hit you in the face with its themes? Probably not. The fun of the story is following Nick and his friendship with Gatsby.
Would Star Wars be as fun if it did commentary in the first movie? Probably not.
But when everything is intertwined together it can be more than just a good product. It can inspire people and uplift them. For example, Godzilla is a commentary on the dangers of nuclear weaponry. But it’s also a damn good monster movie.

Yea I feel like the word "woke" has lost all meaning at this point. If you call everything woke then when something comes along that actually does smash you over the head with it people will just roll their eyes if it is called out.
And it also causes issues on the other side. If you have any criticism for a game these days you are almost always labeled as a bigot, racist, or some kind of phobe. And that is just as problematic because it just removes any genuine discussion of a game. Like I genuinely hate how Assassins Creed Shadows looks. I hate how they have thrown the historical accuracy they have had in the past for locations out the window and I hate we are now playing a historical figure. To me that ruins the immersion. But just by me saying this in a public forum I would probably get jumped by people saying I hate the game because a black guy is the main character. And to be perfectly honest I blame gaming websites and journalists for this. They profit off people hating each other and discourse, so they have to make sure it is constantly flamed.
