Despite his normal silent personality, I feel like Makoto normally does stuff to piss everyone off for the heck of it. This includes everyone showing up at Tartarus while they're still tired/sick, but he just goes in alone to grind for the night then leaves, just wasting everyone's time.
I personally take the canon personality of each MC as the one shown in the anime so for Makoto he's a depressed dude who lost the will to live but he's still nice to people (sometimes) and then he regained his will to live but at like the worst time possible. And it aligns perfectly with dialogue choices in the game so technically it can be officially canon.
