Jaws the Revenge Clips - DVD vs BBC cut

- Found an old, poorly recorded VHS of the (mildly) infamous BBC showing of JTR back in the late 90s / early 00s so have put the best bits side by side with the DVD. The 4:3 screening removed the widescreen matte bars so you could see large parts of the shark's machinery. Made an already enjoyably awful film, even more enjoyable.

The boat piercing the shark makes more sense than it blowing up. Never seen that end before. Thanks.
HOLY CRAP. I had read about the giant square in the bottom, had no idea how BAD it was..... you see it like 3 times
Don't know why but I have an inexplicable affection for this movie. It's great to see the shark platforms as well. Looked for them in the original Jaws but couldn't see anything, they did a fantastic job with that.
seeing all the machinery of the shark in this comparison video has definitely made my day lol
0:45 I see why the Shark was so hungry! A good 'lot of him was missing!
It makes sense now! He has a bottomless stomach!
Never saw that into the theater.
The BBC ending is actually the original theatrical release ending.
BBC ending was better.
Way more realistic even though the shark looked fake but hey, it’s WAY more better than the shark exploding while getting impaled.
The shark exploding was s**t. The other is better. They should’ve done that one instead of the exploding one.
Why heeeel nooooo I like more the BBC ending
Well in US theaters when it came out Jake died and the shark was stabbed and bled out not explode. Wish it wasn't released with the exploding ever. I desperately want the stab and bleeding edition.
The fricking Movie one is trash, THE EXPLOSION FOR THE SHARK IS JUST A STUPID TOY! BBC is better.
Attack of the Crane Monster
I still laugh at the girl at 4:11 each time I watch this film: "Ah, I forgot my line!"
Is that what she really said?If that's what she said that's actually funny
Joey Taylor she definitely said "oh my god".
HDGoofnut What More did you expect her to say, except « Ahhhhhh! »? It’s not like she was supposed to give a whole monologue, lol. You’re kind of a moron.
HDGoofnut it sounds like IIIIIIIII FORGOTMYLINE!!! But yeah she probably said AAAAH OHMYGAAAAD
🤣 that’s brilliant and just adds the stupidness of this movie
Why do I get the impression that the only person who gave a rap in making this movie was Michael Small, the guy who did the music for this one? Because that, and Michael Caine's 'Oh Shit!' are the only two good things in it!!
But what about Judith Barsi? As Thea, she gave a better performance than anybody else in the movie.
Thanks for posting this. I spent ages trying to tell my friend about seeing Jaws the Revenge and seeing all the machinery underneath the shark in various shots but when I went to show them the dvd it was cropped out.
Now I can show them this and what I meant!
Ana Lytical you saw it in theaters and it was like this?
The DVD is the theatrical version. You’d never see the tracks or mechanics on the big screen because of the black bars on the top and bottom. The TV versions remove the bars and crops the frame to fill the screen, thus you’re able to see the tracks and things making the shark move.
nope you never saw it in cinema like that only on the BBC
I like that Jaws 4 payed homage to the first Jaws film too. I know they say this film is the worst out of all the films, but it isn’t THAT bad. All I’m saying is that it could’ve been better.
I don't think jaws the revenge is nearly as bad as people tend to let on. At the very least it's pretty entertaining, definitely not high art, but always a fun watch
0:46 open matte was hilarious
It's English.
p.s. - Fuck you.
Cryptid Films English. Fuck you.
Cryptid Films I love your films. You're so talented!
+Frank Stein there's no country called English it's a language u fucker
that's not nice
I cannot believe this scared me when I was little. My dad was always into with watching the first one with me...but this, never. I get it now for sure lol
oh wow! i've only seen the BBC edit once before and it was on a fan site that shut down; I have really been hoping to catch this again. Thanksomuch for posting, it is downright jawdropping the lack of f***s given during the making of this movie.!
I remember seeing that cut on TV in the mid 90's and it spun me out how different it was.
Many thanks for posting this video, lebombe. It was interesting seeing the shark rig in action after only seeing the one for the original movie in photos. It made me think of the visible sled in White Buffalo.
Ha ha, Ellen's flashback in the BBC has an added aspect ratio difference. Guess, she has Premiere Pro for memory correction.
HHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAH your comment killed me
Joey Taylor YES YOU
Joey Taylor fuck off
Cryptid Films you must hate this Joey Taylor for what? What did he do?
Sorry Joey Taylor but I'm working on it
gutz1981 p
0:47 Welp, BBC gaves that suspense away...
And on 5:38 on the BBC version, I like that shark's death better cuz' it's less stupid and dumb than the other on DVD...
The original theatrical release in the US was the stabbing and sinking, not the explosion. I know this because I was a stupid teen who was infatuated with JAWS movies, so I was there on the first weekend.
No I was at theater too opening weekend...the DVD shown in this comparison video is NOT the US theatrical version at all. In US theaters we got the BBC version with Jake dying, the shark getting stabbed and bleeding out instead of exploding. I desperately want to own the version on the right like it was in U.S. Theaters. With Jake dying and shark bleeding out. Can't find a copy region free anywhere.
@@chadmiller4601 as i know Netfilx using Stabbing Ending
This is more common than you think! A lot of films made around the 1980s and 1990s are released under so-called widescreen format....which means they actually crop off the top and bottom of the frame.
Filming in Super 35 made it easier in the days of VHS to convert the film into full screen without losing vital info on the sides, as filmmakers got tired of seeing their scope widescreen films getting hacked into full screen for TV with the sides lopped off. What was shown on the top and bottom was often dead space and was never intended to be seen in theaters. Widescreen doesn't automatically mean getting the most picture information, but it is what you are intended to see. The video clearly demonstrates that more picture isn't always better.
This movie need a remake
TheCleo Gamer Probably not
The goofiness just needs to be ramped up for it to be remade. Instead of Ellen being able to sense the shark, she should be able to talk to it as it discovers its fins can be used for flight and for dialing the phone to make threatening calls to the Brodys. The shark also needs to be slower and wobble more in the water. Then Michael Cain's Hogie can discover his inability to get wet after swimming allows him to electrify the water with his cavalier attitude. Then bring back the ghosts of the first three Great Whites by the Force so they can annoy Ellen by swimming in front of her face in the air while she tries to steer the boat. Seriously, this remake writes itself.
Probably
I remember seeing a cut of JTR on BBC One on a Saturday night in the summer of 1995. It was on at around 6.30pm and was cut to hell. Practically all of the banana boat attack was excised (no shots of the woman in the shark's mouth at all) and most blood and "scary bits" trimmed down to almost nothing. The film ended up being, no joke, about 1 hour 15 mins long.
I knew I remembered it well! It was August - check it out genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/bbcone/london/1995-08-05 starts 6pm and the next show is on at 7.20
pretty sure they used the bbfc VHS cut for broadcast
The VHS in the U.K. was never cut, the PG cinema version was.
Just before I saw your message, I thought exactly the same thing 👍🏽😂
It's open matte on the BBC version since the film was shot in Super 35.
"You were only supposed to blow the bloody shark up!"
The same could probably apply to all the 'Jaws' movies. When lacking the correct aspect ratio, there's typically all manner of unintended things that can be seen by the viewer in the frame. Typically, correct ratio will eliminate boom microphones, etc. that are often captured in the image overall during shooting (with the assumption that they will be 'cropped' out later), but here it's Bruce's mechanics.
Indeed, the formerly oddball compositional choices of some of the shark shots (i.e. 0:59 and 1:03) are now easy to understand!
Problem is though, they showed all this shit on television as a normal film. That's what makes it so unforgivable.
Bubblez Beano in Jaws 1 The shark cables r perfect hidde
The thing is Jaws had a lower budget so they had to work with less. They used cables and lines that they hid in the water or had divers to control the shark with above water shots. It was all in framing and shot composition, not editing or the aspect ratio because even the original BBC 4:3 aspect ratio of Jaws didn’t have any of this. Let alone Jaws the revenge having all of these issues with awful cinematography showing the parts of the Animatronic, awful editing and overall piss poor effort, the script and story is absurd and offensive to the once proud franchise
I just love how those people are running away as if the sharks gonna grow legs and chase them down to eat them😅😂
OMG! You can definitely see the platform. Wth!
Ok I thought I was seeing things. It's like... they didn't even try to hide it!
It was fascinating to actually see the platform at work.
@@lorenvburrell yeah they didn't try to hide it. Now this worst Jaws sequel is much much worst Jaws sequel ever.
@@kevindavis296 they tried, basically DVD aspect ratio IS the aspect ratio that planned to be released on Theaters
Thanks, I thought I had erased all trace of this from my memory once. Now I have it in there again.
The first BBC clip was terrible because of the shark's mechanisms but the final clip (where he is impaled) was great
I wish they would've kept that ending with the impalement; multiple angles of the shark mysteriously exploding followed by a clip of footage from the end of the first film just looks sooooo lazy and this movie didn't need anymore laziness
misscr33p3rs It's true. In fact, I heard in a review that this movie was completed in 9 months which is EXTREMELY short time
The BBC version just shows you how to shark is moved. At 1:54 you can definitely see a rig of some sort under the shark moving it forward. At 0:43 and 1:13 you see something under the shark that moves it forward. And at 2:55, what does the shark has in it's mouth? It looks like balloons, but are only seen for a split second.
Snowwie88 They’re airbags that inflated to open the sharks mouth, and then immediately deflated to close it
BIOHAZARD - R - US the airbags are to help it float so it’s not so heavy on the tracks.
anybody here Michael caine say: I'm over here after ellen said Michael 6:04 FAIL
yeah lol
Then maybe you should pay more attention because he actually says "come over here" while signalling with his head movement directing her to the piece of floating boat wreckage.
Love the Part in Jaws. When Brody says Smile you Son of a Bitch
Whoever edited the BBC TV version deserves a medal for the worst editing ever. After seeing that, I now love the cliff in Jurassic Park
+Peter Schofield probably. And they might have to cut it a certain way to fit the TV's properly
+Peter Schofield yeah, and they're still formatted full screen. I was watching Jaws last summer, and it looked funny, and I realized it wasn't widescreen, which somewhat bothered me
Just FWIW, this was shown by the BBC on the following dates:
30.11.91
4.9.93
5.8.95
17.3.97
30.9.98
28.3.01
17.12.03
No idea if they were all shown open-matte. I suspect not.
dunebasher1971 if you'd like, I just uploaded the AMC cut of Jaws the Revenge a few minutes ago
30th Nov 1991 would have been the time when I recorded it off TV, and it was edited/butchered as it wasn't on particularly late at night. It was also the Jake dies version, which confused the hell out of me, as a 8 year old I could have sworn when I saw it on rental in 1989 that Jake lived (but I put that down to bad kid memory). The shots of the shark sinking into the deep with the girl were removed, and I didn't see those until I bought the 25th anniv VHS (which would have been 2000), which also handily proved my memory hadn't been playing tricks after all.
I'm still convinced there was extra scenes/shots in the JAWS 3 I saw on TV in roughly 1991 than there is on the DVDs.
The director just didn't care that the shark's rig was showing. Absolutely sloppy.
All of that stuff was meant to be cropped for theaters, as is seen in the DVD. The BBC broadcast is the entire open matte frame which you were never meant to see.
I can’t believe they used the crappy ending on the DVD
I know I have this on VHS somewhere, recorded off the BBC back in the day. Just need to find it.
Also check out BBC's airing off Arachnophobia too. Same issue, unmatted and in some shots you could see the animatronic rod sticking up the large spider's ass! XD
It's like BBC knew that no amount of cropping could ever improve this dumpster fire of a movie, so they just didn't bother.
SMILE YOU SON OF A BIT!
I had this exact version recorded on VHS from BBC TV. At the time I was studying A Level Film Studies and Media at College so I took it in and showed it during a lesson as an example of screen width and presentation.
We’re they trying to teach you how not to make a movie or something???
They didn’t need to, Jaws the Revenge itself is a whole lesson on how not to make a movie.
@@spandexraygun5325 true, true
I remember watching this on tv and you can still see all the wires and animatronic parts it was silly and dumb but the ending was better than the explosion
The Energizer Shark...it's keeps going...
Another wonderful movie to the JAWS family.
I like that it payed homage to the first Jaws film too. I know they say this film is the worst out of all the films, but it isn’t THAT bad. All I’m saying is that it could’ve been better.
Still prefer the original shark death. Oh well, at least in the re-edit Mario survives.

It goes to show poor filing capabilities. There are better ways to set up a shot. I always hated the shark at the bottom of the frame...even though I knew why. However, I love seeing the mechanics for behind the scenes stuff. Great video and comparison. USA TV did not have the open matte for 4:3. Cool stuff.
Amazed this director and his editor got away with this but then again Spielberg and szwarc were slick filming jaws 1 and 2 in murkier water.
None of the stuff shown on the right was ever intended to be seen, and was not shown in theaters. The widescreen version on the left is how the film was intended to be seen. Widescreen doesn't always mean getting the most possible picture, but it does mean you are seeing what the director intended for you to see, as the video on the right clearly demonstrates by having the mattes removed, revealing the mechanical workings of the shark.
The BBC ending made more sense
micheal sounded like jon tron when he said "jesus christ"
4:32 - damn the BBC version REALLY has the already ridiculous shark coming FAR out of the water. hahaha. come on, guys. the first movie wasn't like this. you really expect us to think that a shark can stand on hind legs and bend at the waist to eat Jake?
How about this video of actual great whites flying all the way out of the water??? ruclips.net/video/BLfKAQ0CM5s/видео.html
How about this video of actual great whites flying all the way out of the water??? ruclips.net/video/BLfKAQ0CM5s/видео.html
The shark roars like King Kong.
I would’ve still shit my pants, crane or not. Especially if I were on the banana boat scene. Can you imagine not screaming your lungs out with that thing jumping out of the water? Lol. Machinery sounds or not, it might have been pretty frightening. I still hate what they did with this movie, but what can you do. Studios and their dumbass schedules.
This is the way it was meant to be seen!
I can't believe the people responsible didn't notice or care how the open matte revealed all the shark's mechanisms. No one seemed to give a fuck. Compare this with Spielberg and Joe Alves shooting insert shots on their own time and dollar just to make _Jaws_ a better movie. They lavished all their time and energy on it, even the small details.
the version that was on netflix is the bbc one, you can tell by the "stab & jake dead" ending
I want the jake dying and shark bleeding out version on DVD but cannot find it. It's always the exploding ending and that is not how it was in U.S. Movie theaters. In theaters it was bleeding shark ending and Jake died.
@@chadmiller4601 VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray always has Jake Alive ending
Can someone explain to me why the DVD version has the shark blow up at the end?
TheBestComicKing no one knows the answer to that
Aaaah... good old VHS
3:44,3:47,3:49,3:46,3:39
5:03 At least they both have my favorite part!!! :D
Of course
Right there along with Shinji Ikari and Armin Alert
The fact that the uncropped version aired on tv is just so bizarre lol. I imagine a good chunk of movies would have visible mics, crew members, wires, etc if they were shown in their improperly cropped state. Again, i can't wrap my head around why someone who make the decision to show a version of the film that is essentially not edited completely
And Action Crane ! The Shark is NOT Working !! it looks high and stoned ! and thentries to eat the boat with too much hot sauce , had a heart attack and died ! but its a better ending than the- "Cut n paste " job from The 1st one ! not the mention the Ridicous plot line ! Which was as bad as the camera work showing the CRANE ! ABOUT 3TIMES ! no wonder that director never worked again ! Michael Small did a great job to embelish the John Williams Theme . Made it even more scary i thought. One thing i never understood about this movie . Apparntly, they Found the Original Diagrams from the 1st movie on how to build the Shark , so how come the 1st one looked real and this one looked like a mechanailly led plastic maiko with, quite an obvious Crane keel ! ??
How Can This Film Would Be Awful, It was A Good Cinematography.
Look carefully during the sunken boat chase and you'll spot a random 'flash frame' too ala The Exocist.
Clearly no one checked the edit before showing it. That first shot of the hollow inside is bad enough!
Isn't there another version where Jake survives the attack at the end as well? I'm sure i didnt dream this.
JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!
Damn we need a bbc version on dvd
Who I saw Jaws 3D I thought it would be impossible to make a worse Jaws movie. Then Jaws 4 came out... Nuff said...
Donald Mousseau If you preferred Jaws 3D shark over this one, you should not be bragging about it. Loved the scene when the cartoon shark hits the glass wall and it’s miniature clay version is trying to enter the control room. Very suspenseful.
Watching Jaws 3 in 3D does make the movie a bit better. Not by much, but viewing the movie the way it was originally made, with better quality now on the blu ray, it is a tiny bit better. What’s funny about how bad Jaws The Revenge is, is that JTR scraps everything from Jaws 3 as if it never happened. That’s why Universal renamed this one to Jaws The Revenge, so people wouldn’t see it as Jaws 4. Universal calls this the definitive third entry in the Jaws trilogy.
I personally find that Jaws, Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge have at least some connection to each other, because of returning original cast members and the fact that Amity Island features in all three of them. Jaws 3D is the that makes no sense to me, because of that lack of connection.
@@alasdairgardiner2313 The point is connected or not, Jaws 4 was the worst of the bunch...And considering how bad J3 was that's saying something...
Well at least the DVD version actually tried hiding all the wires from the shark in the scene where Michael was getting chased by it.
where can see alternate cut actually? in prime video is this or bluray version
Jaws The Revenge is came out July 17th,1987
I only like DVD on Widescreen.
in the BBC version of the shark... YOU CAN ALL WAYS SEE THE ROBOTIC ARM!
Hello, I want to buy that BBC recording. I looked for it many years ago and I have a project that I want to do with it.
4:31 L0L How does that posible!?
:))) Some kind of a dick sharky. Roaring balloon shark. :))
So, forgive me for asking if it’s already been answered - so was Jaws The Revenge originally filmed in 4:3? And the final release is actually cropped?
From what I understand, the original intended widescreen frame is captured on a piece of 35mm film which is more square in shape - they mask the parts above and below the widescreen image. But they only ever intended the widescreen parts to be seen. When it came to converting for 4:3 Television use, instead of doing traditional pan-and-scanning across the widescreen image, occasionally, and stupidly, they sometimes instead chose to unmask the parts above and below that were never intended to be seen. Used to happen quite a lot so TV versions would often feature boom mics / camera tracks... mechanical shark innards, which were never originally intended to be seen.
Since time immemorial, events have taken place with no evident reason for their happening. Such phenomenon has been mans dilemma and the subject of constant philosophical discussions. When there is no factor motivating an event, no case of cause creating effect, what triggered the action? Fate... or circumstances? What you are about to see concerns such an event. Maybe you can determine whether we are dealing here with circumstances... or fate.
Lol that horrible monologue 😂
That was their way of trying to make excuses for the stupidity of the premise.
i like the UK DVD
The BBC Version Was Awsome but We Can see Shark Machinery Its Like A Laserdisc But Isnt That Broadcasted In 1990s?
Hey the BBC thing does it show all that stuff on the AMC channel when it plays this?
why did the shark follow him? And can one outswim a shark?
to be fair the bbc version has the better ending
It's the fact they didn't even try and cover up the animatronics like really? Just put like a filter or cover it idk. In the BBC one
Is there someone who knows where can I download the full BBC cut?
the bbc version is waaaaaay better than the dvd version. who agrees?
I DO :D
+Cryptid Films the pictures more clearer. And the banana boat scene is more better
+Cryptid Films Yeah. its amazing
I never understood why the shark exploded on the UK DVD version.
The VHS death of the shark was cooler
On the BBC version I can always see the thing that's holding the shark
Never ride a banana boat after this scene. Or before. And I gave up bananas.
4:38, he literally turns round and sits in the sharks mouth
I love the bbc enden because it shows a mini shark stabbed on the sinking bow
omg 1987
I don't know for some reason you can see more of the screen in the BBC version
In the BBC version there is lots of mistakes
Is this full version BBC cut of this movie available in anywhere?
Wow, arent widescreen versions supposed to show more picture on the sides rather than cutting it off of top and bottom?? This is a ripoff!
hello, would you share this recording with me?, or how much would you sell it to me?
The TV A.K.A BBC And AMC Ver Of Jaws 4 5:38
Apex Predator
The uk dvd version is better because they literally just show you all the mistakes in the bbc version
Sorry, but 4:3 version is the better by default. No matter are seen the boom mic or not. Tilt & scan is as unacceptable as pan & scan.
I'm still not getting in the bathtub with that thing regardless if it's made out of rubber or not👍
