John Newton (1725-1807) was an Anglican cleric and slavery abolitionist. The hymn was published in 1779. The amazing thing is that previously he was an investor in the slave trade and even the captain of slave ships. He meant it when he wrote about the amazing grace that "saved a wretch like me". The part with the different tune and "my chains fell off" and "unending love" was written more recently especially for a film about the life of John Newton, and has deservedly become popular.
I'm learning a few words in English from watching and translating my comments here on the channel. Congratulations to the couple and, we're together guys!
The song was written by John Newton back in the 1770's. He has quite a story which I won't go into here. He teamed up with a fellow by the name of Wiiliam Wilberforce to have a very prominent role in abolishing the slave trade at that time. The story is very touching and this song was penned around that time. Gabriel does an incredible job of bringing the passion and soul of that song as only he can. Great reaction!!!
