Wow. That 's what I have been dealing with. Many ladies love my skirts but when I tell them the cost they swallow hard and say how many hours does it take to make a skirt. Then when I tell them I looks for material. I wash it cut it then make a pattern of the colors and then I lay them out and then start to sow. Then I clip it and also make the ty for it and pin it for hemming . Then they don't get back with me. Lol. Time is money. China Mart has made people think everything is cheap but they want quality. Thanks for the heads up. Good to know it's just not people around here.

And even when you catch a sale for material, charge what it costs to replace the materials. Not what you paid!

Good tips. I had a retail business, now retired. I now do custom machine embroidery and sewing. I used to do craft shows, also. I have always priced according to your advice, but tried to always make it affordable. The more you do something, the more efficient and proficient you become, making the time and materials less costly.

My daughter and I used to make small baby quilts for showers. It cost us $40.00 to get the fabric and the batting. People loved them and ladies would ask us to make them for their little girl's baby dolls. When we told them what it cost us to buy the supplies, they looked at us with a blank stare. If we mentioned our time involved that would double the price of the quilt. After a few times of that, our answer became 'you have to have a baby to get one'.

    Thank you Heidi.
Yup, been there. Done that. It's really difficult as a cottage industry to shift people away from our cheaply made but less expensive mindset.
    Blessings! 💜

We had a lady in with her paper pieced queen sized quilt and another lady suggested that she sell it. The first lady asker her how much she should charge and the reply was “a few hundred dollars”. We giggled. We informed her that this particular quilt would be worth a few thousand dollars.
    Never undervalue your time.

Thank you for giving your opinion on handcrafted items. We all have to understand that it is better to buy more expensive items, locally produced and high quality. Environment and people are grateful for our shopping behaviours. To buy less, a little bit more expensive and support our own producers. No more China bad quality and exploited workers. God bless you 😊

Great job covering this topic, Heidi. I spare myself the grief and give handmade things to those who appreciate them. Many people don't realize the time involved. Plus, many can't see the quality
They can go to Walmart 😅

Since I learned from you how to make salves, tinctures, etc I've mostly been giving them away as gifts. This year I was able to grow and dehydrate most of the herbs I had been buying. I can be sure of their freshness and quality, but the cost is still there after months of caring for plants, buying a dehydrator and all the rest that goes into it. I'd already decided in the future, I will charge at least what it costs me to make things because I'm really enjoying the process. This video is timely and has confirmed this is the right choice.

When we were doing craft shows, I was given the advice- use one of 2 methods to price. The first method was hourly rate- say $15 an hour and your craft took you 2 hours to make. You would charge $30 for your product. The second method was by cost of material. You take the cost of your material, say $30 and multiply it by 3, so your product is worth $90.
We generally priced by the cost of materials x three. I know other people who just used the highest priced item similar to theirs from Etsy and used that for their price.
I think the biggest thing is to be confident in your price. If you have a quality product, don't be afraid to charge what it's worth.
    Shalom

8 skiens of yarn for an afgahn is $80 with discount synthetic yarn...and it can take weeks and months to make...and honestly people simply don't appreciate that when they can by a throw from Walmart for $14. You start getting into natural organic fibers and the added time to wrap them, change out short lengths.. and your talking about really special items and they're just not appreciated. I only make gifts of my crafts for the people I love and even some of them just don't understand the value of what they're getting. ❤ I feel this hard.

Thank you for going over this! I have struggled with pricing things correctly! I will take your thoughts into consideration, and hope that won't keep people from considering what I make. At any rate, I usually make things I'm planning to use anyway, so nothing goes to waste.

Dont forget cost of gas to go to shop, cost of electric if using an electric machine. I quit sewing for people for that reason. I still sew but when I do it's a gift.

In case someone is interested in making these, I recall many moons ago a woman made her young child a lovely, warm coat out of a pre loved all woollen blanket. Other, mothers saw it and to cut a long story short orders started coming in and profit was made 🙏🏼💕🙏🏼

Yep. I make a holiday cake people really enjoy. I made one for a coworker who asked me how much and I made just for her to have for her own family gathering. Really as a favor I just charged her the cost of ingredients only - even priced out the ingredients on paper too. My time was gifted. She was also kind and gave me a little extra for my time. So she gets it. That said, I cant really make a business of it bc it actually takes time to do- baking, cost of electricity, even time for cake to cool , some brand specifics cost more than lesser quality, etc. Id have to charge what people would scoff at paying- theyd probably think im trying to make a profit but Im not. Like $20 for a basic cake with homemade icing is pretty much at cost and actually a great deal. Then you factor in an extra container bc you dont want someone taking your bakeware home. And its not just time to do the thing, its the time taken away from other things you could be doing. For the right people, no big deal. But for others wanting your labor...nah. Anyhooo...yea..
