    Brian I have to confess the majority of the UK population see the true or false element as not really of any great importance it is merely a vehicle for comedy and some very entertaining people to just talk shit and make us all laugh but it’s funny watching so many reactors Americans Australians etc getting very competitive and angry not quite getting it when Bob goes off on his named individuals tangent. It is usually a lie when the captains tell a story because it’s been season after season but it’s their delivery we watch for.

      I say something to this effect before every episode then I hear about Bob Mortimer cracking eggs into his bath at the request of Chris Rea or Kevin Bridges buying a Bulgarian horse and returning it after 50 minutes (with a 5 minute break) and suddenly getting to the truth is the only important thing in my life

    There actually WAS an American version of this show on the CW.
    You'll be absolutely SHOCKED to learn (from Wikipedia) that with Americans in charge, it lasted ALL THE WAY from "April 9 to July 9, 2022".
    Proving yet once again that there are some things Americans really ought not to touch. 🤨

    I fail to understand why US tv stations don’t simply buy the rights to show existing English speaking successful comedy shows and try them out rather than risk failure on buying the rights to make a US version and getting it wrong the perfect example is the inbetweeners, if you have seen the abysmal US version you would see why.

      If they they ever take me to Guantanamo, they should play that to me. I'd tell them everything.

    • @BenLaws-m9j
      @BenLaws-m9j 9 месяцев назад

      It’s not as simple as the cost of buying the rights. The thing is, whilst many Americans do get our humour, many more don’t, so things have to be changed, they also have different sensibilities around language and dark humour. And yep, many American versions of British shows don’t work, but they’re all hoping for theirs to become “The Office” which worked spectacularly and was a lot more popular in America than our version.

      Because america as a whole just doesn't understand foreign comedy and do not accept anything that is "not their own".

    Whenever it's Lee, it's nearly always a lie - not always, but nearly. They basically give him a card with an outrageous lie on it that will take a lot of clever invention to expand it into something plausible and then let him do it.

    • @SketchyMagpie
      @SketchyMagpie 9 месяцев назад +3

      This is more to do with the show being on for so long than anything, there are only so many true stories to tell! It’s like why Lee and David are never the ones that the person in “this is my…” know, now, except for the very rare occasion.

    • @brendanm6921
      @brendanm6921 9 месяцев назад

      @@SketchyMagpienah, right from the beginning Lee was always given lies. Because as the other person said, he's just so witty that he can run with pretty much anything.

    With regards to the use of 'peanut oil'... 'REFINED peanut oil' has been processed in a way that REMOVES the peanut 'proteins' from the oil. It is the 'proteins' that cause allergic reactions. Studies have shown that refined peanut oil will not cause allergic reactions for most people who are allergic to peanuts. If you do have a reaction, it’s likely to be very mild.

    Funnily enough, a lot of the Chinese people living in the UK adopt a traditional English name. My wife is Chinese and she has an English alternative name, as do many of her family. I don't think there's any Steves though, but there's an Alfie, William, Katherine amongst them.

    As someone else has already mentioned, whether it's true or not isn't really the point. The point is how quickly the contestant can make up stuff and how much it makes us laugh, rather than guess whether true or false correctly. For us it's the journey that matters, not the end result. That's why this show wouldn't work in America because Americans would be all about guessing lie or truth.

    WILTY is one of those UK penal shows that even though there is ostensibly a scoring system, the score does not matter a lick. QI is another example of it. Getting the answers correctly does not matter. Getting some banging storytelling and aome good laughs out of it is the point.

    You should really watch the one where Lee says he was invited to the Royal Wedding but David and Rob weren't. It's absolutely brilliant watching their reaction

  • @SketchyMagpie
    @SketchyMagpie 9 месяцев назад +5

    For context, David and Lee usually get one “truth or lie” per episode that is obviously a lie from the outset (like this) and the entertainment comes from them then trying to make it believable.

    Of course it's a lie . The last round is usually Lee and David and they've been doing the show for so long it's ( almost ) always an entertaining lie . In the case of WILTY. they did try a US. version , watched a bit on u tube , it was ok , but I think our shows work because everyone on British tv knows - or at least knows of - everyone else . The US. is so big and you don't have that .

    You know when you’re getting old when you have to bend down to your knees to put your bra on! When you put on a lifejacket and you have to scoop your stray watermelons back underneath the jacket for bouyancy, it’s called old age and it’s time to watch your younger relatives for schemes to cash in your life insurance!😃✌️❤️🇬🇧 this would make an interesting triangular warning road sign in Florida!😀
