I collect vintage US made Levi's and have been wearing them since the late 1960s. Everyone including myself was wearing 646 bell bottoms at that time. My mother told me to buy a pair of 501s and they fit me so much better I changed over and have been wearing them since. Mr. Clark would be shocked by my collection. He is correct that orange tabs used to be the lower end Levis. The 646 bell bottoms were orange tab, probably because they don't use rivets and red tabs have to have rivets. Orange tab jeans still used high quality cotton unlike today's paper thin rough cotton Levi's. White tabs were used on thin ribbed corduroy pants which used to be an alternative to jeans. Silver tabs are a special case, they were made in the 1990s and are the best Levi's ever made. They used the heaviest highest quality cotton, ooze quality, and are are too warm for Summer use. The silver tabs were dressier and the black ones are super nice (they came in relaxed, boot cut, loose, and baggy). But when it comes to jeans, vintage 501s are perfect and better than silver tab blue jeans. Over time Levis has changed the 501s a lot, including the fit, the material, and details like redlines. I consider the 501 shrink-to-fit jeans made between 1994-1999 to be the golden era of 501s. They have the best fit, a lower waist, and use the optimal weight soft cotton fabric that fades great. The 517 jeans are really yesterday's 646 bell bottoms with rivets. They continue on because they are popular with truckers. The bell bottoms on 684 jeans are too big and flap around making them unpractical, while the 646s still look good if not too short. I have redline 501s but I never wear them because of their value and the 501s from the 1990s are better for wearing. I won't own a pair of Levis that doesn't have the original hem.
Yeah both these fits he mentioned aren’t technically bootcut but do fit over boots. 517 has a 16.5 leg opening and goes up to 19 as sized up, unlike the wranglers

1966 model 501 is the best Jean ever made for me slimmer than 1947 model and I got my favorite pair for $2 lol
