    I agree that cutting dovetails is a great way to learn so many essential skills. Personally, I don't like their look, but I wouldn't put a draw together without them. As you say, they are a signature of a craftsman. Having said that, most people make them too tight. So tight as to squeeze out the glue. This leaves a weaker joint. They should be soft to put together to take advantage of modern glues.

      You know I don't hear that a lot but I did read something similar not too long about being a little too tight. I try to make them so tight myself, mainly because where I'm at,the glue wants to set fairly quickly and if they are too tight,once I add the glue, it sometimes makes it difficult to tap together.
