I had a Great Aunt give me a box of books.
She, in that moment saved my schooling.
I had the attention span of a house fly. .
But that box was full of Edgar Rice Burroughs books. Tarzan, Martian series, the earths core…. He had some western books and a mafia goon going full sci-fi.
I was tested at school 2 years later and had the reading comprehension of a college student.

Ive found so many great stories in the last few years.. i love listening to these as i go to bed.. like someones reading me a bedtime story... sometimes there so good they keep me up. Happened to me with tommyknockers lol

I saw that movie in a theater in 1976.
I think he's brilliant.
They looked forward to that moment with joy, but without haste, not pining for it, but seeming to have a foretaste of it in their hearts, of which they talked to one another. But when they looked at me with their sweet eyes full of love, when I felt that in their presence my heart, too, became as innocent and just as theirs, the feeling of the fullness of life took my breath away, and I worshipped them in silence. Their children were the children of all, for they all made up one family.
I really liked this story, even if the time paradox didn't fit as good as it should have.
One can definitely see the seeds of Barsoom in this early work of Burroughs. Thats actually the main item of interest in this, as it really has not aged well. All of the John Carter of Mars stories have everything present in this one, in greater abundance and of greater complexity and detail though I suppose its no wonder as they were published nearly thirty years apart. Amazing to think of the time this was written and the level of imagination needed for a mind of that age to conceive of such things.

....but you are forgetting that actors like Robert Deniro and Benicio DelToro are literal senior citizens currently, (Deniro is 77yrs old!!) and so possibly not the best for a role like that.

Listening to this in no way compares to watching the movie, in comparison, my favourite movie is dawn of the dead, and me reading the book is better than watching movie.

They tend to actually age pretty well and beat most of the things produced today in terms of creativity and artistic merit. Weird that you go talk about White European males from 100 years ago when the anime industry exists today that's full of harems and eroticizing kids.
Great story, but lots of racist undertones.
You do realize how long ago this was written, right? E.R.B. is echoing the predominant theories of his time, not being overtly racist. We're talking the very beginning of the 20th century. Over 100 years ago. Just enjoy the story itself as a literary work.

Why are you guys SO upset that someone happened to mention that? Yes, these stories almost always have racist undertones, yes, they are reflective of the time they were written- A time when everything had racist undertones, and totally overt ones.
Like the guy points out one thing and all of you either rush to defend the story no one was attacking, or get pissed at him for a simple and (absolutely true) observation?
Maybe take a close personal look at why such a a banal observation would get that reaction from you.
That was normal for the era though. Burroughs was actually fairly open-minded compared to many other authors and scholars of the time; yes hinting at racial theory, but also considering most, if not all races (including many of his factional ape-man species across his works) as fellow mankind deserving some standard of compassion.
Yea it is pretty racist. Coming from a racist time. Anyone who says otherwise is just a closeted racist
