  • Battle Chef Brigade is a great adaptation. It captures the feeling of Iron Chef while still feeling like its own thing. Let's talk about how Battle Chef Brigade takes a great high concept and adapts it to video games.

    This is what reviews should be more often like. Something like this really nails it at pointing out the what doesn't work, and how it could be improved. Doing so, it basically educates game makers/gamers who are watching it.

    I feel like it would be cool to split the matches into 2 separate phases. At the start they'd introduce the focus ingredient/s for the match and the contestants. Then the hunting phase starts with both contestants in the same hunting area, you wouldn't be able to attack them but ingredient drops would be available to both of you allowing you to swipe that key Dragon Steak before your opponent can despite them having killed it. Then when time's up on that phase you come back in and they introduce the judges before the cooking phase begins.

      Design Doc well, in order to git gud i would have to play it again and again, and honestly i'm done wth match 3 for quiiiiiiite some time thank you hahaha.
      But it really bothers me when games include match 3 for no reason at all or to fill in a gap in order to classify the game as a "game". If you bought Hunie Pop for example, you knew what you'd be getting into, why put a match 3 in that type of game of all things?

    • @DesignDoc

    Rather than elements, flavour profiles would have made more sense. Sweet, Bitter, Salty, Sour, Umami. Then you can throw in modifiers such as spices, temperature and scoville scale rating.

    As someone that was drawn to Battle Chef for its high concept, the simplicity of the mechanics were actually a good thing. And they don't get in the way of the experience (I think) the developers were trying to make: a run against time. I'm already a casual gamer, and one that doesn't play many platformers, and barely any match-3 games. If the gameplay was more complex (aka. harder) I wouldn't have enjoyed the game as much.

    Man, I remember way back before the kickstarter was up, and seeing the lineart animation. It was so smooth! Pity they didn't keep that style, but I can see that zooming out the camera was very needed to help with seeing your environment and enemies, and the more limited animation was probably due to the huge number of assets they needed to complete and doing them all with the smoother animation would have been incredibly expensive.

    Totally agree, while the game was rough in some sopts, it still works well and I can easily see a second game picking up where this one left off gameplay wise and just making something truly amazing

    As an avid player of the local multiplayer mode, I can happily say that playing with friends fixes many of the issues you put in this video. Instead of having two places to hunt, now both players hunt from the same grounds, and you can steal ingredients from them while they're hunting. In addition, you can set time limit or judges for each match, and we like to set it to ensure that you can't just make the optimal dish, and you're constantly pushing the time clock. The single player campaign is awesome, but the multiplayer is what truly makes this package complete.

    Imagine if they made a sequel that developed everything to a point of being able to be played as a esport.

  • @extremewirehead
    @extremewirehead 6 лет назад +1

    Couldn't have worded it better myself. Out of all the up and coming smaller titles, this one really had the ambition and creativity to steal the show. A little longer in the oven, and the sequel could very well be a show stopper.

    I was hopeful for this game, but my issues ended up being more in the lack of options overall. Like I love the idea of having to hunt and get specific ingrediants to make specific dishes, but here they're just a random combination of elements and you're going to do the same things with everything. Also i was hoping it'd be built with a player RPG esque character where you build your stats and style and develop your character as both a fighter and a chef. Like maybe you're really great at barbeque, but suck with soups, and then you're suddenly in a soup challenge and have to really try harder or use some strange strategies.

    Great review! Tbh beside the unpolished combat it feels like the match 3 cooking was kinda tucked on cause they couldn't come up with a better system. Like you quoted in the video they took a year and couldn't make anything work.
    The concept is something I've been thinking about for years and was honestly excited that someone gave it a shot but was extremely disappointed by the systems.
    As a game about cooking I feel like they should've had a solid cooking system that was fun to play with in the very beginning while this feels like the byproduct of a story/setting first game with gameplay as an afterthought

    Really good review, you did a great job analysing all the different aspects of the game. I stopped playing just after ***SPOILERS*** your character switches to Thrash, mainly due to the story suddenly rewinding and the built-up fatigue of the increasingly difficult timed battles. I really hope they make a sequel with improved elements like you suggested though, it's definitely a game that deserves one.
    Also, it's pretty cool hearing two of my favourite games, Odin Sphere and Dust, being mentioned within five seconds of each other. In my opinion, they have some of the most satisfying 2D combat around.

    • @DesignDoc
      @DesignDoc  6 лет назад

      I've played about 4 hours of Dust WAY back when it first came out and for some reason I never actually went back to it. Thought about it but just had no real urge to do it. Something just didn't quite click sadly.

  • @thattagen

    I love this game, but I do agree with your criticisms on some level. Particularly, fighting dragons late in the game is ridiculously hard. If you mess up even a little, you can lose a huge chunk of time off the clock! Thankfully, the game gives you tools to make yourself more durable and get that dragon steak in the oven!

    I wish the story was Longer or we get to know or do more. I was disappointed when I realized that once she became the top chef that was all.
    I wish there was more development or area to go to as it was repetitive to do the same stuff every day (game time)
    I wish to play the other characters, learn more about them, their back story
    How about the host and judges? How about they have mentoring classes, scrimmage, or just see them have a conversation and secretly insert some helpful hints
    At it state and age I say the game is rated 3 and a half stars. It has its good moments but nearly as much downs as goods.
    I could rant on and on but that’s my opinion.
    They have a pc and switch version. I used pc with a switch pro controller (after 3 hours of struggling and extra 2 for configs)

    Agree, loved the game, but on the end I was just "make a vegetarian dish", "use slow-cooker" or "slay the dragon", hope for the best. I think that "make vegetarian" actually was breaking my game, because it was too overpowered and too easy to use + limiting me in my exploration of ingredients, which is supposed to be main game theme. As said, still loved it.

    I rather enjoyed the game, but I do admit that I'd like to run through it as just Thrash instead of being forced to play as Mina to get to the Thrash section. Basically, make them 2 different storylines, so you don't have to play both characters if you don't want to.

    • @SatansBestBuddy1
      @SatansBestBuddy1 6 лет назад +1

      No not really. It's a "high" concept as in, looking at the whole picture. So the high concept here is the iron chef scenario where your chef needs to fight and cook to succeed. That concept feeds into how they design the world, the characters, the gameplay, and keeping them to that concept will let them blend together naturally, since it's all built around the same idea.
