Together had as one of the major stars John Burgess before he found fame in Brookie as David "Bing" Crosbie.

One thing that Together is never noted for is that it was the first soap to portray a gay couple living together, an accolade often given to Eastenders. And yet unlike Eastenders whose storyline attracted much press outrage at the time, the relationship in Together was barely commented on.

Yes,Together is an under rated very short lived soap (Only 52 Episodes in all)The storylines were good for the time(Early '80's)

Re the comments on acting it really was an incredible mix with those better known for their film work like Margaretta Scott, Victor Maddern and Kathleen Byron rubbing shoulders with those from TV such as Carol Hawkins, Delena Kidd and Stephen Churchett. It makes for an interesting programme despite the limited budget.

Thanks. Classy ending. I've never been able to see t his as I don't get Talking Pictures. I wonder if it would have continued if Southern hadn't lost their license.

I highly recommend the DVD release. It restores the dialogue removed from the recent repeats, and the quality was surprisingly good for a shot-on-video production from over 40 years ago!

I suspect they would have given they’d hired Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth to sing the new theme tune, something which wouldn’t have come cheap.
The final series went out in January/February 1981 leaving scope for another series by the years’ end but in the December beforehand Southern had found out they had lost their licence from January 1982 so they started doing what all ITV companies have done in that situation and cancel as much new programming as they can to in order to preserve cash for when they close.

Southern really ramped up their network efforts in 1980-81, producing ‘Together’ and also bagging a Saturday night slot for their comedies that brought such big names as John Inman, Julia McKenzie, Gareth Hunt and Rula Lenska down to Southampton. It clearly didn’t sway the IBA though

@@Redsleather it wasn’t the programming that was ever the issue. Although the IBA never gave a reason for Southern’s dismissal, they did allude to some issues which played upon their thinking but quality and range of programming was never one of them.
Firstly, the ownership of Southern rankled the IBA as it was owned by just three big corporate shareholders, one of them based over 600 miles away in Dundee. The IBA wanted greater local public ownership through share sales, something Southern’s owners would not countenance (Similar requests at Thames, Yorkshire and Central were accepted by their respective owners).
And secondly the IBA felt that the south and south-east area held great promise for the 1980s (which eventually came to fruition) and that Southern’s programme and business plans did not reflect those possibilities; in other words it was business as usual from Southern and whilst it worked for the 1970s the IBA just felt that in those circumstances TVS had more to offer going gorward.

This programme I'd hilarious. Pregnant women swigging brandy and having hangovers.
