David your experience was similar to mine. I saw a gold trumpet in my English reading book that said T is for trumpet and somehow I realised I would play it one day and now I love the instrument
Us trumpet players look up to great playing ambassadors of the art to like this gentleman ....when he says something about playing the instrument we listen...when Ben Hogan spoke about golf us golfers paid attention, same with David Bilger when he talks trumpet our ears should perk up.
You talk about transposing; why dont you have the music in front of you written for the key of the trumpet you are playin?. Surely that would make life in the trumpet section easier.

While growing up and playing in church, all we had was the hymnal. So I learned to transpose on the fly - really fast.
Transposition is just another thing to practice and has a lot of applications in development of skills. It’s not really all that hard or mysterious.
