Nice report, Paul. I have around 2000 hours flying the B717. The cockpit is identical to a MD-11(minus one engine), the engines are very powerful Rolls Royce turbofans, however the wing is very old DC-9 design. It climbs out like a bat out of hell but just kind of gives up around 32 to 34000 feet. To make a nice smooth landing you give kind of push the nose down during the flare, it's counter intuitive so until you figure it out some hard landings can be had with this jet. At 10:21 that is Mt. Hood in the distance. Cheers.
Agreed. As a FL Gate Agent I worked, at one time or another, every single 717 we had in the fleet and I was there when Boeing sent one for an employee only preview and event and I was there when we received the very first 717 (formerly the MD-95) to begin revenue service. I was also at a party in MCO hosted by Boeing when we had our 50th 717 delivered which was dedicated to our CEO at the time Joe Leonard. I LUV'd working the 717.
I am sure I'm in the minority, but after liftoff, I didn't like the higher pitch whine of the engine, but as expected stopped at elevation. I had the sensation of "wanting to shift into a higher gear". lol
Just a bit of trivia for you, but many, many U.S. movies and tv shows from the 1970's and 80's were filmed in Terminal 2 in LAX which is now the new home of Delta Airlines. I really enjoyed this latest trip report. Thank you.
A 717... Not often you get to go on one of those, not that many that flies them now. And they are a rare sight here in Europe. Nice to get a trip report on one of these beuaties.
Delta is taking all the 717 they can get their hands on. They’re cheap and easy, so for now they will be using all the 717s that other airlines are retiring.
I love your videos Paul, I also like how you mention what cities and/or landmarks you are flying out. Keep up the great job. I too love Delta, and their ex-AirTran Boeing 717s.
Excellent report. Happy to see a older McDonnell-Douglas MD 82! Those to me will never fall under the Boeing 717 designation. I've been privileged to fly on the MD 82 under US airways. Sad to see those quirky jets fade away to Victorville CA. Resting place for distinguished tired aircraft of yesterday. New to your channel love it can't wait for my lil jaunt to Pittsburgh PA. From twin falls Idaho on a CRJ 200! Delta Connection.
This particular plane (B717 / MD95) is the kind Airbus wanted in the last few years, so they've decided to buy a mayor share in the Bombardier CS100 / 300 (now A220 / 230), which does the same function as the "smaller MadDog". "Frustrated non-buyer's remorse" (now it seems it should've kept making the B717) is the reason Boeing is trying to go after Embraer for them to build a very similar plane as well.
I remembered that I flew West Coast and Air West from PDX to EAT as stop at YKM long time ago in 1964 to 1970 that I looked a lot changed building so big that looked great!
One of my favorite rides in the sky, and I get lots of chances to fly in 717s, as Delta has them running between DTW and MSY pretty often these days. They are very comfy in F or the 2-seat side of C+, Delta has power at all of those seats on every 717, and a pair of good headphones takes care of the fact that it's a little loud in terms of air rushing noise.
I must be spoiled... i want to watch all videos with first service. Lol. I love the landmark features... please linger on the shot longer to take it in. Thanks for the fun.
I subscribe to multiple trip report & aviation channels, & this is officially the 1st & ONLY report vid I've seen involving the 717. I believe I read in ur description that u purposely took this god-awfully early morning flight so that u could fly one of these "rare beasts." If that's the case then I applaud ur effort & I thank u for taking the time to post this one of a kind vid involving the 717...Nate- Pittsburgh, PA ;-)
Sorry for late reply as only recently subscribed (but loving these - so jealous) Highlights were free soda (hope Delta continue even if others aren't) and the tannoy announcement about how guests have never beaten the plane to the gate. Just what you need to hear :) Paul, you ever gonna do maybe a run-down of your top 10 and bottom 10 airports visited?
Awesome video as always, I think you should do a Norwegian 737 max trip report. I have not seen any trip reports on RUclips on the 737 max. Norwegian flys them from some places in England to the US and back for low cost. I think you should do a trip report on that
tachi 2.0 you can look up Norwegian 737 max and see the pictures of the plane, you can go to their website and see their fleet, you can look up Norwegian on Wikipedia and go to fleet, or just go on Flightradar24 pro and put on your 737 max filter and you will see them flying over the Atlantic
Nick Aviation oh yeah, they have, they just pick the first one.. I just see wikipedia.I though that Ryanair would be firs because they are the 737MAX 200 launcher..
Really enjoy your trip reports. Think you should do some trips on airlines like Monach, Thomas cook etc, with economy and premium economy as these are trips the majority are likely to take on holiday, and would be interesting to see how they compare. Also try some of the newer Scandinavian airlines such as Nextjet and nordica not seen any reviews on these. Anyway, keep the great videos coming
Easily one of the best short haul airplanes ever made. The 717 combines all the renowned ruggedness of the DC-9 with modern engines and avionics. With proper care and maintenance, this airframe could fly for another 30 years. Delta was smart to add these to their fleet. Hope they keep them for a while.
A great little aircraft is the Boeing 717. Flew on them many times in S E Asia in the early 2000's, between Bangkok and Singapore/Koh Samui. With the rear mounted engines, the cabin seemed quiet, and they would take off and gain altitude very quickly. I miss them, would prefer one to a A319 any time.
Nice video. The climb out over Manhattan beach, the costal fog and Santa Catalina in the distance were just nice to see. Was that a Lufthansa A320 NEO I saw on the rollout in Portland? I did not know that Mr. Trudeau was so popular south of the border.
Damn. When you landed, you saw 3 good aircraft. The Hawaiian 767 (I think it is a 767), that one Alaska Livery, and a c-130 part of the OREGON air National Guard
Hey Paul...I'm Matilda. I speak to you on Snapchat! I read the description and noticed that you asked for advice on more trip reports here are some of the best commercial airlines I've flown with: Monarch, Spirit, Virgin America, American airline ( they're amazing even though I know you've already flown with them), Qantas and Qatar. I hope you read and consider some of these. 👍🏼btw keep up the good work !
Beautiful capture. Last time I flew on this aircraft type was on AA from SFO to LAX. I love flying these older planes. There is a character to them that seems to be missing on today's newer models.
Great video as always, makes my monday morning much better! About the trip report.. How about a weekend trip to the Isle of Wight? It isn't that far away, but so great with the hovercraft und the old tube trains on the Island Line. Also you could maybe connect it with a flight from or to Southhampton! Greetings, Claudio (the one from Snapchat) :)
Hawaiian uses the 717 on their inter-island flights, so I've flown 717's a LOT. Other than that, I don't usually fly them in the mainland US, but coming back from SEA-SFO frequently, it's either Alaska's 737-800 or Delta's 717's.
Nice video. The plane was originally delivered to airTran when it was manufactured (hence the AT in the registration number). Too bad that Boeing discontinued this model after the merger with McDonnel-Douglas infavor of the 737. I always enjoyed flying in the DC-9 and its descendants...
Nice to see our Prime Minister popping up in your video, lol. Just booked some transcontinental flights yesterday for October: B777, A320 and B747 on KLM and Air France. Can't wait! Will also have some travelling coming up in September but haven't finalized the destinations nor aircraft at present.
I'm starting to watch your vids one by one! Do you use a mount or just have your phone/Go Pro in your pocket as some shots I notice you are hands free but still filming, for example when stirring coffee or getting on/off aircraft?
Great video Paul! This is my first time even seeing inside a 717 so I'm glad I got the opportunity to do so. Those F class seats look like the ones I flew a few weeks back so it looks like DL has been doing a good job retrofitting even their most ancient planes. But now have to ask. How do you have a SkyTeam elite status when you fly so much BA
WOW the departure time must have been a killer - I've never flown on a 717 so I was interested in discovering your experience. Did you get a status match for Skyteam? I used to fly a lot of them - I am now looking at Star Alliance as my second best to OneWorld
+Speedbird1 FLY I am going to ditch Oneworld altogether and fly Star. Skyteam is a status match yep, useless in the USA though as it won't get you into Delta lounges...
I was going to be flying a Boeing 717 and then Delta sent me an email saying that my flight was changed and I'm flying a CRJ-900 instead. Luckily the return flight will be a 717.
There's no aircraft I like better than the 717 (MD80). The power on takeoff and rate of climb make every flight exciting. It will be a big loss when they're no longer in service.
Let me correct the proper name for this bird: an MD95, the smallest of the "MadDog" (DC9, MD80/90/95) range and one of the last airplanes Mcdonnell Douglas ever designed before going into Boeing. This is one bird Paul sure would like a lot, since it got the "MadDog" DNA all over it.
Drinks are still complimentary on most, if not all of our carriers here in the US, with perhaps the exception of Allegiant and Spirit, etc. The legacy airlines still do complimentary drinks. Just thought I'd mention that. I don't that will be going away anytime soon.
The B717 started selling as the MD95, the smallest and last of the "MadDogs' and Boeing kept making it for a few years after they bought Mcdonnell Douglas. So McD designed both the MD90 and the B717. Most of the planes, most likely including this one, were at one time on AirTran's roster (they bought more than 50% of them as new). After Southwest bought AirTran they got rid of all of their B717's (wanting to keep only B737's for maintenance simplicity) dispersing into more airlines, like Hawaiian and Delta.
+Sukhi Singh Those wide angle shots are done on a mini GoPro. I have a clip which goes onto my small backpack, on the strap. This lets me film while walking about and also when using self service machines etc. I think it's a better use of a GoPro than sticking it to the window, which I used to do a lot.
Nice report, Paul. I have around 2000 hours flying the B717. The cockpit is identical to a MD-11(minus one engine), the engines are very powerful Rolls Royce turbofans, however the wing is very old DC-9 design. paceflight portland is the best to fly into because it’s the best airport in the near city with the best view of mt.hood.
Agreed. @@calebclark6696 PDX is also one of the best airports for planespotting. Park at the hotel parking lot and your right next to the runway.

Delta is taking all the 717 they can get their hands on. They’re cheap and easy, so for now they will be using all the 717s that other airlines are retiring.
wow! not sure I want to fly on an airline that is using some other airlines old planes, I will wait for the new CS 100 to arrive.
Why does Delta always get old planes?
@@astralartist4 Cheaper than buying new!
Loved this one a lot,I live in Portland and I'm retired from DL worked at PDX for many years, great video Thanks!
+Steve Hofmaster Thanks Steve!
Wonderful out of the window shots! Seemed a relatively painless and comfortable experience.
Another great video Paul - love the 'no passenger has ever beaten the aircraft to the gate' announcement after landing. Not heard that one before.
Great trip report Paul!!! Next time you fly to Portland fly on the Alaska e175, would love to see that flight, as I see it take off all the time.
I've flown the 717 on the LAX-PDX route in the past. Also on Hawaiian Airlines hopping around from island to island. It's a VERY nice smaller jet.
Great report as always Paul. Really enjoy your style of reporting and editing. Love the diversity of airlines and planes

another great trip paul! love the boeing 717 and its one of my favorite aircraft, I wish they were still in production. rob
Really enjoyed this one Paul. I have never flown a 717 so this was a very fun report for me to watch, thanks so much for making it.
+When I Travel The World Cheers, the 717 is a weird aircraft, not quite a regional jet but smaller than an Airbus.
Yeah its weird, not like a 727 and a relatively new aircraft, that they hardly made that many of.
This particular plane (B717 / MD95) is the kind Airbus wanted in the last few years, so they've decided to buy a mayor share in the Bombardier CS100 / 300 (now A220 / 230), which does the same function as the "smaller MadDog". Great video, as always! Do you have any recommendations for a *A mileage run from Europe to the West Coast?
+RonSmithize Thanks Ron. I fly for variety rather than miles so mileage runs aren't my thing. FlyerTalk is pretty definitive though.
Did you think about doing some more train trips? Now that you are in the US you could do some Amtrack trip reports.
+ivan gouba I was in the US in July; these videos are from then. There is a long Amtrak trip report coming, but it will take a long time to edit.

LAN 787 when I was at JFK airport for a tore I took a picture of me next to the plane I am a about a foot taller than the tire
Why does the b717 look like the md-90?
The B717 started selling as the MD95, the smallest and last of the "MadDogs' and Boeing kept making it for a few years after they bought Mcdonnell Douglas. So McD designed both the MD90 and the B717.
Most of the planes, most likely including this one, were at one time on AirTran's roster (they bought more than 50% of them as new). +Ricardo sam 5.
It looks as though your flying backwards during take off ,or is it me !
Kenneth Furley Na, the DC-9/MD-80/717 family has an interesting wing design
What’s the difference between this and the MD 80 they seem like siblings!
It started out as the MD-95, the final development of the MD-80, and was carried on by Boeing for a while after they took over McDonnell Douglas.
I believe that is a md80 the 717 is a bit more sticky at the nose and slightly bigger engines
How do you film bits when you are walking around? At 10.50, we see both your hands on your phone!

This lets me film while walking about and also when using self service machines etc. I think it's a better use of a GoPro than sticking it to the window, which I used to do a lot.
Ahh nice. Thanks very much for your response and as ever an enjoyable video! Look forward to next weeks!
A wing without a winglet looks so odd, im used to almost all planes flying commercially having them
Portland's a pretty nice airport - one of the better ones in the US.
