The giant red flag for me was them saying how their channel was on the brink of financial collapse but also already planned trips to Europe to film content. Like. What???
Yeah if they are on the brink of collapse they need to reel in costs, which unfortunately may mean letting some staff go. As much as it sucks, that is the first thing that should be looked at, as payroll is one of the major expenses when running a business.
@@csailer2353 They probably didn't need to let anyone go if they weren't paying for flights, equipment, travel, lodging, food, location fees and (likely) local guides to travel to a different continent. The "need" for money was purely for selfish, creative fulfillment.
@@csailer2353 Their initial mistake was hiring a bunch of friends and family that would be harder to fire if hiring 25 people for one channel turned out to be a tad too ambitious... I'm just flabbergasted at the decision making.
12,000 member is so much! Screen shows almost 14,000 then in almost the next breath I’ve never been good at math! Omg I so relate! I think Watcher will bounce back but it’ll take a very, very long time. And they won’t be as large as they could have been. They’ve got a very close fan base who really related and loved them and it hurt them very deeply with this shock that made no sense. There’d be people introducing their kids to the channel, and that’s unfortunate for them those people won’t anymore. They’re comment sections talked about Shane and Ryan totally about stuff off topic of the show. They just loved them and it was very easy to see.
It’s their food content. It’s extremely expensive and it’s unpopular. Apparently they make $60,000 per month on Patreon and it’s still not enough to cover their content and pay their 25 employees. I’ve been watching Ryan and Shane for 8 years, so this decision made me extremely angry
They could have saved themselves all of this embarrassment and done a youtube poll to guage interest in a new streaming service
This is exactly what I was thinking lmao, they could've easily asked their fans if this was something they were even remotely interested in
They polled Reddit. 30% said they'd pay. (According to not fact checked comments)
@@pinkbunny6218I bet those 30% or in the top tier patreon already paying 😂😂
@@pinkbunny6218if that’s true that’s insane. I didn’t even know they had a Reddit! Why wouldn’t they pole where all their viewers would see it? 🤦🏽♀️ major goof on their part
This is mean but they look a hot mess and I don’t want to look at them anymore.
The idea that a video that didn’t perform well for free would perform better behind a pay wall is wild
The word you are looking for is CRAZY.
I think the logic is that it doesn't matter if a video doesn't do well, there'll be getting your $6 a month either way
To answer questions:
They have 25 employees (mostly friends and family) in a spacious downtown LA office. For a RUclips channel that inconsistently uploads.
Shane just had a $55k wedding.
EDIT: Apparently $55k was just the cost of the VENUE. I hate it here.
Steven is renovating his Hollywood condo, brags about driving a Tesla and his $300 matcha machine, and all of HIS shows on the channel involve traveling to expensive places and eating good topped expensive foods. In fact, in the same video they announced everything is going behind a paywall, they also excitedly announced that they had hired TWO MORE PEOPLE to revive Steven’s old “worth it” show from Buzzfeed.
Ryan is the driving force behind better production value for already overproduced content.
They mismanaged money and have expensive tastes and wanted the viewers to foot the cost of the bill entirely instead of billion dollar corporations who have the money and are practically throwing it at them. They didn’t lean into their Patreon because they have to pay Patreon a portion of the subscriptions.
This is greed and business mismanagement plain and simple. I’m not at all impressed with an apology and backtrack that probably would not have happened if they hadn’t lost 100k+ subscribers and almost half of their patrons in 3 days. “We’re sorry we called you poor and almost made ourselves poor. Here’s the crumbs a month later, plebs.”
Apparently it was $55k just on the venue alone🙃
There was sometime during the pandemic I realized they weren’t at a office/studio filming but were in Steven’s really luxury looking home and that’s when I realized, oh they’re Rich Rich.
Just to add to your observations/facts, I totally agree it’s business mismanagement and that the follow up video was basically the minimum necessary to save a ship they sunk themselves.
@@lisahoshowsky4251I was just going to update my comment with that info! $50k for just the VENUE? I saw other comments that she had THREE wedding dresses???
Yeah, that’s totally a living on a “fair wage”. 🙄
Charlie (Penguinz0) has similar sub/view counts, owns other businesses and has similar employee numbers as his businesses don't relate to his YT work (but reckons they don't need so many for that). He says even after all his outgoings including one of his esport team members earning 10 grand month, he's still comfortably off so reckons it's greed or mismanagement.
@@covidfeverdream multiple wedding dresses at one wedding is obnoxious.
Don’t forget about the money they make going on tours!!!
It’s insane the amount of SUCCESSFUL revenue streams they have. The mismanagement is appalling.
As a creator I just can't imagine having almost 3 million subs and being like "this isn't good enough"
same 🤣
I am still mind boggled SSSniperwolf bungled her 30 million subscriber bag, while a couple of hotshots think their 3 million sub fame is enough to give everyone the middle finger.
I don't understand not wanting to fire a few people but being OK with firing most if their fans
@Dimsrose that's because they made the mistake of hiring friends and family. They need to reduce staff, but they don't want to fire their friends. They also need to move the office. Apparently they rent a good sized space in Hollywood. I've seen people say moving to Burbank could cut their rent in half.
@@torijones5194 It would.
I live in California (Silicon Valley) and yes, stuff is super expensive here, but all places are NOT equal in cost.
Burbank is not as expensive and they are SWIMMING in space from what you can see in the videos, yet they are paying extra for freelance crew and studio time? How about build a studio in their huge office? WTH?
There’s just something about reading your apology off a teleprompter that really screams
⭐️⚡️genuine⚡️⭐️
I actually don't think reading off a teleprompter is bad at all. It ensures they are saying everything they need to and saying it right especially as I'm sure they were all stressed out ASF all weekend. You dont want to word something badly just because you're too emotional.
RUclipsrs never paulergize
now you're just looking for stuff to whine about lol
Random comment here: I love that you put timers on your ads. Non-aggressive, very calm timers that just count down to your content... I know it's not revolutionary, but I appreciate it.😊
Omg same it's the first time I seen someone do it in case I want to skip or I wanna know when the normal content is gonna start again.
Yes I agree 🙌🏻
I thought the exact same thing when it came up.. usually I start skipping, but with the counter, I usually just let it play cause I’m thinking “120 seconds isn’t too bad”… anyone else’s 2 minute ads? SKIP 🤣
Yeah it is a really nice touch. However, Jamie's ads are often content of their own with funny skits. I never mind watching her sponsors lol
Yes! One of the first things I noticed watching her vids and I was so glad she did that!
“At least they apologized with words and not a ukulele song” 😂😂😂👏👏👏
That made me laugh on its own, but I'm dying to know is that a reference to something?
@@suzybearheart530 it's reference to Collen Ballinger's apology video, which wctually was not an apology but a "fuck you" song to the haters. The controversy she was into is that she was accused of grooming minors
@suzybearheart530 you need to watch Swoop's coverage of that whole thing.
Yeah, that was so funny. 😂😂😂
What’s interesting is they also didn’t consider that some people (fools like me) already pay for RUclips, so I already consider it a part of my “streaming service budget”😅
Such a good point. I have been considering paying for youtube but ive made it this far lol

I think people are so tired of subscription fees. Streaming was supposed to be the answer to the high cost of cable and satellite, but sub streaming has become just as expensive if not more expensive.
I was so happy when HBO turned into Max and started adding other apps like discovery, etc. and it’s only 1599 with no commercials! That’s a lot of great curb your enthusiasm. A lot of great TLC 90 days. 😅😂. Between Max and RUclips that’s pretty much all I watch I gave up everything else when I cut the cable. (2015) Bye-bye housewives you guys are too boring and political for me.😮
Btw my 48” TV was not a smart TV so I bought an apple box with the remote and it was the best thing I ever did!!!
I’ll have to look into that, thanks.
$100K is like 7-8 years wages for me and they earn it a month and have the nerve to act like they're underpaid
Well to be fair there are staff and stuff to pay for. They probably could have saved here and there but that's just me.
Business and salary are not comparable in any way. I turned over 100k last year and my take home profit to pay myself was 15k. So I was living on 15k (AUD)
Jamie, you are adorable!!
$100k gross is not that much anymore. First of all, a good chunk of that is automatically gone to taxes, then their staff, equipment, etc. all the business expenses, and then the profit is split between 3 grown men who probably have kids and families. And they are in LA which is very expensive
Unfortunately according to economic reports coming out recently technically to even be considered middle class you have to make a yearly income of about $1mil(in America) with the new poverty line(meaning if you don't make this much you can't live by yourself and afford the basic living requirements) being $45k a year. It does fluctuate based off location but those are based off national averages. The economy is poop and obviously most are in poverty class or lower class. With nearly no middle class and just some upper class
I honestly preferred it when they had cheap production. Like season 1 puppet history is my favorite bc it was just some cutouts on a stick. It felt more intimate-like I was actually a friend watching instead of a consumer.
right like for youtube, there comes a point where too much production is a bad thing. like ppl were not watching for the content, they were there for the people making it.
They have 13,727 Patreon members and if EVERYONE was paying the lowest tier it would be $68,605 per month MINIMUM.
But according to Steven they need morrrrrre!!
Yeah I would need a breakdown of their patreon plus RUclips plus advertising plus merch and how much they are accruing totally to know if this is just a money grab.
I mean take that and divide it by 20-25 and it will account for all of their staff and themselves. And of course that still wouldn’t account for production costs and other business expenses.
So does $68k a month actually cover staffing? A quick Google tells me a living wage in LA is at least $96.5k annual salary, and if we assume that all staff gets health & retirement benefits then you need to add roughly 30% to that number to get the cost per hire, so that's $125.5k times 25 full time people is $3,137,500 per year. So if all 25 people make a base "living wage" salary to be comfortable in California, they need at least $261,450 per month to cover labor costs, plus whatever they need for supplies, spaces, website maintenance, production, equipment, etc. I don’t have a good idea of what those production costs look like monthly but I can't imagine it's minimal!
Ok but that’s actually nothing for a company so not valid
Dudes are greedy little baztards
Buzzfeed Unsolved was probably the best thing that ever came out of Buzzfeed😭

This really breaks my heart. Shane and Ryan were my FAVORITE RUclipsrs in their BuzzFeed Unsolved days. It was the only BuzzFeed show I watched or respected and it was all because of them. I don't see how this will ever work because people get on RUclips and spontaneously click on whatever video grabs their attention at that second.
Dual models have been the most successful for creators. Free content on YT with paywalled content on Patreon or an independent website.

Double edit: Or a membership program using YT’s offerings for creators. Member-only videos, y’know?
That's exactly how I found Watcher (and this channel).

If anything, it seems their subs were happiest when the sets and production were the cheapest.
Yeah, I agree. The quality unfortunately went down when they started Watcher :/ it feels like Quinta Brunson is doing the best out of former buzzfeed ppl. More people need to follow her example 😅

I really hate how in their apology they went "Sorry we didnt explain it better." Cause im pretty sure most people understood well enough. It was the fact they were doing it at all for any reason was the part people didnt like. And I can agree with that. Normally these guys are amazing people to watch when I get back from work and after some time I'll probably go back to watching, but for now its left a bad taste in my mouth.

I was a Watcher fan but this got so… weird and horrible. First the goodbye video felt like I was getting kicked out because I’m poor, and that feels super gross. Then the fans are attacking each other on other platforms, and this whole company/ channel and fandom was like a sinking ship that is also on fire and everyone was screaming about why it happened and I just jumped off and observing from afar. A pay wall of like $0.99 or $1.99 would have been far more effective for their fan base. Asking for $6?? My dudes, it's not gonna happen. I only pay for 1 streaming service a month and Watcher wouldn't be versatile enough to be one of them. I'm glad they're backtracking and I hope they make wise decisions for the YT channel in the future. I haven't watched them in a long time, but I've enjoyed their content in the past.
This would have been a good idea if they got other well know RUclipsrs to join in to allow different content for a good rate.
If we take what they're saying at face value, they could have dialled back on RUclips, done a 1.99 or 2.99 sub for non-advertiser friendly variety exclusively on their website. The problem is, I can't imagine what non-advertiser friendly content these guys could possibly be referring to so it's hard to believe that was the real reason.

as a bookkeeper and accountant, the biggest cost in most companies will almost always be salaries and payroll. So I am curious how much of a cut these guys get from revenue and how many employees they have and how much they are paid, do you provide insurance and retirement plans, ect? Employee's can really bloat in costs if you aren't careful. They need to layoff a decent amount of people but they feel like they cant cause it would probably screw every single one of those employees given the job market right now.
Interesting. I hear they have 25 employees. Which I find more than they need.
I'm sure they'll start looking for unpaid apprentices
I think they brought over alot of people from buzzfeed, and feel like more friends than employees. They did mention their employees salaries in the apology
@Mama_Bear524 they have like what, 4 or 5 differnt series? How is 25 employees too many?
But then they're expecting to now do international shoots.
Idk, seems like they can manage they just want a money grab to do extra that no one asked for.
I also have no doubt this site is costing a pretty penny.
I bet it's just poor money management.

"We're going to the UK. We're going to Scotland." Is someone going to tell him that Scotland is in the UK?
😂
Thanks, I came to see if anyone made this comment! 😂
Not by choice for a lot of us!
I so wanted to say this. I am a from Scotland and while we may want independence from English government, it’s still the UK as of now.
It's like when Justin Bieber said "I'd like to thank not only God but also Jesus"
Exactly! Its not “just 6 bucks” its that we have to pay that times 10 a month just to watch everything. When you isolate your one product and now make it a formal decision and commitment/separate price you are bound to lose a LOT of interest bc ppl don’t feel you make the cut anymore
With the amount of free content across multiple social media platforms, I can't imagine how they thought putting formally free content behind a paywall was a genius business move. I feel that most people would just say, "That's sucks," and just click on the next video of someone else they follow that gives the free dopamine injection. While there is a increased quantity of followers/views for increased production value, there's a whole lot of content creators that have a lot of followers, but not the absolute best production value.
People watch bec it is free. I guess they want to make a platform like netflix and have other vloggers join them. If successful then another claim to fame etc. It is not bad to dream but be real as well. People are viewing you for free then all of a sudden you'll charge, it is no brainer people will hate it.
I mean, this is the strategy ScreenJunkies did with their Screenjunkies Universe, and Collegehumor followed with Dropout. Both successfully. Screenjunkies always had a production studio with several shows they built on RUclips, and their app included live and exclusive content. CollegeHumor built longtime audiences over the years with quality sketches and used their app to create hugely successful new shows while still uploading some of that exclusive content to RUclips to entice new subscribers. As the comments section expressed, Buzzfeed Unsolved was a show that wasn't based on live events, sketches, or game shows. It was 2 funny guys talking about unsolved cases. It didn't need a huge production, and people didn't WANT that.
If Buzzfeed's content all moved over like Dropout right after the collapse, maybe that would've worked, but not JUST with Watcher
I explicitly stopped watching when their production value exceeded a certain point. I dunno man. It just didn’t feel the same anymore
As a Dropout subscriber, I love all their content and I'm happy to pay for access to it - but they produce a LOT of different types of content, so my standards for yet another subscription are pretty high! I think Watcher could be successful if they launched maybe in partnership with some other former Buzzfeed folks with big followings?
@@jfabulousalso sam reich put a LOT of his own money to keep dropout afloat- that’s part of why they had to lay off a lot of ppl a few years ago. watcher folks simply didn’t think this through.
@@JMBAD_artsadly yea even certain RUclipsrs cause their personalities felt a lot... less once quality hiked up and I get it ya gotta pay the bills but c'mon man..
Jaime nailed it about all of the plethora streaming shows we pay for just to watch 1 or 2 of our fav. Shows. The shows we watch jump around, and then we have to sub. To ANOTHER service. They all raised their rates avg. $ 2 - 4 per month. I would rather listen to 1 or 2 quick ads. Vs. Paying more money . The show Watcher was awesome - maybe get better / smarter management. Good Luck !!
They evidently had no idea how people would react, which I find absolutely gobsmacking
seriously, how removed do you have to be from not only real life, but your OWN audience??
Well it is bec they feel the charge of $6 is nothing and non issue. I believe their audience has that amt but no one wants to pay for something that one is getting for free in the first place.
@stanbalo I confess I'm old and lame and didn't know who these guys were until this vid. That being said, I was wondering how many of their subscribers already pay for RUclips premium so in a way already paid to see their videos ad free. It's like that thought didn't even cross their mind.
Right? That was the biggest thing I got from this. How much they don't understand their fans.
Jaime. Seriously, you're one of the few youtubers whose sponsored part of the video I never skipped. It's the fact that your scripts are always so full of effort that I'm always entertained by it.
IKR? 👍👍👍
I pay xtra for no ads but I LOVE your ads! 💙💙

“All I wanted” has been playing on my head throughout the day, so when you started singing my mind was blown 🤯
Former watcher of Watcher since the buzzfeeed days and I will not be resubscribing to them. Felt like a slap in the face, Jacksfilms did a parody that summed everything up, it was all about the money and they just forgot “about the poors”. The LA lifestyle and landscape comes at a cost especially when one wants desperately to rub elbows with the LA crowd, fund lavish weddings, expensive cars, expensive food and overbloated staff consisting of friends and family. Also give Jacksfilms “Leaving RUclips” a watch! Says it all!
Brand new to this whole situation but definitely am going to watch Jack’s vid after this! Thanks for the recommendation!
@@RJnottheraccoon Highly recommend Jacksfilms parody, at-least in my humble opinion, it encapsulated how it felt watching both of Watcher’s videos about leaving youtube and the update.
@@pinksparkle6891 oh I did watched it as soon as I finished this vid! It was well worth the watch!! Thanks again for the rec!
Their yearly subscription came to $100 AUD. $100 AUD a year is my entire mobile phone bill. They're not in the real world.
omfg what, my mobile phone bill is $45 NZD a month, i need to move

Mine's $100 AUD a year as well! Don't get much data, but I make it work
I don't know what this translates to in Australian money but my phone costs $100 a month 😭😭😭
Do you pay your own bill or... what? 100 aud a YEAR???
They take advantage of their fans, thinking they’ll fork over the money while their egos are blown out of proportion
Im a Watcher watcher. Have been since Buzzfeed for Ryan and Shane's shows only. If anyone looked up their first video for how they made Watcher, they literally say they left all the financial stuff up to Steven who has 0 experience in finance. 0 experience in running a business. Why would they do that?! They could have saved a lot of time, money and backlash had they hired someone qualified to run their company's finances for them. The fact that they just hired 2 more Buzzfeed people (specifically for Steven's show) and he's been bragging about his lavish lifestyle for awhile now. Steven's new show is all about jetsetting around, eating really expensive food. There are 25+ employees now. Most all are friends or family members of the guys. Honestly, most of the Watcher audience was in it solely for Ryan and Shane. That's why most of the very negative backlash hit Steven. I will say that I resubed for now. I wont be going back to Patreon for them though. Not for awhile. This just felt so much like a bad break up. They gotta earn my trust and love back. lol
You resubbed? I'm staying unsubbed. We are not the same.
No we are not. I'm not giving anymore patreon support but I want to see what happens and I want to see where they go from here. They did give an apology and I think they are obviously naive and not well managed. I'm willing to accept that they are human and made a bad mistake. I'm humble enough myself to understand that. I don't mind staying subbed for now. My choice.
@laurakirkland4157 lol u are part of the problem.
I enjoy the channel. If I can still watch the videos on RUclips without paying, then why unsubscribe?
I won't pay... But I'm not so proud to stop watching something that brings some laughs to my day...rids some of my stress .....
Let's see what happens in the future.
I’m a watcher watcher. I followed them from buzz feed. They should’ve done a pay wall
You are the third person I’ve watched regarding the Watcher guys and I’m not sick of it. I was a HUGE fan of Buzzfeed Unsolved and I’m obsessed with how dialed in RUclips is about them absolutely tanking their career.

wait what happened??
I stopped paying for RUclips premium because it didn't make sense to be still watching ads with the 'paid promotions/sponsored portion of the video'. I don't blame the creators. They gotta fund their channel, obvi! I also love love love that Jaime puts a timer on hers so we can easily skip past it if we want. I just feel like why would I pay for an ad-free experience when there's technically still ads? 🤷♀️

Haha. Yeah, I second this!
The “all I wanted was you” was so clean ❤
It was a decent apology for RUclips, but that is because the standard is seriously that low. But they really ruined the magic and I wouldn’t be surprised if they would actually have to start making cuts. Sometimes you need to make cuts in companies! They chose to cut fans rather than cut coworkers.
I agree. With running a commonly comes hard decisions and some of those hard decisions included cutting staff. It sounds like they have 25 staff. I want to know what they all do b/c as of now they are only putting out like 1-2 videos a MONTH. I can’t see more than maybe 5 people working on one video. And do Ryan and Shane not have a hand in their own videos? Or are they just online personas? I don’t even think the Try Guys have this much staff, they do work on their own video, they are lower quality and a bigger channel. They are all friends and know each other, they should have went to them for pointers. They’ve also collabed a number of times with the UK Jolly guys, a food channel. Low quality and from what I can tell just a few staff members.
I think they grew too quickly and hired too many people too quickly, then plateaued. I do wish them the best but I don’t see this going well for them as it seems a large majority of their followers won’t follow them.
The “what a weird and wonderful idea” is a reference to their show “Weird and/or Wonderful” that they believed wasn’t doing well but their fans have been asking for more episodes the entire time. So I believe that was a sneaky way of trying to get their viewers to sign up- in hopes for more episodes of W a/o W.
13:09, the monthly charge for 13,721 patreon members at $5 each is $68,605. Thats over $800,000 a year from monthly patreon memberships alone. That is also not factoring in anyone who is paying more for higher membership perks; though i don't know if Watcher offers different levels of memberships.
Don’t we have enough freaking membership/subscription fees??? I wish we would boycott all of them, really. What happened to feel content, saving money by not having cable? Now it costs more to watch streaming than cable and internet all together.
Greed is the enemy.
funny how it's "We did a bad job explaining the reasoning", not "our reasoning was sheet".
I noticed that too!
PR-coded af 😂. “Never admit full fault.”
Super telling wording 🫠
What gets me is that running a website is EXPENSIVE. How did they expect to not loose money running a streaming service that would handle, let's be nice and say, all 3 million at the same time when an episode releases?
Wow. I would have never expected this.
They are literally FLOURISHING after leaving buzzfeed.
I get how they might not have the money to support their lifestyle in LA but that just means they probably have to leave LA.

Its pure greed, plain and simple. They already have over 13,000 people who are pateron sub and they have a tier that cost 100 a month! They could have opened up membership but they want people to pay for a streaming service for them exclusively, who told them this was a good idea because they def need to be fired

Jaime, friend, that Paramore high note you hit was way more next level than any videos these dudes put out
They claim it’s so they don’t have to adjust their content for the advertisers and I would LOVE to hear specific stories because really, what adjustments are being asked of them!?
Ikr I’ve never once seen anyone complain! If anything, most of us seem to prefer their old buzzfeed unsolved content, which just so happens to be when production was at the cheapest. Wtf!
Dude. Your curls looks amazing! I know you don't dive into beauty content anymore, but I would love a hair routine video. My hair is fine and straight, and son's is a combo of loose waves and tight coils. I could definitely use some tips on how to make his curls look so defined and hydrated like yours. ❤
also the content they put out, like there is some stuff that people just do not care about or are interested in, specifically the game streaming and debrief episodes… like the fact that they think it’s youtube stopping them from doing well is a wild display of hubris
Always wondered if it was just me but yeah I like the puppet history videos and some of the true crime/mystery stuff they’ve done but the gaming and debrief content has always seemed bad to me…
When she said “it sounds like they worked at buzzfeed” she hit the nail on the head. They flew too close to the sun and got burned. I dropped them after like their 2nd move to a different channel or something. I had it with them. Glad they had a lesson slapped across their face. Hope they actually learned instead of just posting their bs apology video.
I thought they only moved once? From buzzfeed to watcher? This would have been their second move. I was fine with following with the 1st move. But fool me twice…
Yeah, this drama doesn't surprise me in the least. They really started getting arrogant when they started Watcher. Ryan really changed and it wasn't for the better. Then he started faking ghost evidence, and I was done. At this point, it's just more of the same. I mean, all they had to do was keep doing what people loved and be two goofy guys who show up at a haunted location and prank each other while finding nothing. People loved it and it came across as way more genuine. When Ryan started lying and then doubling down on it when he got called out, it was over. I do think Shane found his calling with puppets, tho. He should break off and start his own puppet channel. I'd watch that.
@@m0L3ify I haven't been following their Ghost Files episodes as much as Unsolved. Can you remember examples of when he faked evidence? That is so disappointing because I appreciated their initial approach of investigating and discussing evidence through a believer and a skeptic's point of view, and thought Ryan did a good job trying to be genuine and transparent.
I've always thought Shane was a bit lazy in his arguments though. Witness testimony isn't consistent evidence, but it is definitely evidence of something. Science offers so many explanations for paranormal activity. For example, that eerie feeling? If I remember correctly, there is a hum or soundwave that is not noticeable to human ears but does tend to elicit an uncomfortable, eerie feeling in humans and has been detected in places that are "haunted."

There are some wild but interesting theories like that people might hear, feel, or see "ghosts" but these are projections from another universe interacting with ours. I was always bummed that he never even tried to look up possible causes for what people honestly experience and basically just says people are lying or letting their imaginations go wild due to a breeze.

RAN to the comments when she did that!!! so good!!
I hope I can attempt to fill some gaps from the IT perspective (cause you mentioned wondering about firing staff, etc.) - depending on their setup, it could be a lot of people.
That UI (user interface) looks pretty slick. Without being able to dig into into the site itself, if they made it all “in house”, it could be anywhere from a team of 2-3 to a team of 15-20. They need a front end dev (to make it easy to use and pretty), a back-end dev (to deal with how to host all their streaming content) - throw in a business analyst or project manager (which they might not do, but I figure if they’re approaching their streaming site with the same level of professionalism as their video content, it’s not unreasonable), some testers, someone to manage vendors (like payment processing), at least a couple people on user data security (if they’re smart. Leaky PI is expensive), a legal advisor, yadda yadda.
Add to that they mentioned being limited by RUclips’s features, so there’s definitely some unique features they needed built for this platform.
The whole thing, to a techy geek with ZERO skin in the game (I have no clue who these guys are), it comes off like either asking your audience to fund your vanity project, or asking your audience to pay for you to get your foot in the door in the streaming game (at least investors get returns).
Also - in case anyone thinks the “two clicks - they give up” is a new phenomenon and people’s attention spans are shot, it’s been a UI design best practice for probably 15 years. If a user can’t get what they want in two clicks, you’ve lost em.
I think people don’t realize that they’re getting tv personas, we don’t know them. Everyone blames Steven but Ryan and Shane appointed Steven as CEO. They’re a team. They all wanted this. I was there when they were on buzz feed. I was excited for watcher when they left buzzfeed…..that being said I wasn’t mad…..I just knew I wasn’t going to see them again lol. They stopped puppet history and some of their content was boring to me so I was already not watching as often. They don’t post THAT often. I watched for the dumb funny conversations between Ryan and Shane. Steven…..yeah no. I unsubscribed from watcher. They lied in the apology, they just wanted more money after mismanaging their money.
Unrelated…
Jaime…..that high note gave me chills ❤😂
Yeah I was excited for them when they left Buzzfeed and started Watcher as well. I was watching from day 1. I’m not a fan of the unsolved/ghost files shows. I like Ryan and Shane’s chemistry I’m just not that interested in ghost hunting.
However I LOVED Puppet History and was sad they weren’t doing it anymore. I watched a bit of the drunk storytime stuff, but found Steven making bad drinks in there not necessary and pointless.
I agree the decision was made by all 3 and I don’t understand the hate all piled on Steven, since it wasn’t a lone decision and they all had a say in it. I think this will fail and it’s all b/c they don’t want to let go some of their staff, which makes their production costs bloated and unnecessary. Sorry, but every company has to let staff go at some point, it comes with being a boss.
I will miss them, but as they weren’t putting out much I was watching anymore anyway, can’t say I will miss them much.
I will say since Jamie doesn’t watch them, she missed the reference to Weird and Wonderful World, another great show they stopped making.
Yeah it's been really annoying seeing so many people blame it all on Steven by acting like he somehow manipulated them. I hate seeing fans of content creators baby the heck out of them by being like "these grown adults just didn't know better!". Like yes they definitely did know better, they have been in this business for a long time now lol.
They stopped puppet history?!?
@@snakesonaframe2668 yeah it sounds like they scrapped it, according to other comments. I thought it did very well and was certainly a unique show that was fun to watch. It seems that with a lot of these channels, if shows don’t get 1 mil views then they scrap them. I don’t get it b/c they are still making money off of them. 🤷♀️
@@csailer2353 that’s so disappointing
They should have collaborated with an established channel like Hulu or a cable channel like A&E so people can view their content along with other stuff.
I recently saw on Hulu the Buzzfeed unsolved series. I added it to “My Stuff”, and it’s the EXACT same as the buzzfeed channel just formatted to Hulu’s app…I would be surprised if they couldn’t work a deal out Hulu with their older successful show being leverage.
Or even got other RUclipsrs on board so they have several different content to offer
Sounds like they want an independence though and an established streaming service with likely still hold them to standards. They don't want to have to cater to advertisers they probably wouldn't want to be under an established service but I agree it would have been the smarter move and unfortunately it doesn't seem like these guys are actually business savvy
I think the issue with doing that was they would then have to share a portion of the profits with whatever platform they chose to use. Like how patreon was apparently not enough for them because patreon takes a cut. This decision was nothing but greed.
